今年は桜の見頃を目指して弘前に行くことにした。これが今回の旅行の第1テーマ。首都圏の開花が10日くらい早かったので弘前はどうなるか心配しつつ、それでも冬の豪雪のことを考えるとそんなに早くはならないだろうと予想していた。弘前でこの時期の宿は難しかろうと、青森のリッチモンドホテルを確保した。29日に現地入りしたが、天候はパッとしないし寒さも厳しく、開花も遅れてやっと咲き始めたばかりというタイミングになってしまった。
それでも2、3早咲きの枝垂れがあり、岩木山の素晴らしい眺めも展望でき、種類の多さは日本一と謳われる弘前公園はしっかり心を満たしてくれる場所だった。

Hirosaki Park is probably the best place to
watch sakura as they grow the widest variety of cherry trees in Japan. Early
May is its season but this year the blooming was late, and we miss the narrow
range of its peak by a few days. It was nonetheless a wonderful walk with the
gorgeous view of Mt. Iwaki. We thought the hotel booking in Hirosaki was tight,
and stayed at Richmond Hotel Aomori which was quite good.
