We wanted a floor lamp by the sofa in our living room, and I checked the current Le Klint line-up that was quite limited in the choice and also the price went rather higher up. I was curious to know if the situation was same outside Japan, and cruised the web. I got to a shop site called Trenddesign24 in Germany where they carried much wider choices at very reasonable prices. They also offer “free shipment”. Unsure about the reliability of this shop, I immediately entered an order of model 369 in black for only $496, probably for a half of domestic price if available.
The order confirmation came back swiftly, but afterward purely mechanical 1-line messages such as “Status: processing” or “Shipped” arrived in 4-to-5 days of intervals. I felt as if I was shopping in an unattended store with no help. Finally 10 days after my order placement, the product was in the hand of UPS, and it again went invisible for a few days. I then checked the status using the tracking number to find it was sitting at Narita airport after its arrival. While it was a great relief to know the item actually made its journey from Germany to Japan via Hong Kong, I still felt uneasy. I phoned UPS Japan, and they explained that the customs clearance had not started without the invoice. Trenddesign24 did not attach an invoice with the product, nor sent one to me separately. As I had my order confirmation reply e-mail with some detail descriptions, I copied it to UPS in hope that it would help the customs.

Che Guevara Trilogy –

I heard from a friend who worked in a studio that Soderberg’s movies “Che” in two separate parts were quite a hit rather unexpectedly. This coincides with 50th anniversary of Cuban revolution. I saw these movies in February. The movies plainly trace the guerilla actions while Guevara’s passionate and profound devotion is woven in scenes like a theme of music structure. For our generation, the word “revolution” and talking something on this subject are always heavy, and I for myself think about several things that I would mention, but any tiny sprouts of ideas look totally premature. A close class-mate friend in our college days said to me that he had made up his mind to be a “professional revolutionist”, and it meant that he went underground in the other side of this river that we, others, did not attempt to trespass, and I still think about him.
I actually saw another Guevara movie in series. You might wonder the third episode? Well, the broadcast satellite timely showed “Motorcycle Diaries”. Walter Salles, Director, is highly respected hero-moviemaker in Latin America. Among the three movies, I personally enjoyed this one most and shared the closest intimacy with Che as a young medical student.
In addition, I happened to see a TV program that reported an episode of Guevara in Japan who sneaked out of Osaka in the night to visit Hiroshima as he felt it more important than his official programs. I was in Hiroshima at that time but never learned about him. A local magazine called Gumbo features an article about him in Hiroshima.

Bushido -

In January when I was in San Francisco, I encountered with “Bushido” by Inazo Nitobe in a bookstore, and I immediately took it to the cashier. It was a book written around 1900 and discussed a few elements that formed the core of Japanese virtues, perhaps with a sense of anxiety losing them with time in his mind. It all started from a question raised by Belgian jurist, M. de Laveleye: “How do you impart moral education with no religious instruction in your schools?”
I struggled with his classy, century-old English, and almost wrecked frankly, as I later bought another book back in Japan that consisted of English text on the left and Japanese translation on the right in spread pages which was actually very good with lots of auxiliary explanations.
The foundation of Japanese ethics that Nitobe discussed was the ancient regimes of Samurai which had already diminished, and with all the effort to follow American value system after the World War II in Japan, I felt we had come too far to recover our virtues particularly when the moral is something that is accumulated by each one of individuals. Coincidentally, the TV program “Sunday Project” this morning discussed what was missing in Japan now, and Yoshiko Sakurai pointed Bushido as the keyword for the nation’s recovery.

A high wall and an egg

Japanese TV media reported that Haruki Murakami criticized Israeli attacks of Gaza in the Jerusalem Prize ceremony. Why do our media always try to cheat the attention of people merely superficially?
Murakami, a non-political novelist through his entire life, will hardly adhere to one side of regimes or boycott something because of a political reason.
He is by nature very sensitive to the individual’s dignity. In his speech this time, he simply clarified his fundamental stance by the metaphor of “a hard, high wall and an egg” that he would never stand for a system that makes the life of individuals difficult. In my understanding, he felt a sense of best balance in concluding that there would be some meaning to receive this prize once his message was communicated.

Inamuragasaki Onsen -

I walked from Zaimokuza to Inamuragasaki along the beach of Sagami Bay. Facing the park of Inamuragasaki across Route 134 is a restaurant called Sundish, and there is a hotsprings facility behind it for 1300 Yen admission. The water is black that you feel very smooth on the skin and there is an outdoor tub, too. Note that kids are not allowed.

Four Seasons Mozaic -

In early 90's, Jeanne Lamon and Tafelmusik made a recording of Haendel's Concerti Grossi for Vivarte label, which was truly lovely piece of music to me. I have not heard their further achievements until Vivaldi's L'estro Armonico recorded in 2007.
I bought the CD late last year and facing with their aggressively swift playing style, I felt overwhelmed as if I myself gained the ages at least two times faster than they did. As for L'estro Armonico, the old vinyl record of Marriner and ASMF released by Argo is still undisputably the one I rely on.
Lamon's new CD actually came with a bonus DVD titled "Four Seasons Mosaic" that I forgot its presence until just recently, and I was totally amazed with this bonus! It was Lamon's project to bring Vivaldi's Four Seasons to a new horizon through collaboration with different artistic cultures. Participated in this project were Chinese pipa, Indian sarangi, and Canadian Inuit's throat singing. I was thoroughly indulged in this video documentary DVD for a while. A disc definitely worth trying.
