In my home we have been using Microsoft Money as our book-keeping application, and because we are always in Mac environment it had go through Parallel Desktop Windows. When Money was introduced some 10 years ago, it really appeared cool, but Microsoft discontinued its supports (I guess last year), and thus Bill Gates’ original attempt to morph the company into the financial world’s giant failed to make it.
Such being the situation, I suggested my wife to switch the app to something under Mac OS, and of course I did not forget offering her an incentive replacing her suffering and old iMac hardware with the newest Mac mini. The display of her iMac looked disastrous with several vertical lines permanently on the screen.

I had two fundamental requirements for the accounting application: A) Easy management of assets and B) Enabling entries of variety of currencies, then the choices looked limited and I finally came across with relatively well-reputed iCompta 4. The major drawback of this app is that it is not localized for Japanese and its menu and everything is in English. I used to use Intuit’s app in my company myself and in our case this would be considered manageable. In quickly testing it, I found that data entries as well as categories accepted Japanese, its framework was simple, comprehensive and could be structured to suit your needs. On the other hand, I did not find any features for analysis and reporting, therefore if you are in a business even small one, it would be highly the case that this won’t work for you.

I opened the contents of iCompta and found a file titled “localizable.strings” in English-related folder under Resource that I replaced some accounting terminologies with Japanese translations. Then such sub-level options as “frequency” or “mean of payment” tab on screen successfully displayed Japanese. Next hurdle was the data transfer from Money to iCompta. Money does not output the entire data in CSV, while the import in iCompta side was not fully automatic, so it required large portion of data such as customized categories and asset status to be manually re-entered. When everything was set in order, fully in sync with Money, my wife’s immediate reaction was to complain that it had no procedures to show the expenditure status in category-by-category combining relevant accounts. I studied it a bit and found that once we set a budget, its page can display the current status. I myself am quite happy with this app as I can also use mobile version with my iPhone, but the whole thing depends on how my partner feels with its functionality in the end.

Viewing Mt. Fuji -

Awakening dark in the morning around 4, I instantaneously decided an action: Go to a place with the entire view of New Year’s Mt. Fuji and take its pictures. So I managed to catch the first train at Kamakura (leaving at 5:15) and made transfers at Yokohama, Higashi-Kanagawa, Hachioji, Takao and Ohtsuki, ending up at Lake Kawaguchiko where Mount Tenjo is a handy vista point.

Most visitors take Kachi-kachi ropeway which is a short cut, but my plan was climbing and found the entry path to the hiking course just before the ropeway station. It was a trail steadily gaining the altitude and you would feel like a long hike although it was about 30 minutes of climbing.

I started taking pictures at 10, but the backfiring sunbeam was more intense already and I thought I should have promptly arrived here via ropeway to capture the clearer views of the early morning.
Going home, I took the highway bus conveniently and directly headed to Yokohama. Running to the east, the clouds gathered in the east side of Mt. Fuji and also above us were thicker clouds in Gotenba area.

Tsujii at Carnegie –

There was a TV program on the New Year’s Day reporting Nobuyuki Tsujii’s last fall concert at Carnegie Hall that I had set recording, and I had relaxed time to watch it today. Beethoven’s Tempest sonata was superb. I think I should get the CD that covers the entire concert.

Le Premier Soleil de 2012 -

Merry Christmas!

Lighting up Tokyo Sky Tree this evening for Christmas!

December 23 at Ogikubo Church. A small church to contain perhaps less than 100 visitors, and the concert was Bach’s Christmas Oratorio by Tokyo Baroque Scolars with organ accompanied. The highlight of the day was probably Mr. Hiroshi Miura, the conductor who handled narrations for himself with his beautiful voice, and it greatly helped the realization of dramatic progress of the story in music. He must have been associated in stage performances elsewhere.
The soloists as well as the evangelist were picked from the choir members, and the bass was good among them. Singing those difficult pieces is a high challenge definitely as the soloists are required to carry different set of skills. The choir as a whole may not have a remarkable ability of singing, but their timbre was well matched to achieve uniformity.
The seats were already filled as the premise opened, and then after 30 minutes, about 60 choir singers were filled in front of the audience. Where I sat was only 2-3 meters from the bass, and I wished to be seated with better balance of parts.

Ensemble Rococo – 25

December 21 at Tokyo Bunka-Kaikan small hall. Many listeners gathered to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Ensemble Rococo’s Christmas Concert. The group consists of Mr. and Mrs. Shintani (flute and cembalo), Mr. Obata (oboe) and Mr. Kikuchi (cello), and they create precisely harmonious and top quality baroque music. Their instruments are indeed the core of Bach music, and by adding necessary strings and also a soprano (for BWV202 cantata) this time, the program was very pleasing.

Particularly impressive was cello partly because my focus recently tends to be swayed by the basso continuo. They are the pace-maker of Bach’s music with the absolute tempo under their control to begin with, and while letting the main melody by violins dance around on the surface, the basso independently weaves its own beauty of counterpoints in parallel, which makes the cellist inevitably feel privileged. In that sense, Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in the evening was superb, and even further brilliant was Trio Sonata G-major BWV525 that they played in the end of the program.

Serious Scars in My Bike –

For only 15 or 20 minutes of parking for a quick shopping in town, I got my bike scarred deep in the crank. Villains! Japan is generally safe but not 100%, and the reality of life is as such. My special bike might be stolen next time if I am unfortunate again.

David Villa Injured –

Toyota Cup semi-final game was exceptionally quiet as Barca enchanted the entire stadium with the beauty of their plays. Most unfortunate was Villa who broke his left leg in the game.

Run for Full View of Mt. Fuji

I woke up in the morning and felt as if my entire body was filled with huge fatigue. I ran yesterday 68km along the Shonan coastline including Shonan Village, Misaki harbor and Miura beach with a friend of mine. Originally our plan was a hill climb in the northern pass of Tokyo, but the weather went into the complete winter last few days, with some snow and possibly frozen roads, so we decided to avoid risking ourselves. Minura Peninsula was warm and the Route 215 from Misaki to Tsurugizaki was so comfortable to run and offered plenty of nice views.
We also enjoyed clear and white Mt. Fuji yesterday, and I thought of even wider view of it to capture along with a finer tuning of RD-7900 derailleur, so I tried to compress my dullness and ran out of home around 11 a.m. heading for somewhere near Hiratsuka of Tomei expressway. It shouldn’t be exhausting since the distance is 25km or so.
The route I took was good for bikes mostly, although bike riding is not generally safe in Japan: I took Route 32 from Hase, Kamakura to Fujisawa, then went to the north exit of the station. From there to Tsujido was a straight line of road in parallel with the railway. I then took north up to Shin-Shonan Bypass. There was an underway beneath the Bypass. At Chigasaki Chuo, the Bypass splits and by that time Mt. Fuji can be seen in front and larger. I simply kept heading west watching the mountain and ended up with Okazaki Ohashi bridge. As I was already content with the view there, I took a short break at Seven Eleven store a few hundred meters ahead. The rest, I went down south to the coast and accelerated my pedals on Route 134 back home.

Multi-Ferrari's Crash –

Sunday, 4th of December, 8 Ferrari, 1 Lamborghini, and 3 Mercedez sports cars crashed in Chugoku Express Way, Japan, perhaps the priciest car accident ever. They were all a tour team cruising for Kyushu and the one on top hit the center wall to bounce against the second car, involving all the rest following them. Well, that’s their fault.

Saving Fares with Stops -

I travel from Zushi to Okubo every weekend for chorus training, and the train fare over 2,000 Yen back and forth is not cheap. The other day, I had to get off at Yokohama on my way and found the total fare was eventually cheaper. This same approach might be applicable for those visiting Kamakura from Tokyo area to save some coins by a stop at Yokohama. Well, if I take Tokyu Line between Yokohama and Shibuya, I know its even cheaper but I am a bit lazy to constantly use this route.

Mt. Kawanori

My legs suffer from mussle ache today because I climbed Mt. Kawanori yesterday. The weather was perfect but the recent typhoon No. 15 damaged the trails here and there, and we reconsidered our route and eventually took the route in the middle instead of the originally intended right route. Still, it had a detour and we somehow lost the course and climbed the middle of nowhere for a while. I think I did much bette than a yeaar ago when I went to Mt. Sobatsubuyama.
Mt. Kawanori is one of very popular mountains near Tokyo because you can have 360- degree view from the summit. Also, Mt. Fuji can be seen close and clear from here.

George Harrison -

Have you seen this movie? It’s being shown here for the limited period of two weeks. I thought of going (2500 Yen admission), but realized that the Blu-ray was going to be released in December, so I rather wait and watch it on my home screen.

After nine in the evening last evening, I saw the movie “Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould”, a documentary film gathering various archival pieces some of which I had seen elsewhere. Several close friends were featured in this film being interviewed to tell the life of Glenn, and they seemed all precious documentation for understanding the subtle details of how Glenn lived his life. As I had just finished reading the book “A Romance on Three Legs”, it helped me to better understand the stories because there were overlaps of topics in them.
The most impressive in the film was regarding “detachment” in playing piano that an old lady explained who took Guerrero’s lessons with Glenn, and she played a phrase of Bach with clear articulations that was almost like Glenn, and then the scene transferred seamlessly to the performance of Glenn’s himself.

Romance on Three Legs

This was the story of a piano rather than the pianist, namely Steinway CD-318 that Glenn Gould obsessively loved. Many people show up on the stage around the instrument. For example, Capter 2 was about a tuner, Verne Edquist who will be later close to Glenn. For Gould to be Gould in full, such elements as the rarely precious instrument and staff had to be there behind him, and this concept repeats throughout the book like a motif in music.
Glenn once recorded Handel’s sonatas playing harpsichord, and it was because CD-318 was seriously damaged by mishandling during its shipment from Cleveland to Toronto and eventually stayed in Steinway for repair for a year. Steinway’s business stance is another topic in the book, and Glenn’s requests being often outrageous, Steinway tended not to deal with them attentively, and consequently their relation got tense. Glenn in the end gave up searching equivalent alternative to CD-318 among other Steinway pianos and decided to buy a Yamaha concert grand that he used in his final recording of Goldberg Variations. Then how did CD-318 end up afterward?

I was curious to see what would pop out of Olympus as I had read the articles of FACTA magazine Aug and Oct issues that reported something burning behind the M&A's by this top brand corporate. And its outcome was just outrageous. At best they will be kicked out of stock listing, or the worst will be the dissolution like the case of Snow Brand.

TIME that reported details of former CEO Woodford’s dismissal concludes as follows in the most recent article regarding the scandal:
“But the Olympus scandal shows that local boardrooms can still be secretive, deceitful and perhaps even criminal. Those, alas, are still Japan's rules of capitalism. “

Autumn Colors -

As I watched the mountains in Kusatsu, I was a bit worried about the colors of the leaves that were mostly yellow and brown this year possibly because of the extraordinary climate to cause them wither before deepening their colors. Still, I found a few spots that took my breath away, and I show you three pictures here: Nature promenade of Tekunomori forrest, Water Lily's Pond near Hotel Village, and finally Karuizawa where red leaves were gorgeous, specifically Oga Avenue in this case.

Tsumagoi Panorama Line

For novice bike runner like myself, tours across mountain that exceed 50km in distance is a challenge but tempting at the same time, and this Panorama Line from Kusatus to Karuizawa seemed ideal because it contains very long downhill rides. I thought it should be manageable, but considering it consists of three uphill sections that amount 700m altitude gain in total, a careful preparation process is essential, so I did things like 4x uphill training of Shonan Village to gain >500m and 400m uphill run from Kusatsu to Shirane Ropeway Station in advance. This course is a sort of “petitfondo” in the best fall season.

Tsumagoi Panorama Line is ideal for cycling because the automobile traffic is scarce. The first uphill is some 160m in altitude gain, and a great view spreads in front once you start to descend.

The second long uphill section is from Osasa crossing on Route 144 up to the point where the road meets with Onioshi Highway. It will take about 30 minutes to go over this 6km distance and 200m altitude.
Kita-Karuizawa resort area looked almost deserted despite the weekend and the roads were not well maintained.

Finishing the third uphill section of about 300m to Minenochaya, the highlight of the course is the long and gorgeous downhill to Naka-Karuizawa. It is the same excitement as the downhill of mountain skiing, and as we descend into Karuizawa area the autumn leaves get so beautiful which is the bonus of this tour.

Run Data:
Distance 54.3km

Kusatsu→Panorama Line 30mins
→Panorama Line summit 30mins
→Osasa Crossing 25mins
→Onioshi Highway Crossing 30mins
→Minenochaya 70mins
→Naka-Karuizawa 45mins
→Karuizawa Station 15mins
