Karasawa

The weather continued to be fair on the second day, and we started the trek crossing Yokoo Bridge at 7:30 heading for Karasawa. In about an hour of walk on the trail where no group tourists invade, we arrived at a suspension bridge. From here up, the trail is entirely in the snow, and we put our crampons and spats to let our feet manage the snow. I brought cheap crampons with only 4 claws as that was all I had, but it appeared to me useless in the most part. My partner with experience stated that good crampons could serve you 50 years thus the investment for the safety was actually trivial. His is Grivel and has served him only 30 years so far.

Karasawa’s altitude is 2300m and the elevation from Yokoo is about 800m. In this time of the year, the path in the snow is clear as many climbers have stepped the route, and particularly in such a beautiful day, the walk to ascend is stressless and pleasant as one can enjoy the gorgeous views of the mountains.

We arrived at Kawasawa Hütte in about 3 hours, and the staff of the lodge looked surprised to receive us so early because normally the people get hear in the late afternoon as they walk from Kamikouchi throughout. Our plan for this trip was to allow sufficient margin for the walk and enjoy the views more.
After an early lunch, we had a stroll (evidently a snow walk) to neighboring Karasawa Sanso [mountain lodge] and relaxed there for a while over a coffee. When we got back to our Hütte, we saw a couple of climbers were putting their skis on, and headed to the summit. In the direction they were heading, we recognized several Spurs on the slope and understood that this was a wonderful stage for back country skiing. The speed of the ski climbers was very fast leaving another climber without ski far behind. Will they really go straight up to the ridge with their skis on? We were very curious to see the progress. The robust skier went up to the ridge in 2 hours and waited for the other to arrive there late by 30 minutes. Despite our hope to see their downhill ski, they walked further on the ridge to the left and disappeared. We don’t know how long it took for the climber without ski as we stopped watching further, but it probably took more than 3 hours.

It is rumored that the dinner in Karasawa Hütte is often better than restaurants in town, and indeed it was something not likely in mountains. We made the bed at 8 p.m. and I actually fell in the sleep at 9, although I woke up at midnight, then I heard the noise of the rain drops on the roof, which turned into something like a hail around 2. There was a shaking with rather fine vibrations at 3 that made me wonder an earthquake at this hight? These busy stuff prevented me from sleeping and some people woke up as early as 4:30 in the large room to sleep with no privacy.

We started descending at 7 on the third day and got to the suspension bridge at 8:30, which was quite unexpectedly efficient. On my part, I slipped several times with the crampons that failed to function, but the right knee with my concern did not make a single cry of agony. I think it was because the snow enabled me to walk all the way with my own strides luckily.
The remaining part to Kamikouchi was long but less stressful, and we finished the walk before noon. Deuter Spectro was wet inside partly as it tended to rain, and it reminded me the need for a pack cover. My experienced partner immediately suggested me a Sea to Summit. The rain cleared up while we were on our lunch box under the eaves of Visitor Center building, and we had a touristic walk to the monument of Sir Winston and Imperial Hotel before the bus of 2 p.m.
I definitely conclude that it was a quite contented weekday trip.

Kamikouchi

I went to Kamikouchi for two-nights’ trip as now is the season for young green leaves and mountain snow. The express train Super Azusa leaves Shinjuku at 8:00 for Matsumoto where you transfer to Alpico Rail for Shinshimashima, and then take Alpico bus, and you will be at Kamikouchi Bus Terminal in 4.5 hours.
On Kappa Bridge, the magnificent view of mountains with snow from Hodaka to Yakedake is all around us. We walked some 8km to Yokoo Mountain Lodge for the first day which was a least demanding hiking course with little elevation. Each room in the lodge is fitted with 4 of 2-story beds to allow maximum 8 people, a typical arrangement in mountains. Unexpected surprise was the bubble-jet bath tub to heal your body comfortably from fatigues.

A topic of bicycle pedals. SPD is the locking system that bites the metal piece attached on the specific shoe sole. Now I have installed it in my bicycle after all the years with toe clips! The pedals are Shimano PD-A520 (used). Here is my brief impression report below:

When you bring SPD in, it means the main purpose of your bicycle is no more such things like just a short ride to shops in town, but rather long tour rides. This paradigm shift was exactly what I intended. First of all, the SPD shoes. In the beginning, I thought of Shimano products to companion with the pedals, but I bought Vittoria 1976 model from Italy as I liked the design that reminds me of Camper. The shoes had many ventilation holes on the leather surface and may not suit in the rainy condition. Walking with this pair, the steps will click just like tap-dance shoes.

It is always cautioned that everybody will inevitably fell down a few times with SPD failing to release the lock when the bike stops, so the first thing we do is to practice locking/releasing repeatedly. I managed it quite easily with the lock setting at the loose position. Setting it tighter, it might reduce the play of the shoes on the pedal. The release action is simply to twist the heel outward, but if your shoes are loose, the action may not be executed firmly. While the pedals and the shoes are securely unified, missing a tight joint between your feet and the shoes will collaps the entire methodology. Therefore a careful choice of shoes for a tight fit with the feet is essential. I use two layers of insoles to improve the fitting.

Pedaling usually means to push left and right down alternatively, but with SPD you can pull up the resting leg to add the driving force, so the movement will be more rotational than pistonic. It is not easy to master the movement and I felt the need for some exercise.

Well then, out to the streets to try stops and runs at the signals and the slopes! The click sound is so comfortable when the shoe is locked. The releases were flawless before the stops, and I had no fears and worries about felling. I can no more do without SPD now...

Lucia di Lammermoor

As an invited guest, my friend asked me if I was interested in accompanying him for Donizetti’s opera, and I went to Teatro Giglio of Showa Music Academy in Shin-Yurigaoka. It was my first visit to this hall and to an Italian opera performed by Japanese artists. The unexpected fruit was the remarkable tenor, Yojiro Oyama as the role of Edgardo. He definitely stood out among the soloists with highly dramatic tension on top of his lyrical and clear character of the voice and intelligently controlled singing skill, which made me think nothing needed to be added. Ms. Akie Mitsuoka as Lucia went off the keys just occasionally in Act I, but the mad scene was quite dependable and received huge applause. When it comes to Lucia, legendary is Maria Callas, but the title role is always tempting for the singers indeed.
The acoustic of Teatro Giglio was very, very dry. The orchestra or the stage did not sound distant probably because of this acoustic property. The drum beats were wonderfully deep, but the drawback of this hall was that some sound localized on the corner of front left and right ends especially in loud passages, and it even made me wonder if they had buried some speakers there for sound reinforcement.

Measures for earthquakes

I know some recommendable CD racks but their size did not match with my listening room requirement, and consequently found this Audio Technica product about a couple of years ago which was exactly 80cm wide and suitably tall enough.
Astonished was I when it was delivered and as I opened the carton box because the wooden-print sheet of a side panel surface was half peeled out, and it automatically returned to the shop for a replacement.
The white selves seemed okay with metal rib-like enforcement in the beginning, but they began to bend when it was filled up with CD’s. The chip board shelves must be rather soft, and I had to insert wooden braces of 220mm or 142mm high between the shelves to reinforce them.
During this carpenter work, I realized how fragile the structure of these shelves was, particularly under the situation of extraordinary number of earthquakes recently, and I decided to bolt the shelves onto the wall. This was a rather crude craft using poorly refined L-shape metal pieces, but they are now rigidly fixed to the wall and stay still with all distortions eliminated.

Season 2011/12 in Paris -

The new season’s catalog has arrived from Opera Comique. Over there, Gardiner must be conducting “Der Freischütz” in this week though I gave up the idea of traveling this year. The programs of Opera Comique may tend to be much sophisticated, and I could not find anything interesting to me in the forthcoming season unfortunately. At this point, I thought it might be good to check other concert halls.
First of all, l’Opéra National de Paris. There are popular programs lined up and it must appeal to opera fans, but I would pass them. One thing interesting was the stage of a ballet school.

Next, I investigated Salle Pleyel where I downloaded 70-page thick PDF catalog filled with so many renowned artists, conductors and orchestras, which looked totally magnificent. Just picking some for my own interest, for example, Gardiner and Monteverdi Choir perform Brahms, Stravinsky and Bruckner on October 24; Järvi, Suwanai and Orchestre de Paris play Mendelssohn violin concerto No. 2 and Symphonie Fantastique on November 10; Gergief and London Symphony collaborate with Anne-Sophie Mutter to play Tchaikovsky violin concerto and Shostakovich symphony No. 6 on November 29. Also interesting is that many of American orchestras are scheduled to visit Paris in the autumn.

The last but not the least is the concert under Pyramid of Musée Louvre. One would recall that it started with Boulez and Orchestre de Paris to play Firebird toward the end of 2008 that could be watched on the net, too. This admission-free event comes back twice next season on the winter and summer solstices. December 20, Boulez conducts Schoenberg and Baltok, and on June 21 next year, Kristjan Järvi conducts Falla, Ravel and Rodrigo. The entire Paris is in the festival of music on the day.

Kinugasayama Park, Yokosuka

Hearing that the cherry blossoms were in full bloom around me, I did not feel like having a sakura-watching this year with my tension fully down, but today’s clear sky must have washed away such depressed feelings, and I ran to Kinugasayama Park on my bicycle. The trigger was the conversation with a friend of mine regarding long distance running with a road racer, and I was given from him a front-gear inner chain ring for enhancing the power of ascending by replacing 42T ring with his 38T. Well, I did a lazy run last month to Akiya, but more thorough training runs to Yokosuka or Misaki for example should be considered. And I picked this Kinugasa because the cherries in the park could be a bonus. I checked the route using Google Map to confirm 16km forth and 19km back, taking 7 hours 13 minutes on foot or roughly 1.5 hours by car. Starting Cyclemeter in my iPhone, I left Zushi around 10:30.

The route was generally flat with only two minor ups and downs both ways, and I arrived at Kinugasa train station with no rests in about 45 minutes. The shopping area looked much larger here than Zushi. When the shops end, I made a right turn and the road was uprising. I took a small path with the sign post of Park Entrance. The slope became steeper in front of a brand new condominium and I got off my bike and walked under sakura trees up to the parking. I left my bicycle there because no wheels were allowed in the park.

The peak of the blossoms seemed over by the last weekend and the green leaves were getting gradually dominant. In the open space on the top of the park were people in small groups having lunch or just relaxing. The petals swingingly fell as the wind blew. The size of the park and the number of sakura trees were both small, but the view of the sea over the trees was very nice.

After having a good rest and a small bite, I left the park with easy downhill in the beginning. When I got back to Route 26, the wind was strong against me and the road was ascending slightly. It was very tiring as if my body was full lactic acid. I could only move very slowly, and in the meantime a long downhill to the shore was in front of me. I recovered my pace fully and speedily passed Akiya and Hayama. The total running time was almost 2.5 hours, the average speed 13.66km/h, the fastest 49.07km/h, and the energy consumption 1046 calories according to Cyclemeter record. The level of running must be that of beginners as I do not push myself hard.

Schütz Choir and the Passion

Another topic of bicycles: It’s motor-driven PiCycle developed by a San Francisco venture company. The aluminium arch frame is definitely unique in design, and the price is reported $2500 which is less than a half of Audi’s. The wheels are 24" front and 26" rear. The wheel base is 113cm long and it seems like a large bike.
As it can be driven by the motor alone without pedaling, it may not be regarded as “motor-assisted” vehicle by definition, and then it is questionable if it is allowed to run the streets in Japan.

Cambridge Audio Azur650BD

I got this universal player in a shop’s deal of their display samples. It works with SACD, Blu-ray and even DVD-Audio, and also outputs DSD stream of SACD meeting my criteria almost entirely.
The delivered package was relatively heavy and I felt it promising, although the actual weight of the unit was not so heavy. Playing discs, the metal top cover vibrated rather wildly along with the motor rotation which probably needs some damping. The noise of the mechanism sounded toy’ish while the response was very quick. There is a PURE AUDIO button on the remote that instantaneously turns off the video section, which I liked.
Universal players appear to accept any discs, but the reality as expected with this player was not supporting home-made DVD’s that digitally copied the broadcast programs. BD-R was also rejected, but somehow BD-RE discs were accepted. The player features USB terminals for playing music or photos on your SD card. Unfortunately, AAC was not supported in the audio format, therefore my iPod won’t be able to take advantage of this feature.

This is the very first time my system enjoys DSD stream from the player to the A/V controller, and I was excited to play my favorite SACD discs. To date, generally speaking, I haven’t been fully satisfied with the sound of SACD except the case of a friend of mine who had a Sharp digital amp and its companion SACD player that represented an amazing S/N quality an its quietness of the program was utterly breathtaking.
Well, Azur650BD did not provide the same sense of S/N with my system unfortunately. The overall sound was upright, nervously slim as I often feel it a typical character with SACD. Does this have something to do with the SAEC’s HDMI cable? The sales guy at the audio shop suggested an AIM or even analog cabling to try...
I then played some discs of 2L as they allow comparison of Blu-ray and SACD in the same program. Blu-ray is essentially high-bit PCM audio with lossless compression, and it had much clearer dimensional perspectives. Its acoustic space sounded much larger while with SACD the front and the back seemed overlapping to result in a rather flat soundstage. It is definitely a challenge to tackle for further improvement in SACD listening.

2-wheels from Audi

The new 2-wheels from Audi have a modern and classic appeal. Over $6000 price is too far for me to reach but the wooden frame is attractive enough. 3 models of duo Road, duo Sport, and duo City are prepared in 2 different frame colors of red and brown, Road with 20-speed transmission, Sport with Shimano Alfine internal 11-speed gear hub and 28mm tires, and City with Shimano Nexus internal 8-speed gear hub and 32mm tires. No mention of the weight.

FT - Femtocell in my room

My listening room is situated in downstairs, virtually half-buried by tall walls, preventing cellular waves to reach although it is actually on the ground level. I don’t know about other carriers but Softbank's barely works.
A solution is provided by Softbank for free of charge, and I registered for the service. It is named “Home Antenna FT” and a small transmitter box functions as a 3G antenna that connects via LAN to the main 3G pipeline through Internet. Waiting for almost 2 months, a router arrived first and then a femtocell device followed later. I placed them in the listening room; they only required connecting to my network with not extra settings, but the device indicators repeated red (turn on) and green/blink (loading) for quite a while, so I went upstairs leaving them behind. When I came back later, they were up and running. Now as many as five bars are on my iPhone indicating full wave strength, and I won’t miss incoming calls any more.

Are you guys amateur?

I could not believe my ears when I heard the news of 3 workers of Todenko who were exposed to radiation in one the the reactor buildings in Fukushima plant. Two of them went in the facility with their own low shoes and got wet walking in the puddle! It has been rumored that this plant is loose in administration and that they had many minor accidents and failures for years. No words can be found for this accident except sloppiness.
Firemen or electric engineers may come for operations in their own uniform, but the order to thoroughly check and ensure them in a radiation-proof costume from the tiptoes to the top of the hair before sending them out to the battle field is the very first step that must be found in the manual even for beginners. Or Tepco does not care the subcontractors?

And then, the fuss of their measurement of extremely dangerous 2.9 billion becquerels of iodine-134 per cm3 Saturday. They later informed that they were mistaken identifying the radioactive component and it could be cobalt-56 instead of iodine-134. Early in Sunday morning they finally amended it to be cesium-134 with 3-digit lower level. Dumbfounded...

I really appreciate the employees’ continued and devoted effort risking their lives, but as the failures pop out one after another in their risk management, it means the problem is essentially in their management of system and organization.
“They estimated the foreseeable risk level too low and delayed the countermeasures” writes Le Monde with the comment of a related specialist saying “ the catastrophe was provoked by human carelessness rather than by nature”. It appears they reflect the reality...

Kunugiya, Yufuin

We visited Yufuin for the first time. I searched lodgings that were not super classy in advance, and reserved one night each at Hananomai and Auberge Kunugiya. The weather was unfortunately rather cold these two days as if the winter came back, and we heard Japanese warbler’s singing while it snowed in the morning. Still the visit was comfortably relaxing.
Contrasting to Beppu in decline, Yufuin successfully managed to gain a reputation among young female travelers as a national brand destination. Seriously, there is nothing very special in this remote village in the mountain, and it is difficult to explain why Yufuin is so much loved by them. There are mountains, brooks, fields; that is a landscape of good old country as a whole. In addition is the hot spring. It would be even more comfortable to be here in the springtime.
For the second night, we stayed at Auberge Kunugiya, located more than 100 meters higher into the mountain from the village center, and the next further up was the renowned retreat Murata. They seldom need the air-conditioner in the summer up here. Kunugiya had a separate one-story room for music listening, and all the furniture was of George Nakashima, which displayed slightest passion of the owner’s taste. Linn Kaber was sitting as the audio system in the room with Marantz CD5003 player. Because the guests operate this system, it tends to go broken occasionally, and this player was chosen as the third or fourth generation successor. It was amusing to find some common taste with mine among two or three dozens of CD albums, such as Landowska, Gould or Enya. An impressive disc in this collection of the owner’s past uncle was the music of Spain in the 15th and 16th century performed by New London Consort, and the recording quality by Linn Records was brilliant.
I noted some tasteful Arita ceramics in this lodging’s interior by scanning the lighting stands, the plates and the likes. They were fine articles of Gen-uemon or Fukagawa. I learned later that the owner had been an old acquaintance with Gen-uemon. Even the cups in the washing room or the plates of electric outlet were no plastic in Kunugiya. Similarly in the first lodging, Hananomai, some attractive dinnerware was specially made for the chef by his friend ceramic artist. Because Kyushu is one of the major areas of producing ceramics, it was exciting to confirm the level of local appreciation. The auberge was built 20 years ago and it made our stay very much at home while it served just like a gallery by itself.

My report about the lodging dinners should be uploaded in my separate blog “visibeau mange-ou”.
