パタゴニア商品の価格は総じて高めだが向こうではそれほどでもないので米国に頻繁に出張していた頃にはお店にも良く行っていた。そのイメージほどに品質が抜きん出ているわけではないので今は買わないブランドだ。
例えばこのアウター、裏地の層が経年でボロボロと崩壊して、その断片や粉末が中に着ているものをゴミだらけにしてしまう始末の悪さ。それでも冬用のトレッキング上下は今も健在です。

The pricing of Patagonia fashion is relatively expensive in general but it isn't so much in the States, so I used to visit the shop when I was frequently travelled there. When it comes to the product quality, I don't think it excels as reputed, thus it remains as one of brands I now tend to avoid. 
Take this outer jacket for example, the inner layer breaks up to compound after years of use that makes my shirt or sweater I wear dirty. Look horrible, too. My coat and pants for winter trekking still maintain their good condition though.

Coolens Sunglasses - サングラス新調

I wrote about my Nike sunglasses that had a miserable end of life a few years ago, and I had been lazy in finding an alternative since then. Now I've come across with Coolens that is quite economical: It comes with 5 lenses (!) in different colors 2 of which are polarized, and it is even convertible into a goggle-type fitting with a detachable band. Additional clip-on lens-set is for visibility adjustment (for short sighted or whatever) exactly same as the previous Nike Siege 2. I only hope this one lasts longer.

Nike Siege 2が悲惨な終焉となって数年、代わりの製品を怠惰に探すこともせずここまで来たが、Coolensの製品が良さそうなので即決即断した。Nikeの半額以下で、サングラス・レンズは色違いで5枚、うち偏光レンズは2種付属している。しかもベルトに付け替えてゴーグル型にして使うこともできる。視度調整レンズはオプションでクリップオンするのはNikeと同じだ。ラバー部は少ないので長生きしてもらいたいと期待。

Camper・Puma・Keen - サンダルの買い替え

長く愛用していたカンペールのサンダル、鼻緒の部分が切れた。直しようがないので棄てるだけなのだが、愛着からすぐに棄てきれず何とかならないかと考えたりしていた。ふとインソールの部分を取り出して見て、室内履きにしているプーマは靴底にいくつも通気穴が開いていて濡れた床は苦手なことを思い出し、はさみで少し形を整えたらそこに装着できるかもと考えて早速作業に取りかかった。履き心地はちょっとタイトになったが、そこそこ上手く収まってくれている。それとは別にサンダルの後釜をあれこれ探して、Trekkinでキーンの網靴が手頃価格なのを見つけた。これは発注後1週間強で到着だ。

Collapsing Nike Sunglasses - 5年で崩壊、ナイキのサングラス

I bought this Nike Siege 2 about 5 years. It looked cool, but its nose piece started dissolving in 2+ years and I replaced it. The picture is how it looks like today: The rubber material of the temples tore out by itself to have the core metal bars stick out. Furthermore, the tiny cracks on the inner surface layer of filter lenses develop all over which is fatal. In no way, it is a quality product! 

ナイキのSiege 2サングラスを買ったのは5年前だ。値は張ったがカッコ良いと思った。2年ちょっとして問題が出た。鼻当てのゴムが溶け始めたので、交換した。そして5年経過した今の状態がこの写真。テンプル部の表面ゴムが裂けて、中の金属棒が露出、そしてフィルターレンズは表面層にヒビがどんどん進行していて、これは致命的だ。お粗末だった！

Scarpa vs Salomon - トレッキングシューズ物色中

膝の怪我は内側靱帯を伸ばした軽傷の部類で、普通に戻るには2ヶ月くらい必要とのこと。膝周りの筋力強化を含むトレーニングは早くても4月からになりそう。20km強の距離を7日間歩き続ける準備に肝心の靴について、これまで履いていたScarpaはソールがすり減ってきたし、小指のあたりが狭くて血豆の原因でもあったので、早めに新しい靴を探すことにした。自転車に乗ることも考え軽くて、但し歩く時はしっかりグリップできる靴。そんなうまい話があるだろうか？僕は踝にかかるミッドカットの靴が好きなのだが、たまたまネットでセールになっていたSalomon Viaggio GTXという靴をあまり熟考もせず見た眼で衝動買いした。重さは405g x2とScarpaよりは20%軽い。Salomonは細いとの世評通り幅は2Eで、Scarpaより細身に見える。ただ形状は小指の横から先端にかけて急に細くなるScarpaに対し、Salomonはカーブがやや緩くもっと手前が細くなっている感じだ。靴の後部分は踝への立ち上がりがもっと垂直に近い。これが足に慣れるかどうか履いてみて、ダメならワイド+ローカットで探すつもり。

My injury was the stretched ligament inside of the knee, relatively light damage, but it will take 2-3 months to get back to normal. Trainings focusing the muscles around the knee may be started from April earliest. Despite the situation, I had been look for a pair of shoes in preparation for continued 7-day walks of over 20km per day because the outer soles of my Scarpa’s are worn out and its narrow foot shape causes to ache little fingers. Something light enough for bike riding yet solid enough for long walking hopefully! As I love mid-cut designs, I bought Salomon Viaggio GTX instantly upon seeing it on the net without much thought. It weighs 2 x405g, 20% less than Scarpa. As many users commented, its shape was narrow and indeed specified as 2E, but the outer curve looks gentler than Scarpa which bends quickly from little finger side toward the toe, therefore in case of Salomon the narrow pressure stays closer to the pad than the fingers. The back of Salomon is more upright than Scarpa, and I will see how the new one fits me. If not, I will probably go for a low-cut, wide pair instead.

Puma Yutaka Lite Camo – ユタカliteカモ

脱いだり履いたりが楽そうなので、ルームシューズにと考えて購入。すごく軽くてフィット感も良い。靴底は柔らかい。上面も靴底も穴が開けられているのでビーチサンダルの発展型シューズという発想だと思う。冬場の保温性は期待できないので、3シーズン用かな。

I thought this pair might be ideal for in-room shoes with easy putting on/off. I think I made a good choice as they are very light and fit quite well. The sole is very soft. They may be conceptually a step up from summer beach sandals with holes not only on the top but also in the soles. They may not be so warm during the winter.

SOU・SOUの地下足袋 - Les jikatabis

プーマのルームキャットが廃番となって断念していたルームシューズだが、ようやく打って付けの代替品が見つかった。 ご覧の地下足袋だ。地下足袋がファッションとして売れているという話はちょっと前から耳にしていたが、その元祖京都のSOU SOUで手頃なセール品となっていたのがこれ。地下足袋ながらスリップオンだし、白いズック地も合う季節になったし、親指が抑えになる足袋の感覚が何とも懐かしい。足に馴染むのも早い。


L’idée des chaussures d’intérieures était disparue puisque Puma avait discontinué le Room Cat, mais j’ai trouvé récemment une alternative très agréable. Voilà; ce sont des “Jikatabis” japonais. (Les Tabis sont des chaussettes en toile, et leur dérivation d’extérieure avec une semelle est le Jikatabi pour les travailleurs.) Sou Sou à Kyoto a créé des nouveaux modèles sur les Jikatabis en couleurs, et les transformés en une vogue. Mon jikatabi est sans les ongles, comme le mocassin, et le coutil blanc est idéal pour le printemps. Avec les Tabis, le gros orteil est séparé qui efficacement saisit le sens de la terre. Il se fait aux pieds aussi.

PUMA Room Cat – プーマのルームシューズ

去年の夏過ぎ頃に買ったルームキャットはとても履き心地が良くて、カミさんや両親にも買ったくらいだったのだが、1年強でついに履き潰してしまった。買い直そうとしたらどこにも商品がない。ルームシューズそのものが他に魅力的なものも見当たらないし、代わりになりそうな製品を物色してみて同じプーマのネオロウという商品に辿り着いたがこれもサイズがない。最近は企画数量が満了したら追加生産もなく、息の長い商品というのは少なくなるばかりのようだ。




I came across with these room shoes early fall last year, and this Puma Room Cat was so good that I bought some more for my wife and her parents. In a little over a year, mine was worn out, and I automatically tried to get another pair, but they were sold out completely in any shop. Being unable to find altertatives that looked equally appealing, I finally arrived at a product called Neo Low aqua socks by the same Puma. Unfortunately, they ran out with my size. The products today have projected quantity for their production and once it has been met, that’s the end of the product, and thus everything tends to have a short life these days.

入院ファッション – Mode in Hospitals

「手術入院するなら前開きのパジャマが要るんじゃない」とカミさんに言われたが、長らく僕はパジャマを使っていない。第一にあんな画一的な柄とデザインしかない悪趣味な着物に埋没することが全く理解できない。それに上海の朝の街を歩くおじさんみたいなパジャマ姿は自尊心が許さない。
「作務衣ならまあ良いか」とネットショップを眺めてはみたものの、配送が間に合わない可能性も高いので結局普段の格好で臨むことにした。
持ち込んだのは古い麻の藍染め作務衣パンツ、VネックTシャツ（Cerutti他）、前開きではないが脱ぎやすいPatagoniaのセーター、足元はCamperのサンダルと5本指ソックス。
病院では術後の眼の保護にゴーグル型メガネを使い退院後も推奨していたが、装着感がイマイチだったので、僕は愛用のサングラスで済ませることにした。もうひとつ欠かせないのが、4人部屋で隣のいびきに耐えて安眠するための耳栓だ。以上が写真に並べた僕の病院ファッションだった。


“Tu n’as pas de pyjamas s’ouvrant devant pour l’hospitalisation, n’est-ce pas?” disait ma femme. Depuis longtemps je ne mets jamais de pyjamas. Premièrement, je n’aime guère leur monotonie du style toujours avec des motifs identiques et banals : c’est absolument un mauvais goût. Deuxièmement, les gens en pyjama que j’ai vus dans les rues de Shanghai le matin étaient une torture pour mon sens esthétique.
“Peut-être ça ira avec un samoué, tenue de travail traditionnelle japonaise” pensais-je. J’en ai recherché sur Internet, mais je n’en ai pu trouver aucun qui puisse être livré avant mon hospitalisation. Par conséquent, mon accoutrement était comme le montre la photo : un pantalon de vieux samoué en chanvre, des T-shirts à col V, un pull Patagonia qui se déshabille facilement, des chaussettes avec cinq doigts, et des sandales Camper.
L’hôpital m’a offert des lunettes de protection après l’opération, mais elles s’ajustent mal, j’ai donc mis mes lunettes de soleil préférées.
Vous ne devez pas oublier des boules-quiès : votre voisin de lit pourrait troubler votre sommeil par son renflement...

Chagall and Magic Flute – シャガールの魔笛

日曜日に東京藝大美術館にシャガール展を見に行った。翌日が最終日という大詰めで、しかも三連休の真っ直中という状況から予測はしていたが、会場は超満員の盛況、絵を見る観客の列が毎分30センチくらい前進するという忍耐が問われる鑑賞となった。
この美術展のハイライトはモーツァルトの歌劇「魔笛」なので、僕としては腰を据えておもむろにひとつひとつの絵を賞味するのになんの苦痛もなかった。シャガールがパリのオペラ・ガルニエに天井伽藍画を描いたのは1964年で、今回の「魔笛」はその直後にニューヨーク・メトロポリタン歌劇場に依頼されてシャガールが舞台デザインに着手したものだ。シャガールは舞台のみならず、衣装やあらゆる細部にまで綿密に構想を練っていたようで、パパゲーノの衣装などまさに意を得たりという感じだ。かくも色彩的でファンタジックな魔笛なら、50周年の2017年あたりに復刻上演してくれないかなあ・・・


On Sunday, I went to the Museum of Tokyo University of Arts to see the exhibition of Chagall. Because it was one day before closing and also in the middle of 3-day holidays, I had expected it, but the venue was completed packed and the line of people to watch the display lazily moved only one foot per minute or so, which demanded us a patience.
The highlight of this exhibition was Mozart’s “Magic Flute” that Chagall designed the entire stage for Metropolitan Opera in New York right after he drew the ceiling picture of Opéra Garnier in Paris in 1964. Watching these dessins slowly one by one was opposite from any pains for me. Chagall not only designed the stage but also the costumes and the likes with great care in details. Papageno’s costume is a good example of perfection. My best wish is the reproduction of this performance with abundant colors and fantasy in 50th anniversary in New York that comes in 2017.

Nike Siege 2

新しいサングラスを買った。ナイキのSiege 2というモデルで、スポーツタイプながら内側に視度補正のレンズを装着できる、最近いくつか見られるようになった種類の製品だ。デザインと装着性が決め手だったが、実際に使ってみて驚いたのが視界の良さだった。空の青さも緑の鮮やかさもハッとするくらいで、こんな感覚は初めて、ハイキングが楽しくなるサングラスだった。ガヴァルニーでとても重宝した。
レンズフィルターはGolf/Speed/Polarizedなど目的に応じたTint系5種類があって、僕の買った製品にはSpeedレンズが付いていた。さらにもうひとつ標準的なGreyフィルターが付いてくるのだが、このフィルターを通して見る色の自然さが素晴らしかった。因みにSpeedはやや茶色味を帯びる。
ナイキのサイトにTintフィルターの効果をシミュレーションしてみせるページがあった。正確さはともかく参考に。


I bought a new sunglass. It is Nike Siege 2, an athletes' model that is getting popular recently enabling to integrate sight-adjustment lenses behind the filters. I like the design as well as the fitting comfort, but what really surprised me was its great visibility. The blue of the sky and the green of the trees were breathtaking, and it was a powerful tool to make your hiking more pleasant with a new sensation. That was how I enjoyed my recent walk in Gavarnie.
There are 5 different options for tint filters (check the following link for simulations: http://www.nikevision.com/lens-simulator), and mine came with “Speed”. Also attached was normal Grey filter the colors through which were truly natural. Speed had a slightly brownish view.

パリのバーゲン - Soldes

パリは先週24日からバーゲンシーズンに突入、僕らはサンジェルマン・デプレにいたが、この週末はどこもすごい人出だった。ブランドものは30%OFFくらい、僕もCAMPERで靴を100ユーロで買った。写真はZARAの店内。


In Paris, Soldes started around 24th last week, and the weekend was full of people everywhere. Typically the price was 30% off at popular brand boutiques, and I myself bought a pair of CAMPER shoes for 100 Euros. The picture is at Zara.

Small Organizer - システム手帳選び

長年使ってきたKNOXBRAINの手帳がくたびれてきたし、もうバイブルサイズにぎっしり情報を書き込むわけでもないので、小型のものに替えようと思い立った。実は6-7年前にもミニ6穴に移行した時期が2年間ある。まずフランクリン・コーヴィーに遭遇、リフィルの中身は濃いが手帳のサイズで今ひとつ決心できず、パソコン版のトライアルを使ってみた。これは電子データの利便性が強み。但しPDAからは撤退しており、市場はパソコンのみへの「集中と選択」。iPhoneかiTouchにこれがあればきっと使うと思った。次にオークションでモンブランの6穴ミニを見つけたが2万を超えるので二の足を踏む。E-BayにはCoachの出品があって$50位で落とせたがこれも流した。最終的に食指が動いたのは池袋のLoftにて、アシュフォードの革製モデル。ちょうど二つ折りの財布のように大きなポケットが付いていて、多目的に役立ちそうなのが合格の理由だ。

My KNOXBRAIN organizer has got tired for years of use, and as I am no longer writing down plenty of information in it, I decided to switch to a smaller one. First of all in my search, I encountered with Franklin Covey. The line-up of refills was excellent but the size was a little too large, so I played with its PC trial version for a while. Electronic data was a definite advantage, but its business seemed shrinking with PC version only and none for PDA’s. I would go for it if it were for iPhones or iTouch. In auctions, I saw Montblanc and Coach organizers, over $200 and $50 respectively, but I passed them. The one I finally chose was Ashford, classic in Japan, with a large, versatile pocket just like a wallet.

Oakley - My new glasses

フィジカル・ネタが続きます。Oakleyのメガネ、魅力あるデザインです。僕は強度の近視で、パソコンで仕事をするようになって久しいわけですが、その間に度はさらに進み続けています。昨年の秋にも仕方なくメガネを作り替えることにしました。いつものように眼鏡屋さんに行ったところ、今回はちょっと度数の進行が著しいので、眼科で見てもらってくださいと、追い返されてしまいました。
幸い近所の眼科クリニックは若くて美人の先生がやっているので、通院で気が滅入るということはありません。意気揚々という感じです。患者というのは現金なものというのが世間相場です。検査の結果、眼球そのものはフィジカルに問題はなく、ただ左目についてはレンズの度を上げても比例的には視度が上がらず、適当なところで抑える妥協となりました。
僕はコンタクトレンズはしません。しない主義です。と言うほど偉そうな思想を掲げているのではなく、あんな異物を眼の中に入れるということに対して単に生理的にびびっているのでしょう。何十年も。そのくせ、レンズはガラスレンズ限定とはっきりしています。だってプラスチックレンズ使うのはバカチョン・カメラぐらいだろう、ちゃんとしたやつは全部ガラスだよ。できればContaxだよぉ。
事実、高屈折レンズになると、僕の場合周辺での色収差が大きく、例えば長い蛍光灯に並んで両側に青と黄色のバーが走ったりします。だから必然的に古風な分厚い「牛乳瓶の底」を選ぶことになるわけです。勢いメガネフレームは極力小型の製品にしてレンズの厚みと重さを回避します。
とにかく、今回は処方箋も書いてもらったし、奮発してOakleyにしました。今まではIM Productsでした。最近のフレームデザインはどうしても横長主流で、ジョン・レノン風のヤツだと顔が締まらないし、僕のような条件設定の人間にはきつい状況です。Oakleyはモダンなスタイルながらレンズ面積が意外に小さく、気に入りました。度の調整で視度は1.0くらいまで上がりましたが、斜め方向の見え方が左と右で微妙に整合しないので、残念ながらこのメガネも僕の永遠の伴侶とはならない予感がします。
