Okinawa occupation mentally

The speech of US State Department official to students has boiled up as a serious concern here. Kevin Maher is the head of the Japanese affairs office who speaks fluent Japanese and has a Japanese wife. Briefly, he reportedly said “Okinawans are masters of manipulation and extortion, and they are too lazy to grow goya vegetable.” This may be an evidence of their mindset still occupying Okinawa after the war. Our JDP Cabinet, being foreign affairs amateur, protested to US Ambassador John Roos over the phone when the Ambassador made an inquiry call. Always reactive... If in China, they would surely call up to bring Japanese Ambassador Niwa in the midnight.

When it comes to Okinawa and foreign affairs in Japan, professor Kei Wakaizumi comes up in my mind who acted as secret negotiator of Prime Minister Sato and dealt with Kissinger in the background focusing on Okinawa’s reversion in 1972. The hidden precise details are revealed in his book “The Best Course Available”. I guess I am not the only one who think the international negotiations won’t move forward without such determination and confidence as he maintained. It is interesting to see the author enjoyed a sense of resonance to two scholars of English literature, Yoshio Nakano and Tsuneari Fukuda on their views over foreign diplomacy in the book:
“Nothing is as dreadful as documentation of foreign affairs. It may sound slightly exaggerated, but an instant of negligence cannot be tolerated. The most dangerous is to promote a sweet dream of possibly receivable good intensions to the mind of our people.”
“Democracy is the system of government to disclose trivial sort of things in order to hide the most important issues.”

iPhone and GPS - DIY GPSというアプリ

I thought of getting Garmin Oregon 450 GPS trail navigator when I visited Canada last December, but I ended up buying a Xootr scooter and had to give up the first idea. I then thought the similar function might be obtained with iPhone’s GPS. An application called DIY GPS can use variety of maps, even copies from guidebooks (latitude/longitude data are relatively easy to get today), and you can see where you are by only relying on GPS in mountains with no 3G signal. So I downloaded this clever Japanese application from iTunes Store for 450 Yen.

As for the maps, Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI) offers various maps in their site “Watchizu” (if not Google), and Kashmir 3D is the PC application to slice them into a page of KMZ file copy (compatible to Garmin). As I am a Mac user, I used the trial version of Crossover to run Kashmir on the Mac platform. Its installation was rather slow but the actual function was reasonable. The file transfer from PC/Mac to iPhone can be conveniently handled using Dropbox. First, you have to download it on your PC or Mac and proceed the registration, then you can select the files. Next is the download of iPhone application and you log on as a registered user. The rest is very simple and straightforward.

Now I should be able to open the map in KMZ file format on DIY GPS. But nothing shows up... I tried another approach using JPG file in iPhone’s Camera Roll list, but DIY GPS does not seem locating it. My repeated efforts did not succeed and I gave up in the end. It was 12 o’clock midnight when I sent a mail to Mr. Matsumoto, the developer, for help. In less than an hour, a reply came. The point he made clear was that the application must not be turned on when processing the map file. On multitasking iPhone/iPad, the applications, once opened, will stay on in the background. Following his instructions, all the problems were solved entirely. I was totally impressed with this accurate and speedy support of application.

To be a young and worthy person -

According to Nikkei (yesterday’s evening paper), Japan Youth Research Institute made a survey of the young people to find how they think about themselves in four countries. As a result, Japanese high-school boys and girls are very negative in contrast to other countries: Korea, China and USA. The stumbling economy seems a part of its cause as their hope for the future gets very slim according to the Institute.
“The virtue of being humble” has always been Japanese maxim, and we tend not to be the nail that sticks out. But I think more serious than this culture is the lack of self-confidence. For example, 86.7% of Japanese girls are not happy with their physical body style. I won’t say that we should be as optimistic as Americans, but our education is responsible for turning our children into more positive thinker. The summary of this survey is available in Japanese in the following:

Pneumonia -

Having kept coughing for a week or so, the chorus exercise on Saturday was not comfortable and the fever rose up in the evening. I went to the hospital first in this week and the result was pneumonia again. Though it was in the opposite lung this time, the doctor said it was unusual to have pneumonia so repeatedly in the age of 60’s questioning my work load and alimentation status. I am receiving the treatment of intravenous drip injection of antibiotics and nutrition liquid for 3 days.

Gareth Malone Goes to Glyndebourne

Gareth Malone who organized the Choir now challenges an opera. He auditions boys and girls in towns who are in the totally indifferent environment from opera and forms the youth chorus for newly composed opera in Glyndebourne "Knight Crew". This BBC documentary program is on the air from Monday through Wednesday here this week. It is so interesting and cannot be missed. In case you missed it though, a much shorter summary video of about 11 minutes is available in Glyndebourne site.

Sonicare -

We use Sonicare toothbrush for more than a decade at home. The very first we bought was Braun because Sonicare was rather expensive, but one day in San Francisco, I came across with its sale at Macy’s, and when I brought it back home, the effect of brushing was totally amazing, and we continue to stick with Sonicare ever since.
Earlier this week I was in Akihabara to find at Yodobashi Camera a good deal of Sonicare’s elementary model HX6511. I had to buy replacement brushes for the older model that was two times more expensive and I could buy a new model for 3 brushes. So I got this, and at home, it had to be charged. It was not fully charged a day later, which was a bit strange, and I used it once in between, but following the instructions I plugged the mains out to avoid excessive charging. Then a few hours later, the product stopped responding to the touches on the switch and in addition on the charger it continued beeping for hours. I had to bring it back to Yodobashi because its behavior seemed totally erroneous.
Out of the bag at Yodobashi, this product behaved cool with no problem, Damm it! The staff was very cooperative and he checked my explanation with the manufacturer who said never encountered with such a case... Still the staff said to me it would be better to replace the product in this situation. The replacement operated out of the box as it was pre-charged, which was a different behavior. While filling the documentation, the troubled product was sitting on the desk and suddenly it started operating by itself, and the staff was surprised to see it, telling me something was wrong with it!
Sonicare’s new version, when it came out a few years ago, had many malfunction troubles due to a component failure but it is stable now according to him.

Gergiev in LSO Live

The LSO Live Series with Valery Gergiev is available in SACD, and I bought Ravel album. The main feature of this disc is Daphnis et Chloé that I seldom listen to, but my favorite Pavane and Boléro are also in it.
The recording was made at the Barbican, London in 2009, and my first impression was the spaciousness of the hall tone that was most comfortable. The soundstage itself was not so off-miking but the acoustics of the entire space was always there. The chorus [track 6] spans very wide localizing even to far back sides, and it indicates the surround channels are very active.
The performance is mature and calm all the way. The tonality did not sound sparklingly colorful while variety of tones are precisely presented, and it is probably due to the overall hall-tone. With this character, I guess next to try with interest would be Mahler’s Symphony No. 6.

Kusatsu in Winter -

Mozart’s Requiem concert (with Landon Edition) was well done today. Icho Hall in Hachioji was quite comfortable to sing. The level of our performance was something we have never attained before, and I am now in full of happy feeling. The soloists commented that the concert was amazing and far superior to the rehearsal in the morning. As we kept improving in the last stage, it would have been even better if the project itself had longer duration. I am very interested to hear the recording again carefully, but the delivery of CD is expected several months later. Many members who came from outside of the university also sing in some other choir, and they will go back to where they belong. As for me, I will start concentrating on Bach’s cantatas in a week.

The worry is now reality. The New York Times reported yesterday that Sony e-book reader application for iPhone/iPad was rejected (unlike the Kindle’s case) by Apple because it relied the content purchases on the framework outside Apple’s own store. Apple smartly says they are not monopolizing but just demanding the content availability in parallel, and this is how Apple tries to secure the share in the platform business namely devices, apps and contents altogether. It sounds as if Apple demands the toner ink availability in their store if one wants to sell a printer there, following the same logic.
I don’t think it is the right attitude for a platform to control contents using application as hostage, and their 30% charge from the transaction looks rather aggressive to begin with.

ZAC has Luck –

I said earlier that it was difficult for Japan to remain, but our team magically won the Asian Cup championship for the fourth time. The excitement was in its peak around 3 a.m. here! For Socceroos, the game was within their hand for the most part, but the result was against them regretfully. Japan players could not move much making too many small mistakes, and the loss of Kagawa was apparently significant.
I was shouting in front of the TV to “bring in Iwamasa!” and “replace with Lee!”, and Zaccheroni literally managed it cool and adequate. He will surely be one of my favorite managers along with Bengel and Osim. It has never been the case that the players who joined the game later as replacement continue bringing vital results in Japan national team, and the fact that Zac so far has not lost a single game since he came to Japan may indicate some kind of luck with him.

Headphones to fit your ears –

I intended to continue using my Ulitmate Ears 170vi earphones for the new iPhone, but the remote functions were totally unstable (while fully functional with iPod Touch), and it made me consider an alternative. I found in Apple Store the feature of a product, Ethymotic hf3, was different in US and Japan. The US headline says “optional custom earmolds”.

According to Ethymotic’s site, you will visit a specified audiologist to have the silicon molds of your ear holes that are sent to the manufacturer and later your custom mold pieces are delivered to you. The cost is about $100. It sounds like a similar process of taking the mold of your teeth at dentist.

Such a technology for ultimate fitting seems a hot topic of canal-type earphones right now as several manufacturers offer the same option, and I came across with a website reporting very favorable listening test for such products. I guess this started for professional musicians on stage originally.

In Japan, similar service does exist, but products are limited to very expensive niche ones, thus purely remains as an extremity. There is another non-custom approach with Sony: Their high-end earphones have earpieces with the structure of 2 types of silicon, hard inside and soft outside, and urethane foam is filled in them to realize relatively free transformation in your ears. Unfortunately, Sony lines up only cheap products with integrated microphone for mobiles, so they are out of my context.

Headphones for portable music listening have evolved last 2 decades with the boom of “EAR” type products and recently with a major shift to canal-type products. It appears to be another step forward for better fitting to the ears with improved noise isolation.

iPhone 4

I replaced my mobile to iPhone 4 from a smart phone that I had used last 2 years. Its QWERT keyboard was actually the pain because I am a user of rather minor Japanese kana keyboard, so I was really looking forward to the new iPhone. From now I don’t need my iPod any more, and I might be able to get rid of my iPad for even simpler life.
I put a non-glare film for display protection first of all, and now look into the numerous cases to choose: I am inclined to get an Incase Snap hardshell despite its relatively high price.

The first trouble I encountered was the earphones, and I will write about it separately. The next was Address Book. The individual data lined up properly in the application itself but when I accessed from the phone call screen for a search, they line up in the order of names instead of surnames. It looked hopeless but I entered in the Settings to change the order of "surname>name" and reset it back again, then this problem went away though I was not 100% happy as I didn’t understand why. I installed a utility application called Connexions that allowed creating group folders for Address Book, which is a must-have for me.

The third is Mail. The behavior seems different between Apple’s Mobile Me mails and other server’s mails, and I still don’t understand the mechanism. For example, when I try to delete some mails, a caution pops up telling “the mails cannot be moved to the trash”, and yet the mails disappear from the inbox. Also, I had an impression that iPhone’s inbox is affected by how I clean up mails on my home Mac, but I have to carefully monitor its behavior further.

As for the battery life, it of course depends on how much I use the phone, but the recharging once in every 2 days seems needed under the condition with minimal uses.

Haskil, Gould, Menuhin from Membran –

I saw in HMV site that the label called Membran released enormous collection of historic recordings for surprisingly bargain prices, and was interested in Clara Haskil’s Bach. I actually ordered 3 box sets including Glenn Gould and Yehudi Menuhin. Each 10 CD box set sells for only 1132 Yen. Now is an amazing time for old listeners!

Gould’s box include Goldberg Variations recorded by CBC in 1954, one year before he made the phenomenal debut recording for CBS in 1955, and I had heard of the recording with a great interest. This performance was not as sparkling as 55’s while it hinted his development to follow. Gould played Goldberg in 42 minutes 29 seconds here in contrast to 38 minutes 20 seconds in the 1955 album. The recording quality is a bit annoying with some distortion that sounded as if the master was a vinyl disc rather than a tape. 1955 performance was actually included in the second disc of this box, so I made a comparison to the genuine CD ablum released by CBS. The sound was apparently different. Membran version was slightly louder in volume and also had more bass in regard with the tonal balance. The box had no information regarding Membran itself or the sound sources, and I could only vaguely find in the website that they are a German book publishing company and that the music and the video were claimed to have cleared the license.

Upon the delivery, I first listened to Haskil’s Bach. The F-minor concerto BWV1056 was conducted by Pablo Casals but the recording was not quite telerable unfortunately. C-major concerto for 2 klaviers BWV1061 was with Geza Anda, and I enjoyed this performance very much.

The first CD of Menuhin’s box was also Bach, D-minor concerto BWV1043, and the partner violinist was Gioconda de Vito. This gorgeous coupling was actually the reason why I put this box in the shopping cart. The performance itself was a kind of relaxed Bach before the movement of reconstructing Baroque music came, I would say. The box also included violin sonatas No. 3, No. 4 and Chaconne, and they were the music even after more than 60 years that draws us direct into Bach’s world.
I have just picked Bach to listen first, and have no idea how soon I would finish the total 30 discs.

Listening to Mozart's Requiem -

I went to the chorus training this morning, and was tied up entirely in the afternoon with the joint lesson with the orchestra. We have only 2 more lessons with the orchestra scheduled including the rehearsal, but it looks like we still have few things to be addressed.

Mozart composed only 3 works of church music while he lived in Vienna: C-minor mass K. 427, Ave Verum Corpus K. 618 and Requiem K. 626. Except the small piece of K. 618, the other two were both incomplete but still shine as unsurpassable masterpieces.
Well then, which performance would be suggested for Requiem in records? The options are numerous, and everyone has a different answer. I bought an album by Harnoncourt with Concentus Musicus Wien last year, and one of the reasons was because it was an SACD disc with surround mix. Their performance was dependable, and particularly impressive among solid and brisk music they create throughout was Hostias that flew unexpectedly fast as if it sounded like a waltz that danced so lightly. Our Hostias as we sing in the choir now, Mr. Kimura the conductor pushes us with the tempo as fast as Harnoncourt interestingly.

I was lucky in January 2006 to coincide in San Francisco when Sir Gardiner and Monteverdi Choir made a US tour visiting Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York. I definitely went to the concert when they played C-minor mass and Requiem in one night. The music was so moving and it was truly a special moment for me. The picture shown is Davies Hall on the day.
Digressing the subject, Gardiner has a live concert DVD of Requiem at Palau Catalana in Barcelona, an amazingly beautiful hall that took my breath away once. Unfortunately, the DVD’s picture quality does not convey the quality of its beauty even vaguely.

Japan Suffers in Asian Cup Soccer

The match with Syria was rather rough [2 PK’s and our goalkeeper sent-off]. In the first half, Japan showed some improvement in fasters passes and vertical attacks as Zaccheroni had stressed. The goal was the result of chained actions of Honda’s aggressive dribble, Kagawa’s edgy flip, Matsui’s soft placement of the ball and skillful body control to obstruct the defender, and Hasebe’s determination. Everybody moved in ensemble. Syria’s checks might be less pressuring than Jordan’s, but the game was interesting with repeated attacks each other.
In the second half, the troubles seemed the consequence of the recessed mind for aggressiveness, or was it just fatigue to cease running? Kagawa and Endo did not look doing well in the game, and if these two players in particular play merely ordinary, the chance is slim for Japan to make the match in good shape. Watching the 2 matches so far against lower-ranked teams, with more suffers than marvels, it would be difficult for Japan to remain through the final tournament.
Also, several players got a yellow card and if they get another in the next match with Saudi, they cannot play the first match of the final tournament, which worries me.

Breeding Tuna through Mackerel –

In NHK’s program “Life Dramatic”was reported a successful experiment of surrogate birth across fish. A university study team transplanted trout’s spermatogonia to baby fish of yamame, and proved that the trout was born from them. Furthermore, the spermatogonia when transplanted to female yamame converted themselves to ova. This whole study is indeed an amazing discovery. The real goal of the study is to have mackerel breed tuna, an endangered species to extinct, and some outcome will be expected in a year. The commentator said it was the responsibility of Japanese that kept consuming tuna the most in the world.

VIVAT LEO!

This was a superb record for the start of the new year. Only few people would be interested in renaissance music, but I came across with the new release information of Joshua Rifkin in late December. And it was an SACD as an extra benefit. Amazon did not carry it, but HMV had a scheduled import, so I immediately placed an order.
Leo X is the pope came from the Medicis who brought the Vatican to a financial disaster while he was know for his extensive protection of arts and artists. This disc consists of motets composed in his day and mostly for him. Capella Pratensis is a group formed to focus on Josquin Desprez’s music originally, and this was the first time for me to listen to them. The chorus was very refined, and I can feel the approach of Joshua Rifkin to aim ultimately precise singing technically and musically in order to express the essence of music, whether it is Bach or renaissance music like this.
The recording is super, too. The voices are very real with utmost clarity and the surround channels subtly pick reverberant elements to contribute in the sense of depth in the front-back axis.

Because the Sea is Our Mother

+

I was thinking of something new to do this year, and I just happened to imagine taking underwater photos as it sounds like an exciting adventure and also the opportunity to be in the very spot to sense the phenomenal transition of global environment. One of my old colleagues is long-time scuba diver, and he could be my elementary instructor. On the other hand, as I cruise the Internet, many photographers post such pictures, and it looks totally impossible for me to reach their level. For example, Jun Fukui shows beautiful macro photos under the sea around Okinawa.
I have Canon S90, a compact digital camera (beside my SLR), and I checked if it had any underwater accessories. I found a waterproof case valid as deep as 40 meters for S95, the successor model introduced last year. The size is identical but the button layout is slightly different each other, therefore it won’t fit with S90 unfortunately. The picture shown here above is a wallpaper downloaded from National Geographic site.

Turn Over a New Page -

A Happy New Year!
Last year, I had lots of active events and all went well through the midnight of Christmas Eve until one exception that followed immediately afterward: I woke up with a very high fever on 25th, and I was told on Monday that I had pneumonia. The fever dropped to normal on 29th, thanks to antibiotic medicine, but I sense the subtle inflammation in the right lung still remains. The chorus exercise starts coming weekend, and I am by no means ready to breathe in full yet. A moment of ordeal…
I hope to filter the activities this year with more focuses, and in parallel the frequency of my blog uploads might be affected steering toward more selective topics. In any case, I look forward to your continued supports.
