Après le Désir -

The training of Messiah singing came to the ending Amen chorus in this month. Those members who already have sung Handel before tend to be more open and energetic when it comes to Hallelujah or Amen, but I for the very first attempt am completely occupied to digest each song in the stomach myself. I have listened to Messiah number of times, a hearing expert so to speak, but as I sing it, Handel keeps me impressed with his extraordinary skills of craftsmanship.
As for the score, while Novello Edition is recommended which is most popular and even available in a paperback, I came across with Oxford Edition and I found it most convenient reading the words because it is a wider letter-size print. I further scan the chorus pages and retype the words with thicker characters for some of the songs for the ease in practice.
For the remaining 3 months, we go back to the beginning for the final brush-up, but I joined the chorus this year when the Part 1 training had been over, and thus I have to continue practicing myself at home for preparation.

Kamakura Fireworks -

I saw the fireworks in Kamakura today. It was a smaller fireworks event, and the atmosphere was relaxed without too much packed crowd boiling up everywhere because the beach from Yuigahama to Zaimokuza is quite broad accepting the spectators spaciously. The show basically consisted of the splash of flowers on the water and high launches of big, round fireworks. I thought it was somewhat monotonous.

This quarterly magazine features a long interview with Haruki Murakami in its summer 2010 issue. The author has always avoided the talks on the subject of his works, and therefore it is worth a watch and this rather unusually fluent conversation is also interesting because the author himself discusses how he evolved writing novels. I nodded at several passages as I read it.

● About writing a “story”. If one defines him as storyteller, I am the evidence because I who seldom read novels continue enjoying his works.
● “Enough of a story in realism.” - after writing Norwegian Wood.
● 1Q84 is structures after Well-tempered Klavier by Bach with 14 sections each in Books 1 and 2. It means Book 3 was not in the picture originally.
● "The colloquial portion is truly vital. In the narrative part, I tend to use metaphors in place for descriptive sentences, to structure paraphrases in layers, and leave many that should be described to something else."

And more discussion continues.

Summer's Sun -

Summer is come on the beach of Zaimokuza at last, appeal the clouds in the sky. The sunbeam today was truly dazzling. On the other hand, the extreme rains continue in the western part of Japan.

Suffering Country's Election

I have no idea how the people in this country hope to move the government. The result of the last weekend’s Upper House election was something like the situation in which investors had made the change last year in a company with wrong management and years of cumulative deficits to force the entire renewal, but they now suggest their resignation before seeing the result of this entire fiscal because the business improvement afterward was limited and the management’s strategy-setting looked somewhat unprofessional. If the investors enforce their responsibility by caprice, how could the management practice the long-term projects?
I hope the media give us a thorough analysis of people's thoughts and intents instead of superficially throwing the catchy words like “Democratic Party’s Complete Loss” and stimulating political instability. Let’s look at the number of votes gained by major parties for example, and surely as expected, Your Party has attracted people's attention:

Fujifilm Square runs an exhibition of Ansel Adams, and I went to see it. A small event showing only 16 or 17 photos taken in Yosemite and else in 1963, but we can be in the monochrome world of Ansel's for a while, and I found some photos interesting such as Sonoma Valley and maple leaves.

Hanging PET Vase –

Thinking of what to decorate on the room wall by using the picture rail, the immediate thought was to hang a vase. I may have received stimulation from a recent TV program reporting Chelsea Flower Show. But I have no proper vases in hand nor have I come across with variety of options in the Internet search except a bit pricy Jurgen Lehl. In the meantime, until I find something that fits, I hang a PET bottle. If I line up five of those, they might look gorgeous, I guess.
By the way, I decided not to hang here the print of Marco Del Re but in the corridor.

Nike Siege 2

I bought a new sunglass. It is Nike Siege 2, an athletes' model that is getting popular recently enabling to integrate sight-adjustment lenses behind the filters. I like the design as well as the fitting comfort, but what really surprised me was its great visibility. The blue of the sky and the green of the trees were breathtaking, and it was a powerful tool to make your hiking more pleasant with a new sensation. That was how I enjoyed my recent walk in Gavarnie.
There are 5 different options for tint filters (check the following link for simulations: http://www.nikevision.com/lens-simulator), and mine came with “Speed”. Also attached was normal Grey filter the colors through which were truly natural. Speed had a slightly brownish view.

Beocom 6000 Battery -

The battery for Beocom 6000 phone was handled by 3 shops when I searched in Amazon France, and the specs were NiMH 700mAh/3.6V. I managed to obtain one for 15 or 16 Euros plus 7 more for the local delivery while I was staying long enough in France. I replaced the batteries upon my return home, and the phone is now functioning flawlessly.

The Road to FIFA Best 8 -

From the very beginning, my greatest hope was the penalty shoot-out after 0-0 because Kawashima, our goalkeeper, had been the man with luck through this tournament who deserved entrusted. In the match actually, the ability of Paraguay was far superior in managing the physical body, the pressure, and the ball controls allowing very few chances for Japan to maintain the ball even marginally. Therefore the result of 0-0 was better than realistic outcome, I thought. All the players did a very good job for 120 minutes.
The third kicker in the PK was Komano, and frankly I uttered that it shouldn’t be him. I am in no way to accuse him and prepared entirely to accept the result when it comes to penalty shoot-out, but the kickers I had in mind were Nakamura, Honda and Nakazawa. And my sixth sense often hits the point unfortunately. Even Kawashima’s luck could not stop the cool and excellent penalty shots by Paraguayans. Still, he is one of the greatest assets gained in this event for us considering the team in 4 years to come.

Ryu Goto Presents a Concert - 五嶋龍とEnsemble Ditto

I went to the concert produced by Ryu Goto today. He introduced Ensemble Ditto’s, a group of young Korean musicians based in New York, but a quartet would not be the right fit in the huge Hall A of Tokyo International Forum.
15 minutes past the supposed opening time, the lighting faded, and it started a commercial of the sponsor company on large video displays in both ends of the stage, and I realized it was actually a pop concert with classical music.
As expected in the first piece, the strings were muffled and the sound was poor even if it was a Stradivari. On the other hand, the final piece, Morricone, turned more sibilant with much improved balance of sonality. I concluded that the sound engineer must have started groping the knobs and gradually managed to finetune the sound as the program progressed. I believe the concert was sound-reinforced to cover the capacity of the hall.
The players were all skillful, and in particular Ji-Yong, the pianist, was impressive. Michael Nicolas, the cellist, was excellent, too. In the program, Brahms Piano Quartet No.1 was the highlight, although I wanted the violin sang the melody more vividly.
As for Ryu Goto, his keys sounded rather loose with Handel unfortunately with less concentration probably, but played his favorite variations from “the Last Rose of Summer” as the long encore, which was his careful effort servicing the audience.

FIFA: Japan Played Beautifully –

Wow, watching the match without a sleep really paid off! The game of victory over Dane was as beautiful as seldom possible. Honda definitely boosted his market price, but the core value was in that all the players kept running and did their jobs as required. They were a great team! Nagatomo may soon receive offers from Europe. Although it did not score a goal, the artistic touch of Matsui looked fascinating in repeated slow replays. The single only concern I have is with the coach’s wisdom with flexibility, because he should have sent Morimoto out to the field in the last 10 minutes or so to allow him experience the real fight, but Okada is always stubborn and he may be even stiffer as the new formation is functionning.

FIFA 2010 Legend

A fascinating advertising attracted my attention in the in-flight magazine of Air France the other day that said "three exceptional careers".
On the other hand, les Bleus have now been eliminated, and it seemed to me a logical consequence as the team had no speed nor aggression but too many thoughtless mishandings. It was like a suffering team in J-league.

RIMBAUD MANIA -

I came across with an exhibition titled "Rimbaud Mania" at History Library of Paris in Marais. It was a small collection of various items such as translated books into other languages, vinyl records and CDs, illustrations, stage performances, and other creative works inspired by Rimbaud or even rappel pins. A few hand-written notes of poems and a letter to Paul Demeny were the most seroius ingredients that displayed a very fine and dense writing on paper by him. The newly discovered photo was also in display. They put these items into a catalog book titled RIMBAUD MANIA for some 40 Euros, but I was unusually reluctant to buy one considering the weight of my baggage. Maybe next time somewhere else...

Pelléas et Mélisande -

I saw "Pelleas and Melisande" at Opera Comique from 20:00. About this tragic story of German Prince written by Maeterlink, I have no idea what it means thematically nor what kind of conditions in the particular period made Debussy compose it, but it seemed that the story had something common with Wagner's stage and in addition Debussy's challenge was to establish an ultimate form of French language in dramatic presentation. In this sense, it was more like a drama with music accompaniment rather than an opera.
Sir Gardiner managed the music brilliantly, as usual, and my worry that I might not be able to tolerate myself to its finale was totally groundless as the stage was truly inducing. I could follow the language displayed above, and the singers were all excellent, too. I also think that the relatively small size of this theater helped ensuring the intimacy to singers and enjoying the energetic expression with dynamism in generally quiet, lyric passages. The ending of act III where Golaud forces his son Yniold watch the young couple and report to him, the orchestra sounded as if the climax of the entire story. The only missing factor to me this time was Monteverdi Choir because this opera did not need the chorus on stage.

The theater was almost completely full, and I thought our seats were in the first balcony, but they were actually on the ground level without the sight of orchestra pit. It was different from what I assumed but the location was still good. The best area appeared in the first raw of the middle section of the second floor balcony or it's both ends. The performance ended at 23:30 and we went back to our apartment redigesting what we had seen.

Museums in Nice -

We found a bus-stop near our hotel, and we took #100 bus to Nice. It was a busy line and about 90 minute travel along the coast line of Côte d'Azur. In the middle of this route, Monaco was very much jammed where I had an impression of a city inviting les riches du monde in this air pocket. The bus also passes through Beaulieu-sur-Mer that appeared as an upper class resort. It did not pass the village of Eze but I saw through the back window an eagle's nest atop the mountain.

We had to take #22 or #15 bus, 2 streets off from Nice bus terminal, and while I was carefully examining the panel information at the stop, an old lady approached me asking "where to?", and kindly assured it was the right stop.

Mattise museum was in a park with ancient Roman remains, and thé facility was small. There were some displays and explanations about Chapel Rosaire, but not in full detail. We saw some unfamiliar sculptures and attractive oils to our satisfaction, and ran to the next Chagall Museum with much concern about the time of our flight.
Chagall Museum was nation-owned, large facility. The collection tended to gather large canvases. I thought it would be more interesting if they focus on thematic exhibitions, but it was an unexpected discovery to see a harpsichord with Chagall's painting on the back of it's lid. The instrument was settled in a dark room displaying his stained-glass work.
The return bus of #22 did not stop where we had started, so we got off at the very busy area in front of Galery Lafayette, and luckily we found a taxi pool in front, so we waited one for a few minutes and took off to the airport. It was all we did in Nice.

I have been using iPad on the road for over 2 weeks now, and it is rather tough. The information access is the life line of traveling, but because of the famous Flash problem, I often came across with sites that were not properly displayed, and the situation becomes fatal with time-table search. Also such a simple matter as taking screen shots of maps does not work with iPad inconveniently. Below describes what I felt during the trip.

Quite frequently, my fingers touch the screen unwillingly while working on the keyboard. On this software keyboard, a slight touch is an entry, and it greatly annoys your input effort. An external keyboard would be the solution, or you train yourself to hold your fingers up high from the screen and play with longer finger travels. When will be the day when the display is not touch-sensing but pressure-sensing?

When it comes the the Japanese entry method, I am a genuine minority using "kana" keys. I cannot imagine how other people could happily live with the foreign QWERT keys designed for an alphabetical language to enter a completely different structure of language. Particularly when manipulating foreign words, "minor" for example, I have to enter it "maina-", and it is where my brain is forced to cease thinking. I would not be using iPad if the options of entries are not supported.

The Japanese conversion engine is not wise, either, and I only hope such alternative options as ATOK become available.

I was ignorantly unaware of the fact that the mail application only displayed maximum 200 messages, and the capacity was far from satisfying when you have more than 2-weeks of travel as you completely lose the access to older mails. I do not see any filtering function of SPAMs.

Regarding networking, it appeared that Wi-Fi was relatively popular in France, and I did not see problems in big cities like Paris, Bayonne, Bordeaux and San Sebastian.
In Lourdes though, I stayed in a cheap hotel mainly for pilgrimage where they let me use a power supply with an Ether terminal, apparently a PLC unit, so I picked up my Logitec box to hook up, but it failed establishing the connection. the bureau of tourism suggested me a MacDonals nearby which was spacious and clean and Wi-Fi worked flawlessly and freely while I had chips and beer.

Menton, Côte d'Azur -

We moved to Menton by train from Cagnes-sur-Mer, and we had to change trains at Monte Carlo where the platforms were in a sort of tunnel and the smell of diesel gas was unbearable. Our hotel in Menton was by the beach, but the sea was very rough today because of strong winds. The water was emerald along the beach charmingly although it was obvious that the season has not started yet. We went out to town for a straw and while having late lunch it started raining rather hard, and we had to wait until it calmed down watching the first match of Portugal in the restaurant.
Gathering information at the tourism office, I noted that they had a music festival every August with some well-known artists: this year for example are Maria Joao Pires, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Sinfonia Varsovia. The one who attracted my attention the most was Christophe Rousset's clavecin concert. I have no idea how congested the summer would be here, but the fish was absolutely great and the walks and the shoppings are very comfortable, so I thought it was the correct judgment avoiding the city like Nice to stay.

It rained in Menton, and the wind blew hard from the sea, too. Del Re's original print in hand was at mercy, and I really felt the need for a hard paperboard to protect it. I noticed a stack of folded paper boxes in a store we bought some souvenirs, and I asked the lady in the cashier if I could take one. She said that all the stores in the area would put these things out on the street as garbage tonight after closing so I could pick whatever I wanted around 9 o'clock. That's how I became a trash man in Menton. I walked the busy shopping then deserted and quickly found a couple of very new carton boards in the preferred size among some used boxes in a fashion store front. I picked one and folded it in halves to bring back to the hotel. Matching it with the print, the size perfectly fit with it.

Chapelle de Rosaire, Vence -

We went to Vence which is about 10-minute #400 bus ride further up from St. Paul, but the bus comes sometimes in 15 minute interval or otherwise over 1 hour, therefore you should check the time-table at the bus stop. The bus won't arrive on time anyway. Vence was a larger town with lots of condominiums and traffic while in it's center was a bit like St. Paul with traditional stone houses inside the walls where you would enjoy a promenade seeing shops and restaurants. For a normal stay in tourism, it seemed this town was more convenient. In the church within the wall is a work of mosaic by Chagall quietly without attracting attentions.

The primary purpose of ours was to visit Chapelle de Rosaire a.k.a. Matisse Chapel in this place. It was as small as Foujita Chapelle in Reims but the interior was arranged for services anytime. On the left and in front of walls were stained-glass windows of yellow, blue and green colors in the form of leaves seemingly. The sunlight comes through the left windows in the morning, and from the font in the afternoon. On the right were very simple illustrations of black color on white tiles. St. Dominique on the side of the altar, and on the closer wall where we sat was the Child spreading his arms like a crucifix in the breast of Maria. On the back wall were illustrations of the Passion numbered from 1 up to 14 that looked like rough sketches. The colors of stained-glass blurred on the white tiles and floor were impressive. Outside the Chapel were some displays of sketches, costume designs for the bishop, and alternative ideas of the Chapel by Matisse. Photos were prohibited everywhere here.
