Yesterday’s concert was successfully over. I was really surprised to see that the premise, Yodobashi Church, was almost full with the audience. I had tried to arrange a few additional tickets for visiting friends the day before, and I was told to hold on because the on-site tickets were getting scarce.
The concert began with well-known Bach’s chamber music by Acroama Animata namely Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, Suite No. 2 and Harpsichord Concerto No. 3.
In the second part after the intermission, the soloist singers and our choir joined them to sing two cantatas. I think we managed to sing “Christ lag in Todesbanden” BWV4 in the fullest of our current ability, and the conductor Shigemi actually shook my hands later telling me “perfect!” On the other hand, “Ein Feste Burg ist Unser Gott” BWV80 truly required us a higher skill of singing in its first piece, and I felt frankly that our target to shoot still remained. We sang “Furusato” together with the audience in the encore with the thought for those who suffered in 3.11 disaster in northeast Japan, and there was a moment where a heart-moving sense filled the entire church.
One of the leaders of the orchestra, Aki Schmitt has a Japanese mother who seemed very much pleased to have realized their debut in Japan, and according to their schedule, they plan to have concert in Kyoto on the 23rd and in Naruto on the 24th.

For CAAD9, I use Shimano BR-5700 calipers, but frankly I am not happy with its braking responsiveness. That was one of reasons I wanted to try a different approach for Onix, and I thought of Campy’s Centaur because its black color matched with the frame and also it was less expensive than Shimano. Unfortunately, its reputation was not quite favorable, and I ended up investing in Planet-X ultra light CNC calipers. It weighs only 205 grams and it had a feel of the industrial design product, which was so tempting. Luckily they started a discount sale and in parallel the UK currency began dropping against Japanese Yen to push my back for the decision. The price was £66.66 with additional £24 for shipping.

Then I received a mail from Planet-X informing “dispatched”, and a few days later a Royal Mail parcel arrived. Opening it, came out a package of SRAM RIVAL derailleur which was mindboggling. The content was actually the calipers that I ordered and I felt this kind of arrangement was quite practically opportunistic.

I thought of ordering the gun-metal color version but it was out of stock and I decided the alternative black version. The product really had the appeal of handcraft metal carving and its hairline surface finish was sexy. And furthermore, the calipers had the Swisstop brake pads!

Acroama Animata

We had a rehearsal this evening with Acroama Animata, a German chamber orchestra of the youth. We sing Bach's cantatas No. 4 and No. 80, but I felt rather miserable. In the large church, I could not hear much of other choir parts in harmony and I was singing without confidence regarding how my voice could fit well in this particular space. Also I could not follow the conductor's tact well in a critical passage. The concert is in the afternoon tomorrow, and I can hopefully eliminate my anxiety in the Generalprobe in the morning.

Shonan Village

I ran to Shonan Village as a more training-oriented route than the previous promenade around Kita-Kamakura. Reviewing today’s data, the total running distance was 23.15km and the average speed was 18.63km/h. According to Route Labo map, the uphill for the village has roughly 150m in altitude with the average inclination of 5.4%. It is by no means a long slope, and the good feature is the low traffic of cars. Also the sidewalk way is wide enough and you can take it with no worries about the vehicles. This is probably ideal for repeating the hillclimb exercises twice or thrice. I took the downhill route toward Akiya and passing through the tunnel, the beach was suddenly in front of me and I enjoyed a high-speed running along the Route 134. The picture of the beach is Chojagasaki with a slight view of Mt. Fuji.

Orbea Onix

The frame I obtained next to CAAD9 is Orbea Onix. Orbea is one of the largest bicycle manufacturers in Spain, and its flagship model, Orca, is the winner in Beijing Olympics and its beautiful shape of form attracts many Japanese fans. As for me, since I mentally cannot eliminate the behavior under poverty, I seldom reach top-of-the-line models, and again in this case, I ended up with the sister model called Onix. In contrast to CAAD9’s modern yet bigger American body, Orbea’s smallish España body emits the scent of Europe, and black-orange Onix 2008 frame carries more human sexiness than mere mechanism.
For a full-carbon frame, Onix actually weighs 50grams more that aluminum CAAD9, but this heavy body contributes in the highly steady drivability coupled with the excellent responsiveness, and is very favorably reputed especially for longer rides. Onix executed a full model change in 2009 to be transferred to their China factory, therefore the 2008 model was the last product version of Spain-made carbon frame.

In order to build a road racer around this frame, I intended to remove the components from CAAD9 bicycle, but the reason why I obtained some Shimano 5600 parts (shifters) was because I wanted have two bicycles in workable form as soon as possible within the limitation of the budget. On the other hand, my real wish is to finish Onix rich with European flavor as much as possible, and I am not sure if I can keep avoiding Campagnolo. Attached above is the list of components for two bikes under the current planning.

I’ve got another Campagnolo before selling off Shimano’s 105 normal crank set. I encountered with a Centaur compact aluminum set for only a grand (10k Yen), and I concluded that it was ultimate for my Cannondale.
This decision raised a slight concern though: The carbon chain-wheel in black-color was ideal matching with the carbon folk to form a tight and intrepid appeal of my bicycle contrasting CAAD9 aluminum body. The new aluminum crank actually steers it to the opposite direction resonating with the glossy CAAD9 color. I thought I had to live with it anyway because there would be little to do.
An unexpected progress was the bonus of continued cruising on the net as I found Fulcrum’s compact chain rings the other day. These items were rather unusual, and both of 50T and 34T rings were available in black color, so I visited the shop to check them out. The components looked almost unused, and I immediately decided to buy them. Fulcrum models are equivalent to Campagnolo chain wheels, therefore they fitted in my crank as the perfect solution.

I plan collecting some more components to replace with those in the current CAAD9. Beyond the crank would be Shimano 5600 series derailleurs and shifters, eventually a slight downgrade but maintaining the fundamental performance level. The removed components will be for the second body that now occupies my mind as the affair with Cannondale is over.

Morning Promenade

Route 134 is jammed already around 7 o’clock here and there and thus not very convenient for bicycle running. So I came up with anther route for morning promenade without much traffic. I start from Kotsubo harbor in Zushi, take Route 311 for Hase Temple, take north up to Koban-mae signal. Turning to right, the road starts rising slightly and is followed by an uphill of some 70m going up to Yamanouchi Reservoir that is perfect for a short exercise. The reward is the refreshing downhill to Kita-Kamakura. I take the return route passing through the front gate of Tsurugaoka-Hachiman Shrine and then the straight pass of Omachi. The total distance is about 15km and I can cover it within an hour.

Kusatsu Shirane Bike Tour

I invited a friend of mine to a tour ride in Kusatsu area. We left Nerima at 6:30 yesterday morning and we were in Kusatsu at 9:30 because the traffic of Kan-etsu expressway was very smooth. My friend planned a hill-crimb following the course of Tour de Kusatsu, but my level was not that qualifiable and I originally considered running from Kusatsu to Tsumagoi instead. Unfortunately, I have just recovered from my sickness of almost a month that was found to be light pneumonia, and during this period of time, my mussle has almost gone, therefore I had to avoid sudden and excessive exercises. I packed my bicycle and went to the summit of Mt. Shirane by bus where I could wait for my friend’s arrival.
He was thinking of running further to Shibu-Toge Pass, the highest point in the route, and I joined him and then had a long downhill back to Kusatsu Onsen. The route offered impressive views here and there, and we could immediately understand why it was very popular among bike riders. The entire uphill of Tour de Kusatsu that looks extremely demanding may be more manageable than it appears because it always prepares a relieving flat section after some tough crimbing, and the end reward must be truly specical.

The next day, our plan was to have some short ride in Tsumagoi Panorama Line, but the rain forced us to give it up and we decided to go through the course by the car. The traffic of this road is scarce, which is ideal for bicycle tours. There was two big bridges over deep valleys and we went uphill for a while, then we found ourselves in the middle of huge cabbage fields with 360-degree open views. If the sky was clear, we might be able to see Mt. Asama in front and Mt. Shirane in back… The distance from Kusatsu to Ohmae was about 24km, and because the slope from Tsumagoi side was very steep, I would prefer running from Kusatsu side, generally going downhill and with wider valley views on the left while running.

I don't feel great these days...

While my body condition with a slight fever and coughing remained unimproved after the last 70km long run, the chorus training this morning was some “exercise” because the conductor proceeded with the real tempo for the concert which was fast, and there were only two tenors and the only partner of mine tended to rely on me to sing. So my fever went up a little in the afternoon.
I felt my body much relaxed as I had been to Hoya yesterday to have the body massage. I have been receiving the treatment occasionally for about a year by the masseuse who opened a facility in the residence, and it is a kind of relief to have someone who stores my physical situation in memory just like a trainer for athletes. This time, I was a bit surprises to find that the femurs and the buttocks still had the mussle fatigue caused by the long run. Additionally, the right joint of the waist was stiff. This indicated a few things to do before and after the running: One is a series of stretching for cool-down and another is balancing the amount to accumulate in the trainings for the targeted long run.

Kaieda Wept in Diet –

Facing with edgy questions by LDP repeatedly, Banri Kaieda Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry wept in Diet today displaying his mental fragility. Boys used to be taught in the old days never to show tears to others, and it was a tradition in Japan, or the culture with the sense of shame. (So shame on Kaieda.) I would say to him, “if you have time to cry, work more with it!”
We assume a Dietman to execute tough manipulation of politics, and in contrast with such a weak mind, how could Tepco or even the Ministry be governed? If he is already too stressed, he should resign before the Cabinet gives up because the worst possible scenario would be his suicide with dispair, and it may not necessarily trigger P.M. Kan’s resignation.

My friend came to help building the road racer last weekend, and we decided to use Centaur in the very first stage. The right Ultratorque BB cup came with a protection spring that needed to be insert and the cranks were installed requiring some concentration. Also joining the shaft from the left and the right was not easy because Ultratorque shaft did not have any extra length, but I think these procedures were done relatively smoothly.
The worst was the right STI lever of Shimano ST-5700. Installing the shift cable in place took well over 30 minutes and was almost reaching an hour. The instruction sheet was equally awful and its illustrations did not explain much about what to do. The only effort you can make is to insert the cable from the specified hole but it was unpredictable where it came out, and you keep trying forever… What I found in the end was that if I insert a cable from the assumed exit, it comes out on the visible surface before the input hole. A kind of reverse engineering. I left the dummy cable there, and inserted the shift cable from the input properly having it push the dummy back gradually. I finally succeeded in the cable installation!
The most impressive in the work was the lightness of cranks. When we put one of binding pedals that weighed 150 grams approximately, the crank started to role down by itself. The chain, the derailleur, and the cassette were all linked, and it showed how small the entire friction was. The ceramic bearings might be functioning a great deal for it.
As this Cannondale CAAD9 frame was a little too large for myself, the proper stem length was 70mm and I had to lower the hand bar for optimum driving position.
When all the work was finished, it was already after 17:00, and we decided to have a short test run to Hirouyama Park with a steep climbing road. The new 34/27T gear ratio was helping me, but I could not run as fast as my companion expert. The great bonus was the beautiful view of Mt. Fuji and Enoshima Island in the mist.

Ananlog TV Service Ceased in Japan

The analog television broadcast in Japan ceased its 55-year service yesterday noon, and each channel displayed the plain text of notice afterward. Scanning all commercial channels, this notice screen was quite shabby with only white characters on blue back while NHK used some more colors.

Running from Zushi to Nerima -

It was luckily cool today for July, and I decided to run my old bicycle from Zushi to Tokyo home in Nerima. My younger son volunteered to use it there, and I thought it good for me to exceed 50km with this exercise. The last run for almost 30-year old bicycle.
Originally, my thought was to leave Zushi at 6 in the morning that would ensure my arrival before noon, but I didn’t feel great this morning and woke up at 5:30. I ended up leaving home at 8 with an option to get back in mind if the wind was strong. Typhoon moved out further from Japan, but I could see its infulence with the wind against me from northeast. I still thought it was not too bothersome and I could manage it.
Gee, River Tamagawa was very far from Zushi. I imagined 3-hour ride but it exactly took 4 hours and it was 50km away. I got to the riverbank at noon, and had amino vital sport gel and two rice balls for quick lunch.
Then I took Kampachi (Loop 8) that was very comfortable with no ups and downs, and in only 45 minutes I arrived at Nishi-Ogikubo where I did not forget to buy some black-beans tea. The total distance was 69.1km and it took 309 minutes.
I was occupied in running and the photo taking was totally out of my mind, therefore this is the only one at the goal.

"Nadeshiko" the Champ -

At 3:30 in the morning, the large part of Japan was awake because of FIFA Women's final match. I had thought the chance of winning against US was rather slim, as much as say 20%, but I woke up to cheer like everybody else.
US played far better than Japan in any angle in the beginning, but we were lucky as the first half ended with no goals. It was indeed like a live lesson not to give up until the luck smiles to you. US goalkeeper Solo was taking time for her injury when the overtime left only 5 minutes, and it looked normal that 2-1 would be the end result in this situation, but the following corner-kick was magically redirected into the goal by Homare Sawa to even the score. Nadeshiko girls surely bring the brightest souvenir back home.

Gardening Coil Hose

We bought a 15-meter long coil hose for watering the garden. It provides 9 different patterns of water splash, and it makes my work more pleasant in the summer.

Isao Tomita's Tale of Genji

I attended a small, private listening session of “the Tale of Genji, Symphonic Fantasy” with the guidance of Isao Tomita himself in Sunday afternoon. The venue was the listening room of Sona in Nakano-Shinbashi, and the air was boilingly hot on the way. Sona is a company specialized in studio designs and actually my listening room was designed and built by them. Over a dozen people gathered were those who were involved in sound production, mostly sound engineers and some composers. I have not met Mr. Tomita for many years myself.

The most interesting part of this production is the intimacy of the Tale spoken in contemporary Kyoto language that is wrapped around by the spectacular surround sound, namely “Tomita World” through the blend of synthesizer and real orchestral sound.

Mr. Tomita showed us a few episodes between the tracks to demo as well as Q & A’s, and one of interesting comments was that he treated the narration exactly as a part of music instruments. Also mentioned was that the recent release of Planets remixed version was in 96k while this Tale of Genji was 48k but they should have been opposite considering the latter contained the orchestral recording. When he expressed his plan producing the new release in Surround, most Japanese labels showed their immediate reluctance, and it was really tough for him to have his project go through.

- Octalink is History?

I’ve got brand new FC-5502 Shimano 105 crank set. In those days was there only the normal crank, and the standard 53/39T rings work well in the general road running. I can now leave the Octalink BB sticking to the frame and fit the cranks to it, but I tried to push the wrench geared to the BB once again, and this time the ring moved slightly. It looked too late anyway but the following process of removal was quite smooth.
I bought a Taiwanese tool, LIFU 11B1 for this process that required a slim metal bar to rotate, but I could not find such a bar handy at home, and I borrowed Shimano TL-UN74 from my friend. This one used 300mm long monkey wrench and thus it could be hit hard by a hammer if wanted. 11B1’s feature was the additional compatibility with ISIS brackets and it would work efficiently if only the BB is not resistant.
This outcome was an unexpected headache to me because I had to think which to choose in front of 105 and Centaur compact set. I of course bought 105 additionally as I was determined, but if I expand my activity plan beyond flat road running toward long tour rides that would inevitably include some significant altitude gaining, the answer is almost obviously for Centaur. Unfortunately, the color matching of bronze Ultra torque BB Cup and aluminum CAAD9 frame looked rather unsophisticated.
Jitensha Parts COM finally reported me today that they managed to collect the ordered parts and the shipment would be expected toward tomorrow, and I can soon practically build my bicycle with the help of my friend, and I can discuss this matter with him then.

Octalink Binding Bracket

No particular progress seen in building my road racer so far. I made a complaint call to Jitensha Buhin Com and the manager Ishihara received it. He maintained his low profile and said his apologies repeatedly with regard to the shortage of Shimano component supplies, and then mentioned some positive comments such as having gone through another channel for procurement, my standing being the second in line now, the responsibility to follow this matter entirely on his own. Consequently, I failed to strictly remain as a difficult customer.

The replacement Deuter rucksack arrived from Wiggle in the morning of 29th. 3 days after my return shipment, I received their confirmation of the receipt and their processing by the following day, so I could expect how soon it would come back. Nothing to complain to this efficiency that took less than 10 days for the entire replacement process in overseas. This time the product, Deuter Race EXP Air, looked very sturdy and dependable.

I worked on removing the bottom bracket as I borrowed an Octalink tool from my friend, but the BB was completed locked with the frame and rejected to move even slightly. I repeated my hard work spraying CRC and hammering the wrench in vain. The rest might be bringing this to a bicycle shop…

The New Air-conditioner

Electricity consumption today within TEPCO reached 41.29 million KW or 87.3% of their supply limit. Exceeding 30 degrees C in Tokyo, we too started using our air-conditioner at home. It is the newly installed ecological model by Toshiba and it said today’s consumption was 148 Yen for 10.5 hours.
