Collapsing Nike Sunglasses - 5

I bought this Nike Siege 2 about 5 years. It looked cool, but its nose piece started dissolving in 2+ years and I replaced it. The picture is how it looks like today: The rubber material of the temples tore out by itself to have the core metal bars stick out. Furthermore, the tiny cracks on the inner surface layer of filter lenses develop all over which is fatal. In no way, it is a quality product!

A Couple of Period Instrument Groups

I booked the concert of Sigisward Kuijken and La Petite Bande visiting Tokyo next March. The story how it developed follows below:

Sunday night, NHK broadcast Bach Collegium Japan concert celebrating it 25th anniversary and their winning of Suntory Music Award. The day before this Suntory Hall event were they in Hiroshima for the same performance of Bach's B-minor mass to commemorate 70 years after the last war and A-bomb. To tell the truth, I do not much appreciate Masaaki Suzuki's music from his early days, and I do not go to his concerts basically. I did not pay the attention to this broadcast either. Only because I misinterpreted that Hiroya Aoki, counter-tenor in the choir would sing the solo part in this concert, I tuned in. About 25 choir singers lined up, each of them would be found as invited soloists in such concerts like ourselves or many other groups to perform. I could recognize at least one or two singers in each part, and they form a choir! It can be easily imagined that many singing fans would think "how could I miss this opportunity!"

The broadcast was in 5.1 surround sound, and I should first of all mention this: What is vital in this mass music is the vocal parts including the chorus, and I need to stress that the voices reach us with their full force. Even though the singers stand behind the instruments, they shouldn't be treated like side players. I felt the vocal volume was too modest in general unfortunately. Surround sound was also modest, and because it is the matter of sound field design, I don't necessarily consider it negative, but being keen about dimensional perspectives myself as a long-time proponent, this relatively plain arrangement was not appealing enough personally.

The concert itself contained a lot of interesting aspects to listen to. The instruments, for example, consisted of well-known players or so-called masters/mistresses, and their obligati were indeed pleasing. The brass on the other hand just occasionally suffered from controlling the tunes or delay on the beat, but those period instruments are essentially a challenge especially in the live performance, so I tend not to panic. The point is how Suzuki directs these players toward a horizon, and he has always been good at packaging the music stainlessly clean and compact, but I tend to feel difficult finding the core heart out of his music. He is consistent in this regard since he started, perhaps the source of world's recognition, therefore it may well be the problem is mine as a listener. Gould, Rifkin and Gardiner amused me so much when it comes to Bach's music with great excitement, and in comparison I contemplate it might be the lack or the thinner air in the music singing in case of Suzuki, but I have no clue on this issue.

The soloists were all foreigners except Makoto Sakurada, tenor. Robin Blaze, counter-tenor seemed to enjoy a VIP treatment without joining the choir. Rachael Nichols, second soprano was immersed almost entirely in the score while soloists are excepted to perform on stage with their facial expressions as well as singing. This level seemed easily substituted by domestic singers, but there may be a farsighted, careful consideration elsewhere. Anyway, Hiroya Aoki, my wishful thinking, was on his job among alto singers in the choir.

The most impressive part to myself was 6-voice expanding into 8-voice from Pleni sunt in Sanctus to Hosanna. Amazing melisma with uniform precision unlike a choir and the entire balance of voices sounded to me an ultimate textbook to remember.

While listening, I noted the words "Kuijken visits Japan with Matthäus Passion" in a direct mail from HMV, and I immediately felt the essential opportunity in the context of small baroque ensembles. Earlier this year, I enjoyed the Johannes Passion performance by Lake Biwa Vocal Ensemble, and Kuijken is definitely an interest comparison. The advance tickets were on sale last Sunday, and they are running out, so I should rush. Luckily, some 5000 yen seats were still available through PIA site, and I took a seat in the far end balcony block. When I examined more into details later, it came to my knowledge that there was another performance in Yokohama after Tokyo, and considering the size of premise is about a half, I should have targeted this alternative!

Frankly, Kuijken (+Bruggen) has been another baroque group that does not fit me well, and I am not much into listening to them, but now I am proactively facing with these two groups that I do not appreciate much so far. It's an interesting progress!
