GPSマップのGalileo

自転車や旅目的の地図閲覧にGarmin 800が欲しいとずっと思いつつ、出費が馬鹿にならないのでここまで手を出さないでiPhoneを活用してきた。今回の旅でも巡礼路のルートマップとナビをどうするか決めなくてはならないのだが、普段使っているルートラボ、DIY GPS、Cyclemeterなどはいずれも期待できない。理由のひとつは海外地図へのアクセスと入手性。地図があっても海外で常時ローミングして地図表示したら厖大な通話料の心配がある。そこで必要条件を整理してみると、

1.   オフライン地図を使ってGPSでの位置表示をする

2.   自分が作ったルートを地図上に表示できる

3.   8時間程度の動作維持が可能

まず上記条件に叶うIOSのアプリを探し直してみたのだが、Galileoというオフライン地図アプリに行き着いた。地図の細かさについてはGoogleマップには及ばずかなり大まかという印象だが、GPXファイルにしたルートを読み込んで表示させる世界各地の地図が手に入る。街中では場所捜しに困ることもなさそうだ。

自作のルートについてはStravaサイトで新たにルート作成機能が登場し、世界中のどこでもサイクリングとウォーキングに区分けしてGPXファイルとして保存可能になった。これを出力して、Galileoに読み込ませれば良い。

もうひとつの懸案、電池の持ちについては、iPad miniというのがひとつの選択だろう。地図の閲覧は楽だし、10時間くらいの使用は見込める。でも僕は第1世代iPadに愛想を尽かせて手放したので、買い直す必要がある。もうひとつの選択は単純にiPhoneのままで補充電池を持参という妥協案だ。こちらは自転車での使用に有利。取り敢えず、脚が治ったらGalileo上の日本地図でテスト走行してみようと思う。

Garmin 800 has long been on my shopping list for map viewing in travels as well as bike riding, but its cots has just prevented me to date with the option of iPhone as a practical alternative. For the forthcoming trip of pilgrimage, I need to decide what to do with route maps and navigation since none of Route Lab, DIY GPS or Cyclemeter that I now use suit for the purpose. The primary reason is the availability and accessibility of overseas maps. If I keep loaming to refresh the map on display, the phone cost could be enormous outside Japan. The criteria would be something like those listed below:

1.   To display the location with GPS on a offline map

2.   Ability of showing the route I created on the map

3.   Roughly 8 hours of operating time

I did the research of IOS apps that satisfied the above requirements from the scratch again, and came across with Galileo Offline Maps. The preciseness of maps cannot rival with that of Google Maps with a quick look, but it would be sufficient for finding a specific destination in towns. The real advantage is the ability of loading GPX files on variety of available maps of the world to view routes.

As for my own particular routes, Strava site now features a new function of creating routes under the definition of cycling or walking and output them as GPX files. The rest is to load them in Galileo application.

Another concern of mine is the battery life, and one ultimate answer would be iPad that is ideal for map viewing and allows 10 hours operation time. I was actually frustrated with the first generation iPad and gave it up, and thus I need to buy the new one for this approach. Another answer is simply to stick with the current iPhone but carry an external battery, this can probably extend the operation to 5-6 hours and advantageous in bike running. I will experiment it upon the recovery of my knee using a domestic map.

Scarpa vs Salomon - トレッキングシューズ物色中

膝の怪我は内側靱帯を伸ばした軽傷の部類で、普通に戻るには2ヶ月くらい必要とのこと。膝周りの筋力強化を含むトレーニングは早くても4月からになりそう。20km強の距離を7日間歩き続ける準備に肝心の靴について、これまで履いていたScarpaはソールがすり減ってきたし、小指のあたりが狭くて血豆の原因でもあったので、早めに新しい靴を探すことにした。自転車に乗ることも考え軽くて、但し歩く時はしっかりグリップできる靴。そんなうまい話があるだろうか？僕は踝にかかるミッドカットの靴が好きなのだが、たまたまネットでセールになっていたSalomon Viaggio GTXという靴をあまり熟考もせず見た眼で衝動買いした。重さは405g x2とScarpaよりは20%軽い。Salomonは細いとの世評通り幅は2Eで、Scarpaより細身に見える。ただ形状は小指の横から先端にかけて急に細くなるScarpaに対し、Salomonはカーブがやや緩くもっと手前が細くなっている感じだ。靴の後部分は踝への立ち上がりがもっと垂直に近い。これが足に慣れるかどうか履いてみて、ダメならワイド+ローカットで探すつもり。

My injury was the stretched ligament inside of the knee, relatively light damage, but it will take 2-3 months to get back to normal. Trainings focusing the muscles around the knee may be started from April earliest. Despite the situation, I had been look for a pair of shoes in preparation for continued 7-day walks of over 20km per day because the outer soles of my Scarpa’s are worn out and its narrow foot shape causes to ache little fingers. Something light enough for bike riding yet solid enough for long walking hopefully! As I love mid-cut designs, I bought Salomon Viaggio GTX instantly upon seeing it on the net without much thought. It weighs 2 x405g, 20% less than Scarpa. As many users commented, its shape was narrow and indeed specified as 2E, but the outer curve looks gentler than Scarpa which bends quickly from little finger side toward the toe, therefore in case of Salomon the narrow pressure stays closer to the pad than the fingers. The back of Salomon is more upright than Scarpa, and I will see how the new one fits me. If not, I will probably go for a low-cut, wide pair instead.

Bicigrino Planning – 巡礼路の自転車走計画

一人旅と覚悟していた5月のスペイン歩きだが、友人から奥様の許可が出そうとの明るい情報が入ってきた。

コンポステラの巡礼路にあてがえる日数は15日、そうなるとまともに歩いても全行程の1/3程度なので今回の徒歩区間は終盤のレオン以降に決め、あとはその手前をどれだけ自転車で追加できるか考えた。しかし何が起こるか分からない旅では調整を兼ねた余裕も必要で、最終的にはパンプローナからブルゴスまでの220kmを4日間の自転車旅行として、そこから最後の山場とされるセブレイロ峠手前までの間はバスでつなぎ、途中レオンでの調整日を入れる計画にした。この中間部分は平坦な大平原で歩くと単調だろうと予想したが、自転車なら飛ばせる区間とも言える。参考までに自転車ルートマップを添えるが、初日は足慣らしと自転車の調整なども考慮して峠越えひとつの短距離22.6kmでPuente la Reinaまでにとどめる。2日目はいくつかのアップ･ダウンを繰り返す山岳コース57.5kmを走ってLogroño近辺に投宿、3日目は58.2kmでCarzadaまで、そして最終日は長めの68.4kmだが最高高度の峠1160mを過ぎると残り30kmは下りが続く。

自転車ツアーに関しては不安もあって、或る経験者のブログには「自転車で巡礼路を行くのはかなりハードで、ボクのランドナーでは無理だ。ほとんどハイキング道のようで、所々には急坂や階段もあるから…。巡礼路を行くMTBはおよそ時速10キロから13キロほどで、ダートと泥濘に苦しめられている。」という記述がある。さらにイヤフォンで音楽を聞きながら歩く巡礼者と自転車野郎のすれ違いざまのつばぜり合いという議論も盛んだ。一方、一般道を通ると時速100km/hを越す猛スピードで横を走り抜けるトラックの風圧に煽られながら進む危険との戦いだと言われる。チャリはのんびり、おとなしく巡礼路をというのが基本に思われる。

などと計画や準備を着々と進めていた昨日、いつも問題となる右膝の腱を雪道でまた痛めてしまった。この時期に体調がマイナス側に振れたのでは、しばらくトレーニングはおろか、この旅行プラン自体が「無駄足」になりそうで気が萎える。そんな折りにスペインからはレンタサイクルで目星を付けていたCycling-Rentalsというお店から問い合わせに対する丁寧な返信（英語）が届く。自転車の引き渡し、引き取りの手順など不明点のひとつひとつに明確な説明をしてもらい、「巡礼路の大半は道の状態も良いので、MTBじゃなくても、このツアー･ロード車でタイアの心配はいらないよ」とのアドバイス。そして僕が希望するBH Zephireのツアー用ロードモデル(27速-48/38/28T)で4日間ツアーのフルパッケージ料金は約€187との見積だった。

I almost determined that the walk to Compostela would be all by myself alone, but delighting news came from my friend that his wife basically said okay for him to go to the trip.

We have 15 days for traveling St. James Way that is only enough to cover 1/3 of the entire route, and thus my plan is that we concentrate the walk from Leon or even closer and add as many days as possible on bike before Leon. We also need to save margins and adjustments to deal with whatever happens, and my current conclusion is to run 220km on bike from Pamplona to Burgos in 4 days, take buses between Burgos and Cebreiro allowing some rest in Leon. Images attached here show our bike route starting with conservative 22.6km to Puenta la Reina, gradually increasing the distance via Viana near Logroño, Santo Domingo de Carzada. The final 68.4km is long and involves attacking 1160m high pass but 30km afterward is pure descent to Burgos.

Unknown route running causes some concerns. A predecessor’s blog quotes “it looks rather tough for bikes to go on the pilgrim roads, and I thought my randonneur bike wouldn’t manage it. MTB’s speed appeared to be 10 to 13km/h.” The topic of antagonistic atmosphere between the bike riders and the walkers with iPod are too popular in the net. On the other hand, if we take the normal roads, we will have to deal with the risk of pressures by trucks that pass over 100km/h speed.  

And while I was busy on such things of planning, I slipped on the snow yesterday to damage my always-problematic right knee. If the needle swings to negative in this timing, the training plan diminishes and the travel itself might miss its goal. But in the meantime, an impressively nice e-mail reply came from Cycling-Rentals in Spain explaining all the details about delivery/collection etc, and they commented that the Camino roads are generally in good condition suitable for road touring bikes. They quoted €187 for my planned tour.

突然のポルトガル旅行が決まった。それはカミさんの話だが、きっかけは僕の友人が今年はコンポステーラの巡礼路歩きに繰り出せないかと持ちかけてきたこと。折しも英国航空が安値の航空券を喧伝していて、その状況を調べまくった結果さすがに往復2-3万円台というのはサーチャージなしの裸値段で実勢とはほど遠く、それでも5月中にエールフランスならパリ経由でリスボンなど11万くらいのフライトが見つかった。

僕はスペインを歩いてからそこに合流しようと計画を始める。フランスのサンジャン・ピエ・ド・ポールからサンチャゴまでは700km、45日くらいの道のりだ。僕はチケットのコスト制約から全旅程を1ヶ月以内にしなければならない。後半のポルトガルに10日あてがうと残るは20日程度、どこを飛ばしてどこを歩くか検討した末に辿り着いた答えはレンタサイクルと歩きを半々でスタートはパンプローナから。それをそそるかのような美しい写真もとある書き込みサイトで遭遇。詳細は後日に回すが、さすがスペインらしくBHの自転車に乗れそうだ。因みにツーリングタイプのZephireは3日で€65に対し、カーボンロードレーサーのSpeedromは倍近い料金。但し巡礼路にロードレーサーは無理だろう。

A capriciously sudden decision of travel to Portugal has been reached. It’s the story of my wife, but everything started from my conversation with a friend who asked me if we could execute the walk on St. James pilgrim road in this summer. I saw a timely advertising of cheap prices to Europe by Bristish Airways, and I immediately investigated. Well, their claim of €200-300 was excuding necessary surcharges to result merely ordinary prices in most part. Still, I found some AirFrance flights via Paris for <€800 in end May which was attractive.

So my own plan is to walk in Spain first and then merge with my wife’s travel in Portugal, and I have to complete the whole thing within a month because of airticket budget while the French Way would need some 45 days departing St. Jean Pied de Port. Roughly ten days would be spent in Portugal that leaves only 20 days in Spain, and my conclusion was half-on-bike and half-on-foot from Pamplona to Santiago that would physically fit in my time schedule. BH bikes can be rented literally in Spain! Zephire as touring model cost €65 for 3 days and Speedrom road model costs almost a double although the latter would not be the right choice for the pilgrim roads.

我が家の照明 9 – Lighting in my home: Vistosi

僕は照明器具が好きなので、デザイン主体で選んだものたちは勢い白熱灯が中心で、中には特殊な形状の電球などもあって、省エネ面では若干後れを取っている。これは生活の質と考えて、味気なく生きないように自分に言い聞かせている。
先日、久しぶりに照明器具を購入した。きっかけはリビングの蛍光灯シーリングライトがちょっと不調気味で、そろそろ寿命なら買い換え時期かと冷やかし気分のネットクルーズを始めたこと。たまたまオフィチーノの5割引アウトレットで2,3の製品に目が行った。その中でVistosiの小さなスタンドをポチるのに、2晩熟慮した。イタリアン･ガラスのセードがクラシックな雰囲気も備えていて、置き場所は今すぐではないが、ベッドサイドライトとして収まる予定。

I am always attracted by lighting equipment. I may be behind the trend of energy-saving as I choose them based on the product design resulting with traditional light balls. This, I consider, falls in sort of inevitable quality of life.
Recently, I bought a new one after long absence. It all started with my net cruise because the ceiling light in our living room began behaving strange occasionally, and considering how long it continued working, it may soon be the timing for a replacement. In Officino site where I often visit for imported lights, I found a few interesting products with 50% discount. I bought a small Vistosi stand after two nights' contemplation that will sit as the bed-side stand for visitor or for myself. Its Italian glass body offers refined yet classic atmosphere.

New Album of Bach/Gardiner – ガーディナーのバッハ新譜

カップリングされた復活祭オラトリオと106番カンタータはともに昔から大好きな曲だ。このリリース予定は合唱団からのDMで知っていたが、ジャケ写を含む発売案内はHMVが初出。2/20の発売が楽しみ。僕が初めて買った復活祭オラトリオのLPはミュンヒンガー指揮・ソプラノにアメリンクのロンドン盤で、1970年発売の愛聴盤だ。ガーディナー／モンテヴェルディ合唱団は昨年8月にプロムスで復活祭及び昇天オラトリオを公演しているが、YouTubeで聞く限り完成度としては今ひとつという印象だったので、この6月録音ではさらに集中度が高いことを祈る。

The coupling of Easter Oratorio and BWV106, both being long-time favorites of mine, will soon be released on Feb 20. HMV site now posted its jacket image for the first time. My first LP of Easter Oratorio was the feature of Munchinger/Ameling bought in 1970. Gardiner/Monteverdi Choir performed this oratorio in 2013 Proms in August, and it didn’t reach ultimacy in my impression through YouTube. I hope this recording in June shows more concentration.

年末に発注したディスク – Discs I Ordered before Last Year-End

師走にCD数枚を海外発注していたのがすべて手元に揃った。まずGimell盤のタリス･スコラーズ2枚のうち、年内すぐにバードが届いた。良い響きの録音だ。マニフィカートなど2曲は25年ほど前の彼らのCDにも収録されており、聴き比べるとそれほどの年月を隔てながら声質も曲想も極めて近いことに驚かされる。但し残響込みで遠めな響きがどうしても2次元的に聞こえてしまう。翻って新録音では自然な空間再現が心地よい。

この録音は元々、Byrdの生涯を追跡するBBCのテレビ番組企画のために収録したもので、その内容はYouTubeでも見ることができる。

ルセの平均律クラフィア第2巻が新譜発売ということで、これは予約注文した。カミさんがその中の曲を練習していて参考になるディスクはないかと言うのだが、うちにはグールドとリヒテルしかない。調べてみてもチェンバロのディスクはあまり多くないのが分かった。そんな時にルセの発売予定に遭遇したので、これは待つ価値がありそうだと思った。演奏はかなりゆっくり目な曲が多く、予想以上に真面目な、それでも重々しくないのでまずまず楽しく聴けている。チェンバロはフレミッシュ系の響き。

去年買ったロ短調ミサでサヴァールに填まってしまい、モツレクを衝動買いで注文の1枚に追加しておいた。3年ほど前に颯爽としたアーノンクール盤を買ったが、こちらは対称的に柔和な演奏。いずれもSACDのサラウンド録音だ。1991年の録音でソプラをサヴァールと同志のモンセラート・フィゲラスが歌っている。

さてタリス･スコラーズのもう一枚はPure-Audio Blu-rayの新譜なので予約注文、内容はルネサンス期の宗教曲で、アレグリの「ミゼレーレ」はシステナ礼拝堂で門外不出とされるのをモーツァルトが一度聞いて暗記したという逸話が残る曲だ。あとはパレストリーナのミサ曲。収録は2007年だから、伝送フォーマットの96kHz24bitが録音フォーマットなのだと思う。mShuttleのサイトでPC用にファイルのダウンロードもあるようだが、そこまでは試していない。

Gravity - ゼロ･グラビティ

I went to United Cinemas Toshimaen to see Gravitiy in IMAX 3D last night and was not much impressed. I guess my expectation was excessive because of the reputation I heard from some friends around me. I entirely admit that the technical staff did a great job in this film, but the script itself was between the second and the third grade so to speak. I don’t want to disclose the story elements here, but some factors that deteriorated the reality in the story were, for example, Dr. Stone’s character presented by Sandra Bullock was totally unlikely for an astronaut, and also some scenes along the important storyline looked against the laws of physics.

One comment on the camera crews is, toward the end of this movie, while I understand they had to choose a close camera setting to achieve some 3D effect, the water splash on the camera lens could have stimulated the reality of the situation, if only it were a documentary movie!

IMAX 3D seems still using a linear polarlizer as I see noticeable visual crosstalk with a slight tilt of the head. I think I should try Dolby Atmos theater in Maihama next time considering the balance of 3D and sound quality.

Toshimaen Amusement Park in front of the Station

昨夜はゼロ･グラビティを観に豊島園のユナイテッド･シネマズに行ったが、映画には感動しなかった。周囲の前評判の良さに期待が大きすぎたのかも。技術スタッフの努力はとにかく凄いよね、でも脚本自体が2流と3流の間くらいのグレードだった。ストーリーについてここでネタバレさせるつもりはないけど、サンドラ･バロック演ずるストーン博士の役作りが何しろ宇宙飛行士には全く不適合だし、ストーリー進行に不可欠なシーンの中には物理法則に鑑みてあり得ないような稚拙さも見受けられた。

最後の場面では水しぶきが撮影カメラのレンズにかかるのだが、ドキュメンタリー映画じゃないんだから、これは臨場感というより興ざめだと思う。もちろん3D効果のために被写体に寄せなくちゃならないのは理解しているけどね。

IMAX 3Dでは今も線偏光フィルターで立体を作っているようで、首を傾けるとすぐにクロストークが現れる。画質と音質のバランスを考えると、次は舞浜のドルビー･アトモス劇場で鑑賞してみたい。

宮脇昭、果てなき戦い – Endless Battle of Akira Miyazaki

震災後、処理に難航する瓦礫を土台にして、広葉樹の堤防で自然治癒力的な森作りを提唱した宮脇教授のアイディアは注目を浴びた。その着想を僕も素晴らしいと感じた。それは単なる思いつきではなく、この植物社会学者が生涯取り組んできた日本固有の森の再構築という壮大な作業の一環なのだとこの本で知る。本物が発する凄さと面白さでこの一冊は一気に読み終えた。震災後こうした構想が杓子定規な産廃処理法などでテンポ良く進まないのが何としても残念。

Professor Miyazaki’s proposal after the catastrophe was to use the huge heap of tsunami and quake debris as the basis to build forests with traditional Japanese trees that function as seawall along Tohoku coastline, that I thought was a brilliant idea and actually attracted fairly large media attention. In reading this book, you will understand that this idea of his did not just popped up but whole his life as botanical sociologist has been devoted to recreate diminishing landscapes with variety of trees in our country. Regrettably, the progress is rather limited because of inflexible laws regarding the processing of industrial wastes.

KITTE Building

東京駅丸の内口の中央郵便局が古い建物の面影を残しつつ背後に高層ビルを完成させたのは今年の3月、これまで特に用がなく行くことはなかったのだが、乗り換えついでに駅を出て訪ねてみた。KITTEの中はショップやレストランで、6Fは屋上庭園になっていて駅舎や列車の往き来をぼんやり眺めるにはとても良いロケーションだ。

僕の眼にすぐ留まったのは各階のウォール仕様で、高級感のあるウッドをふんだんに使って暖かみを醸しつつ、各階ごとに表情を変えたウッドの使いこなしが印象的だった。ショップはそっちのけで壁ばかり眺めて帰った。

In front of Tokyo Station, Marunouchi exit, is Tokyo Central Post Office, and they opened the new tall building last March while retaining the surface of old architecture. I have no chance to visit it to date, but I got off at the station as I needed to transfer today. Inside KITTE are variety of shops and restaurants, and up on the 6^th floor is a rooftop garden whose location is perfect for watching the station building and trains coming in and going out.

On each floor are wooden walls that provide classy yet warm atmosphere, and I was so interested in the different texture and style on each floor that I was busy watching them instead of shops.

ガリレオ･プロジェクト演奏会 - Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra: The Galileo Project

土曜日に三鷹芸術文化センターでターフェルムジーク･バロック合奏団の「ガリレオ･プロジェクト」演奏会に行きました。ガリレオ生誕400年を機に企画されたワールド･ツアーで、僕は直前になって彼らの来日を知り慌ててチケットを探しました。幸いと言うべきかこの団体も会場もメジャーではないせいか、週末の三鷹･青葉台とも空席が残っていて、あれこれ考えた末、ステージに近い2階横のR13/14席（A席5000円）を電話で確保しました。ホールに入ってみると、2階横のL/R1〜12は照明スタンドの配置などで空けられていて、僕の席が一番端でした。ここからはステージの様子が丸々俯瞰できて大正解でした。

今回のテーマは天文学が花開く17世紀、ガリレオからニュートンへの物語を当時の音楽で綴って聞かせるもので、代表的な作曲家の作品が網羅されています。

ステージにはスコアは持ち込まず、全員すべて暗譜です。舞台はそうあるべきだと、僕も自分の合唱で痛感してはいますが、大変なことです。15名程度の演奏者たちは低音楽器のチェンバロ、チェロ、コントラバスを真ん中に置いて、あとは周囲を取り囲むように小グループ毎に掛け合いをするのですが、舞台にはバッチリ円形に模様が描かれています。時には円陣となってそこをぐるぐる回りながら、脚でリズムを踏んでみたり、踊るような演奏をします。この辺りはこの楽団の真骨頂というところなのでしょう。こうした演出は僕の席からはバッチリ楽しめました。ジーン･ラモンは以前から音楽の源流とその文化論的な役割に関心があるようで、それは例えば彼らの「調和の幻想」CDに同梱されているDVD – The Four Seasons Mosaic （四季のモザイク）を観れば明らかだと思います。演奏者の一部はさらに1階席に散らばったり、2階席後方に移動したりして、ホール全体をあたかも宇宙空間に見立てて最大限の広がりで演奏したり、一般には馴染みの薄い音楽に飽きさせない工夫も凝らしていました。

ジーン･ラモンの疾走型で勢いのあるバロック演奏には、ヘンデルの合奏協奏曲を聴いて以来好意的に付き合っていますが、生の演奏はCDのシャープな音色よりは全然柔らかく聞こえました。彼らの演奏は3年前にトロントでメサイアを歌う演奏会に行って一度聞いてはいますが、その時は大きなフルオケでしたし、状況も違ったので、今回の室内合奏規模がちょうど好ましい比較対象でした。印象に残ったこととしては、リュリの作品がオーセンティックな風格をもつ音楽だと初めて気付いたのと、締めくくりに演奏されたバッハがやはり自分としては良かったことです。

ところで当日は三鷹駅から文化センターまで歩いたのですが、八幡様の境内に明らかに楽団員と見える3人の外人が普段着で散策しているのに遭遇しました。僕は連れ合いに「あの男性は多分オーボエか何かを吹いていたと思う」と説明しましたが、開演30分前というのに何たる余裕なの！と連れ合いは信じてくれません。果たしてその人物は2曲目にオーボエを持ってステージに登場してきました。良く見るとコントラバスの女性も3人の1人でした。ステージでの彼らは実に楽しそうで、緊張とは無縁という感じでした。

八ヶ岳の紅葉巡り - Autumnal Colors around Yatsugatake

友人から今年は唐松の色付きが凄くて今が見頃と電話をもらい、八ヶ岳高原を訪問することにした。小海線の甲斐大泉近くの八ヶ岳高原大橋は南アルプスや富士山も臨めるパノラマ展望スポットだ。
A friend of mine phoned me telling the larch yellow was just in its peak and great that drove me to visit Yatsugatake area immediately. As we get in the Koumi train line area, the Yellow Bridge near Oizumi offers the panoramic views of not only Yatsu but also Mt. Fuji and South Alps.

Shinano-Kawakami

増富温泉の奥に奥入瀬風の渓流に沿って紅葉を楽しめる道があるのを教えてもらったが、あいにくの雨でここは来年の楽しみに取っておくことにした。その代わり雨上がりの空に巨大な虹のプレゼント。
There was a nice path beyond Masutomi hotspring with autumn colors along a torrent, but it was raining unfortunately, and I thought I should visit there next year again. I still enjoyed a great rainbow in the sky!

Nobeyama

2日目は雲ひとつない快晴。八ヶ岳には初冠雪という絶景を拝む。
The second day was fair and clear without a cloud, and the bonus was the first snow cap this fall on the mountain.

開拓の碑というのが広大な農場の中に立っていて、その両側にはふたつの地域がそれぞれのモニュメントを別個に並べている。山を眺めるには良い場所だ。

もう少し遠くの展望台、野辺山高原（平沢峠）に向かう途中、電波望遠鏡天文台を過ぎた辺りの景色に魅せられてカメラに収める。
Another vista point of mountains, a bit further away, is Nobeyama-Kogen/Hirasawa Pass. As we passed Nobeyama Observatory on our way, I was enchanted by the landscape and stopped the car to take pictures.

晩秋の白根･万座 – The Autumn Ends in Shirane/Manza

草津志賀道路は10月26日、雪と凍結で閉鎖となり、翌月5日からの冬季閉鎖前倒しかなと思っていたら、さすがに3連休は観光客を呼び込みたいだろうし天候も回復して、月末再開された。この時期を狙ってZipp202を装着したOnixで白根･万座アタックを目論んでいた私としては幸いな展開となったのだが、先週の65kmとその後の50km走で痛めてしまったのが、元々登山や長距離走で常に時限爆弾みたいな存在の右膝と来た。仕方なくロードレーサーの持ち込みを諦め、手ぶらの温泉静養に草津に出掛けることになった。望むらくは紅葉でも愛でながら。

Originally planned to bring my Onix bike to attack Mt. Shirane (Tour de Kusatsu route) and Manza to enjoy the power of newly equipped Zipp202 wheels, but the mountain road was closed on October 26 because of snow. Lucky part of the story was the recovered weather enabled reopening the road in advance of 3-day holidays just before scheduled November 5 winter shutdown, but the problem was in my right knee that started aching after 65km and 50km runs I did in the previous week. I had no choice but leave my bike behind and focus on purely curing/relaxing in the hot spring.

今回は軽井沢経由で行くことにして、途中星野リゾートのハルニレテラスで昼食休憩。軽井沢は紅葉狩りの散策には悪くないところで、大賀ホールの通りや千ヶ滝など見所は点在する。ただその先の吾妻川から草津温泉までのエリアにはあまり見所がなくて、紅葉を求めるなら日光方面ということになるだろう。

I went to Kusatsu via Karuizawa this time. I had a lunch break on the way at Harunire Terrasse of Hoshino Resort. Actually, Karuizawa is nice to enjoy autumn leaves as they have quite few spots such as the street in front of Ohga Hall and Chigataki area. On the other hand, further beyond from River Agatsuma to Kusatsu, the autumnal colors are not so impressive, and thus it is usually suggested to visit Nikko instead.

31日、草津温泉での逗留を終え、万座温泉への移動は再開した白根山（ツール･ド･草津）ルートの草津志賀道路を通る。この日は道路工事で片道車線規制が多く、ペダルを踏む者にとってはこういうのはストレスなので自転車じゃなくて良かったと思った。紅葉の方は残念ながら標高2000m級の白根ルートから1800mの万座周辺の山は既に丸裸の木ばかりで、これらの多くは多分ダケカンバだと思うが、既に秋は終わっている感じだった。

On Oct 31, we moved from Kusatsu Onsen to Manza Onsen through Kusatsu-Shiga Road that is my favorite bike climb route with great views. From Shirane (2000m high) to Manza (1800m high), the trees were bare in neighboring mountains that indicated the autumn was gone already.

 万座では10数年ぶりに老舗の日進館に投宿した。新館の部屋は今風に使い勝手は良く、ツインベッドのスペースにはウォークイン･クローゼットがあり、部屋の一方は蹴上がりの畳スペースとなっている。新館内の万天の湯というのも今回が初めてだ。前回「万座温泉ホテル」と称していた時は部屋まで女将が挨拶に来たし、食事では黒米など興味深い地元食材などを上手く提示して好印象だったが、今回はそうした流れは継承しているようでも特長としては薄まってしまった印象を持った。もちろんお湯の質は極めて良いのだが、このレベルで15,000円近い料金はちょっと納得できないかな。食事で一番良かったのは朝食の自家製ヨーグルト、これは昔と変わらず抜群の美味しさといって良いだろう。

We lodged at Nisshinkan that we had stayed almost 2 decades ago last time. Our room in the new building was laid out modern with a walk-in closet by twin beds and the other end of the room had a stepped-up tatami-mat space with a table. Last time, this inn was called Manza Onsen Hotel and we were greeted with the lady landlord. We were also quite impressed with the ingredients of the meals. While such traditions seem maintained, its density appeared to be shrinking, and the rate 15,000 Yen/night/person (with dinner and breakfast) for the service in this grade looked to me a bit over-priced, admitting the hot spring quality is excellent. The best in the meals was their home-made yogurt that exceptionally good maintaining the quality for 2 decades.

日進館周辺には源泉の湯畑や熊四郎洞窟を巡る遊歩道が整備されていて、さらに急坂を進めば目の前の熊四郎山に登れるし、山田峠に至るハイキングも可能だ。

From Nisshinkan are promenades around Yubatake, the source of hot spring, and Kumashiro’s Cave. You can further climb the steep path to Mt. Kumashiro just in front, or have a long hiking to Yamada Pass.
