Origami Mask -

I showed a pattern paper for home-made mask last time, but I did not make one myself. Now, I am deeply  indulged in making masks. I just happened to encounter with a video in the net which looked so simple, so I tried it. The finished shape was unexpectedly beautiful and I guess I was enchanted. This "Origami Mask" is  created by professor Anna Myczkowska-Szczerska who works in the Industrial Forms Department at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts in the city of Krakow, Poland.

The sealing effect from the nose to the profile is excellent and the only the chin area would be the loose section. Since it provides some space inside the mask in front, the breathing is least resistive. The front area secures 3 layers while the sides toward ears consist of 2 layers but the folding results in 4 layers, and it does not look inferior to generally available products in the market. It is amazing design ability to create such a class of functionality from a sheet of kitchen paper!

In my case, I prepared a sheet in 42 x 24cm size with nonfabricated material to make the mask more dependable. You can find the right size to fit for yourself. Follow the procedures in the attached link below:

Hazardous Blood Pressure and etc

Something was wrong with the left half of my body because I did not sense the hotness on the skin in the bath tub. I thought it must be with regard to the brain, and luckily I was introduced to a renowned brain doctor through a close friend of mine to have an MRI examination: It was cerebral hemorrhage!
As I recall it a couple of weeks or so ago in the kitchen, I felt funny when the hot water from the tap wasn't hot on my left hand but instead a bit aching unlike my right hand. It must have started then.

All I could do was taking the prescribe pills; the lightest one for the first month the effect of which did not look sufficient, thus another step-up pills for the second month. The blood pressure level around 160 went down to the order of 130's that is considered as a safe range so far. I should say it is a "miraculous" cerebral hemorrhage because the symptom only remained in the numbness of left foot fingers and loss of sensing hotness.

My friends invited me to a drive for change of air and encouragement in early April at which time I wanted to see how the whole thing went in my body in a calmer condition and my family just did not allow me to be too active either, but now the season got better in the mountains as well as my conditions (at least stable), so we decided to take a ride on a new Citroën that my friend recently bought.

Mountain views were all around from Mt. Fuji, Southern Alps of Japan, to Yatsugatake Peaks. A few unknown spots such as "Suisha-no-Sato" (Water wheel village) park and "Kaiganji" temple were definite worth of visits. Exhibits of "Jomon-era" (BC10000) in Archeology Museum in Hokuto City were very impressive, and the stay at Seisenryo (X: St. Andrew's lodging) was such a comfort with great meals, an absolute recommendation!

iPhoneでヘルスケア - Health Care Monitoring with iPhone

Scarpa -

When I climbed Nishi-Hodaka the other day, I felt one of my fingers hurt, but it did not show up on the surface when I saw it back at home. A few days later, the third finger turned black with the blood spread behind the nail. This same problem was the second time in the climbings, and I thought it was clear the shoes did not fit my feet.
I bought Scarpa because a reliable friend of mine recommended it. I chose the model which looked suited for maybe the trekking, and it served very well in the usual walks. When it comes to long climbing, its Vibram sole was too soft and a bit slippery. The shape seemed narrow for typical Japanese and my third and little fingers were pressured from the side while the size itself was right. I took the pictures of the shoe and the foot and layered them as shown, only to confirm the cause of the problem. I should probably choose a wider pair from Japanese or German brands.

1 Year after Cataract Operation

I felt my right eye was losing the focus last fall after more than a year since I had had cataract operation. I revisited the hospital as the new year started and the doctor explained it as posterior lens capsule opacification that could be addressed by a laser treatment fairly easily. This occurs to almost everyone after cataract operation although the degradation of visivility varies.

I received the laser treatment of making tiny holes in the capsule this week, and the first change I recognized first afterward was the iPhone’s menu screen that was much clearer and beautiful without having no upgrading, and I was trying to find out for a while why the software could improve the graphical quality! Roughly in the range from 40cm to 3m, the focusing as well as the contrast got perfect in my right eye, now no need for glasses to read newspapers, which was even greater surprise than the visibility I got after the first operation. Once I have achieved a new reference, I now realize that the same “cloudy” problem resides in my left eye, less in its amount though. When it comes to distant visibility, the left eye occasionally remains better because I see double-images in my right eye, but the glasses completely correct it while the focusing in the left eye does not reach that far.

Run for Dokudami Tea –

Dokudami herbal tea having run out, I decided to visit the seller in Hayama by bicycle. It is a tea house named “Hinodeen” and as I thought it was too close going there straightforward, I coupled it with my usual exercise run to Shonan Village, but attacking from the opposite side (Akiya beach) then follow Route 217 going downhill and then into Nango tunnel.
I hate running in tunnels and this particular tunnel on Miura Pennisula Central Road was exceptionally long exceeding 2km, so I was a bit worried. Consequently, there was a wide sidewalk along with the guard rail, therefore it was quite safe. I met no one walking or on bike in the tunnel. Turning to the left at the end of the tunnel and I had to climb a rather tough hill from Kawakubo and the tea house was just before the hilltop. I made approximately 18km in 65 minutes. Going back home from there is about 5km starting with a down-hill run.

I don't feel great these days...

While my body condition with a slight fever and coughing remained unimproved after the last 70km long run, the chorus training this morning was some “exercise” because the conductor proceeded with the real tempo for the concert which was fast, and there were only two tenors and the only partner of mine tended to rely on me to sing. So my fever went up a little in the afternoon.
I felt my body much relaxed as I had been to Hoya yesterday to have the body massage. I have been receiving the treatment occasionally for about a year by the masseuse who opened a facility in the residence, and it is a kind of relief to have someone who stores my physical situation in memory just like a trainer for athletes. This time, I was a bit surprises to find that the femurs and the buttocks still had the mussle fatigue caused by the long run. Additionally, the right joint of the waist was stiff. This indicated a few things to do before and after the running: One is a series of stretching for cool-down and another is balancing the amount to accumulate in the trainings for the targeted long run.

Pneumonia -

Having kept coughing for a week or so, the chorus exercise on Saturday was not comfortable and the fever rose up in the evening. I went to the hospital first in this week and the result was pneumonia again. Though it was in the opposite lung this time, the doctor said it was unusual to have pneumonia so repeatedly in the age of 60’s questioning my work load and alimentation status. I am receiving the treatment of intravenous drip injection of antibiotics and nutrition liquid for 3 days.

Sonicare -

We use Sonicare toothbrush for more than a decade at home. The very first we bought was Braun because Sonicare was rather expensive, but one day in San Francisco, I came across with its sale at Macy’s, and when I brought it back home, the effect of brushing was totally amazing, and we continue to stick with Sonicare ever since.
Earlier this week I was in Akihabara to find at Yodobashi Camera a good deal of Sonicare’s elementary model HX6511. I had to buy replacement brushes for the older model that was two times more expensive and I could buy a new model for 3 brushes. So I got this, and at home, it had to be charged. It was not fully charged a day later, which was a bit strange, and I used it once in between, but following the instructions I plugged the mains out to avoid excessive charging. Then a few hours later, the product stopped responding to the touches on the switch and in addition on the charger it continued beeping for hours. I had to bring it back to Yodobashi because its behavior seemed totally erroneous.
Out of the bag at Yodobashi, this product behaved cool with no problem, Damm it! The staff was very cooperative and he checked my explanation with the manufacturer who said never encountered with such a case... Still the staff said to me it would be better to replace the product in this situation. The replacement operated out of the box as it was pre-charged, which was a different behavior. While filling the documentation, the troubled product was sitting on the desk and suddenly it started operating by itself, and the staff was surprised to see it, telling me something was wrong with it!
Sonicare’s new version, when it came out a few years ago, had many malfunction troubles due to a component failure but it is stable now according to him.

Turn Over a New Page -

A Happy New Year!
Last year, I had lots of active events and all went well through the midnight of Christmas Eve until one exception that followed immediately afterward: I woke up with a very high fever on 25th, and I was told on Monday that I had pneumonia. The fever dropped to normal on 29th, thanks to antibiotic medicine, but I sense the subtle inflammation in the right lung still remains. The chorus exercise starts coming weekend, and I am by no means ready to breathe in full yet. A moment of ordeal…
I hope to filter the activities this year with more focuses, and in parallel the frequency of my blog uploads might be affected steering toward more selective topics. In any case, I look forward to your continued supports.

Xootr MG -

The topic of ultra lightweight bicycles continues. I bought Xootr MG in Canada. The price was about $230 over there, and it was promptly deliverable to my friend’s home, so I made up my mind to hand-carry it. I calculated the addition of $40 for the fender and the shipping, but forgot rather high Canadian consumption tax. The total cost was still about $310. It was not so bulky or heavy although the carton box looked very tired when arrived. Actually, the size of Xootr is large when I practically ride on it. I guess it may be interesting to go out for a trip carrying it. Its tires are hard and solid that causes the cruising not so comfortable when compared to bicycles, but the sliding speed with the kicks is fabulous. A front brake is integrated but the mechanism is to pressure the bottom of the tire with somewhat uneven feeling, therefore I am not sure how dependable on a steep slope.

My Cataract Operation, Act 5

When I went to the hospital for 1-month post-operation checks the other day, I forgot to ask about the certificate I had requested for the purpose of insurance refund. It was actually ready, and I went out today again to pick it up.
At the cashier counter, I was told the fee was $125. I immediately claimed that I thought I saw $35 in the list of fees for various certificates to which the clerk explained me it was for the certificate prepared in the hospital’s own form but in other forms the price was as charged. I would consider it normal if the fee was around $50-60, but if the digit shifts up, It sounds rather pricey for average people, and I felt strongly the life here depended much on how much money in the pocket.
By the way, I discovered that the operation fee using multi-focus lenses covering short and long sights is about $3300, roughly two times of standard single-focus lenses. When I was speaking with the doctor, I found a sheet of tariff on his desk, and I could precisely read the numbers. My visibility was indeed improved!

Ultra-light bicycles –

Expanding my bright idea I had during the dark trekking the other day, I investigated if bicycles of 5 kg (11 lbs.) really existed. A product that looked decent was Panasonic Traincle 6000 weighing 6.9 kg with full titanium frame and 14” wheels, but it cost sky-high $4,000! Slightly more affordable was YS-11 Limited for about $1,100 and 7.3kg. Weighing 8.5kg and for only $370 was Renault AL-14FDB that seemed the one to choose under the normal condition. Actually the lightest I found was called A-bike that weighed 5.5kg, but the wheels were too tiny and it did not look so comfortable to ride, and I thought a kick scooter would be even better: Xootr MG for example with only 4.5kg well within the target. Unfortunately, the price in Japan is over $500.

The right things -

I resumed the chorus exercise in the weekend, and confirmed that I could see the conductor while tracing the score in hand without the help of glasses. In parallel, I started reading books, too. I had borrowed 2 books from the library and need to accelerate reading them before the deadline.

Notably wonderful was “The Promise with Afghan – People Are Sufficient to Love and the Sincerity is Sufficient to Believe”. It is the book released this spring by Hisae Sawachi interviewing Dr. Tetsu Nakamura who devoted more than 25 years in providing medical services in the areas with no doctors in Afghanistan and even digging wells taciturnly for the people to survive. I speak out he is the real example who thinks and acts on the right discipline. The media and the regime in general do not perform so in contrast to him.

Another book I read for fun is “Ich bin dann mal weg” by Hape Kerkeling as one of my friends recommended it. A German comedian sets to the pilgrimage from St. Jean Pied de Paul to Compostela after recovering from his serious surgery, and he talkatively writes about the journey of his own style.
One interesting metaphor in the book to remark below:
The God is like an excellent movie that achieved number of awards, and the churches and their system are merely like the cinemas, or more precisely those aged in countries. I wish someday we could see its original unabridged version with the superb quality of the vision and the sound in 3D.

My Cataract Operation, Act 4

I had the doctor’s check one week after the operation today. He said that my eyes still had a slight inflammation but all looked quite good after all, therefore the lighter set of eye lotion-medicines was arranged.
It is said that the new glasses should be made after the eye condition has been fully stable in 2 to 3 months, but as I need glasses focusing the far distance, I plan to go to the shop tomorrow to replace the lenses as an interim solution.

Mode in Hospitals

My Cataract Operation, Act 3

I came back from the hospitalization and the result of the operation was a steady step forward. The images of tripple-offset characters disappeared and the displays of the stations and the others are all readable. My visibility is now around 0.4 with the bare eyes.

The hospitalization starts at noon until 10 a.m. of the third day, and there are a couple of orientations, the lesson of administering eye drops, an intravenous drip injection twice after the operation, the scheduled eye drops every 2 to 3 hours, and the medical examination by doctors each day, therefore it is the operational process with full attention as a system with many medical staff involved. Considering that the cataract operation is mostly for the aged patients, it may be said that the system of hospitalization is logical.

The meals are small in volume but very well considered, and 4 different dishes and 150 grams of steamed rice were quite good. The supper is 470kcal while the lunch is 620kcal indicating that the balance is made lighter in the evening.

As for the operation itself, the main theme here, I was in the first group to be guided to the operation room at 9 in the morning where I saw 4 or 5 chairs like those we see at dentists. The operation started with my left eye and everything was smooth. I was curious which eye to start and relieved as they chose my left eye that was worse of the two. Some other patients had their right eye operated, and it seemed there was some rule of choosing the order. After the left eye was done unfortunately, there was a rearrangement of patients’ orders somehow, and I was sent back to my bedroom to wait until called again. They did not explain why. It was almost the last group I suppose when I returned to the operation room and a young, female doctor was on my right eye this time. It was tougher because I felt subtly dim pain or stress while she removed my chrystalline lens as I assumed if the anesthesia was not sufficient. Some kind of tension remained in the eye after the operation and the tear did not cease dripping. The first doctor spoke up to me explaining the process during the operation to maintain the communication that gave me some understanding and relief, while the female doctor simply proceded the operation efficiently without a word. When she stack a needle or something in my lens, I heard she muttered “this is rather hard”.
The operation was over with no other troubles before the noon, and I was told every thing was fine in the afternoon examination. The right eye’s uneasiness was calmed down when I took the pill to reduce the eye pressure, I felt nothing obtrusive the following morning.

The present focal distance is about 50cm and the doctor said it would settle down with somewhat shorter distance, though I tend to appreciate the current status. For me to precisely recognize the things in far distance, I still need short-sighted glasses, but I can see things around me well and I think I can have my routine life without them. I now see the wrinkles in my face very clearly! For reading books with small characters, bringing the object even close loses the focus unlike the old days, and the magnification is needed.

Few things are new to me after this change:
a. The size of books and things in hand is totally different. A4 size scorebook looks like almost B4 size. Also, the distance to my feet seems shorter. This is the real, life size probably.
b. I occasionally see flickering but no idea why.
c. Perhaps because of better transparency of silicon lenses, the light looks brighter. I tend to use my sunglasses also for the protection.

My Cataract Operation, Act 2

I had the medical checks prior to the operation this week. Lots of shots in my eyes were taken, and occasionally I was told not to blink for 3 seconds but it was difficult.
My electrocardiogram taken the other day came out with a suspicion of Burgada syndrome, which I have never heard of, and was asked if I ever had sudden faints or if my relatives had one. My parents had economical problems but not their hearts.
The arrangement for today was to take X-ray pictures first, and then see the physician at the circulatory organ department for the professional opinion. The doctor told me that Burgada’s approach was purely statistical and the syndrome consisted of two unique factors combined: reversal peaks and suddlebacks called ST right after the pulses. Because my waveform showed only one of the factors, it can be generally judged unlikely.
I got back to the ophthalmology department with this result, and my operation was confirmed as scheduled. It requires 2 nights’ hospitalization from the 13th, and it may look overdoing for a cataract operation that requires some half an hour in the contemporary environment, but I appreciate this classic approach with full attention.
The expenses associated with the operation/hospitalization will be roughly $1700, and the price list for superior bedrooms was among the information given which is interesting. There are a few gorgeous rooms even with sofa, kitchenette, and bath or shower.

NHK’s “Doctor G” is an exceptionally distinguished program in the recent television. The patient’s symptoms are presented to 4 young doctors who begin their logical approach to define the name of the illness, and the experienced Doctor G who posed this question assists and discusses with them to arrive at the final decision.
Because the medical treatment gets more and more specialized while the shortage of doctors continues to be serious, the accessibility to general doctors is even more vital today. The concept of general doctor might be a practical remedy to the problem providing us the opportunity to consider the fundamental aspect of what the doctor offers to patients although we cannot exaggerate only the good side of it.
I recall in my company, we used to discuss whether we should focus on the specialists or the generalists.
Unfortunately, the program ends by September. This kind of programs is good evidence of how the media could serve to function with responsibility to the pubic, and I hope it comes back with some more enhancements.

Dehumidifier -
