Cambridge Audio Azur650BD

ユニバーサルプレーヤーが来た。Cambridge AudioのAZUR650BDという製品の展示品処分を手に入れた。なにしろSACDもBlu-rayも、そしてDVD-Audioもこの一台で再生できて、SACDのストリーム出力もあるので、ほぼこちらの希望通りの仕様だ。これでPS3の後継たり得るか？
梱包を手にするとかなりいい感じの重量感だったが、本体自体はさほど重くなかった。ディスクを再生してみると、ボンネットがモーター回転に起因して相当振動している。これは制動した方が良さそうだ。メカ動作ノイズは安っぽいが、レスポンスはとても速い。リモコンにPURE AUDIOのボタンがあって、ワンタッチでビデオ系をオフできる。これは気に入った。
ディスクは何でもかかりそうでも、このプレーヤーでも、エアチェックしたDVD録画は予想通りほぼ再生不能だ。BD-Rもアウトだったが、なぜかBD-REはBD-AVファイルとして読み込まれ再生に成功した。プレーヤーにはUSB端子もあって、ここにSDカードを接続すれば、音楽や写真も楽しめるらしい。但し音声フォーマットとしてAACには非対応なので、我がiPodは役に立たないと思う。

さて、我が家で初めてDSDストリーム接続による再生ができるようになったので、さっそく聴き親しんだSACDをいくつか再生してみる。SACDについては、一度知人宅でシャープのデジタルアンプと専用プレーヤーの組み合わせを聴かせてもらった時、そのS/Nの良さ（静寂感）に度肝を抜かれ、やはりこれはちゃんと向き合うべきだと痛感したことがある。それ以外の経験ではあまり納得はしていない。
残念ながら今回もあの時のような静寂感は出てこない。全体的に腰高、細身で神経質な音になる。これはいつも通りの傾向。ノジマのオーディオ担当さんが言うようにSAECのHDMIケーブルが影響しているのだろうか？彼はAIMかもしくはアナログ出力も試す価値ありと言っていた。
続いて2Lのディスクを数枚並べて、Blu-rayと聞き比べをしてみた。結果は別物かと思うくらいの違いだった。Blu-rayはハイビットのPCMをロスレス圧縮する方式で、こちらは3次元的パースペクティブがはっきり聞こえ、しかもその空間が遙かに広い。SACDでは前後感が混濁して平面的だ。SACDをもう少し何とかできないかと課題が残る。オーディオという趣味は一手打つと新たな課題が出てきて、泥沼に入っていくというのが性悪なところで後に引けなくなるものだ。


I got this universal player in a shop’s deal of their display samples. It works with SACD, Blu-ray and even DVD-Audio, and also outputs DSD stream of SACD meeting my criteria almost entirely.
The delivered package was relatively heavy and I felt it promising, although the actual weight of the unit was not so heavy. Playing discs, the metal top cover vibrated rather wildly along with the motor rotation which probably needs some damping. The noise of the mechanism sounded toy’ish while the response was very quick. There is a PURE AUDIO button on the remote that instantaneously turns off the video section, which I liked.
Universal players appear to accept any discs, but the reality as expected with this player was not supporting home-made DVD’s that digitally copied the broadcast programs. BD-R was also rejected, but somehow BD-RE discs were accepted. The player features USB terminals for playing music or photos on your SD card. Unfortunately, AAC was not supported in the audio format, therefore my iPod won’t be able to take advantage of this feature.

This is the very first time my system enjoys DSD stream from the player to the A/V controller, and I was excited to play my favorite SACD discs. To date, generally speaking, I haven’t been fully satisfied with the sound of SACD except the case of a friend of mine who had a Sharp digital amp and its companion SACD player that represented an amazing S/N quality an its quietness of the program was utterly breathtaking.
Well, Azur650BD did not provide the same sense of S/N with my system unfortunately. The overall sound was upright, nervously slim as I often feel it a typical character with SACD. Does this have something to do with the SAEC’s HDMI cable? The sales guy at the audio shop suggested an AIM or even analog cabling to try...
I then played some discs of 2L as they allow comparison of Blu-ray and SACD in the same program. Blu-ray is essentially high-bit PCM audio with lossless compression, and it had much clearer dimensional perspectives. Its acoustic space sounded much larger while with SACD the front and the back seemed overlapping to result in a rather flat soundstage. It is definitely a challenge to tackle for further improvement in SACD listening.
