Rouault and Matisse -
Rouault and Matisse were respected friends each other, and for me since in my youth they were most favorite artists with different styles. I saw Matisse in SFMOMA last summer, a fruitful experience to have encountered with his sculptures. I haven’t seen Rouault for quite long time though. In this exhibition in Shiodome, Baudelaire’s “Les Fleurs du Mal” was interesting, and I wish if I could take time and read these two books in hand.

Metro Min.
Metro Min is a free magazine you can get in Tokyo subway stations, and you will find a series of stories by Shinya Fujiwara in it. I am not sure if he writes fictions or non-fictions, but they are regarding his experience around him relating miracles of human heart, and I love reading them. He wrote about Tibet in the recent issue that regards with the past outrage by Chinese and this may be the historical background of all the ongoing problems today. Above all, it was a touching story.

Les enfants gâtés -
At the foot of Namikibashi Bridge near Shibuya is a restaurant with very French atmosphere. Les Enfants Gâtés gained the single star in the recent Michelin Tokyo Guide, and last Wednesday after I arrived at Narita airport, I went directly to my office, and then had a dinner with a French and an American struggling to stay up against my jet lag in the evening.
The course menu with their specialty terrine is reasonably less than 7,000 Yen. I chose salmon terrine and lamb for the main dish both of which was excellent. We relied wines on the most particular Frenchman who picked Saint Julien and Pauillac, and ended up with relatively costly dinner. An efficient way to take advantage of this restaurant would probably be to stop by late in the evening and sit in the bar near the entrance to have your choice of terrine and wine.

W San Francisco
W San Francisco is one of my favorite hotels since it opened. Young and plain interior with no exaggeration that reminds me of a space produced by Terence Conran as an example, and above all is the comfortable bed to sleep in for travelers fighting with jet-lag. I stopped staying here when the rate exceeded $300, but this time we got a special corporate arrangement.
I don’t usually have my breakfast in the hotel because it is sufficient to stop by at a coffee shop in town for a latte and a croissant. The picture shows the breakfast on Sunday in my room with $2.50 strawberries and $9 “Fontina Val D’aosta” raw milk cheese from Piemonte that I bought in the market, $8 latte and croissant from the hotel. I roughly ate $12 and the cheese was quite satisfying.

Water on Sands
Artificially Magnificent Tower of Desires on Desert
How can I say about Las Vegas? The original concept of this blog was a collection of recommendable things, but I wrote some negative phrases about an airliner recently. At least, the suitcase topic was a good start. And then regarding the destination of its trip, my comment tends to be bitter because the place does not appeal to my taste inherently.
The first hotel was the Venetian and it was excellent. (No quote for the second.) The lobby arcade architecture was truly gorgeous (although the touch of ceiling painting appeared slightly primitive in a closer look), and the elegant scent effectively calmed our heart. And furthermore the room was spacious with semi-suite layout. Approaching the piazza of shops, the sky is fictitiously blue all the time even during the night and a grand canal is built in it with gondolas. One will easily forget actually standing on the desert of Nevada.
More aggressively, Bellagio, probably one of the most fabulous hotels now in Vegas, has a huge man-made pond in front where the attraction of fountains takes place every 15 minutes. Mirage started the same years ago. Near the lobby is a charmingly colorful space of fairy tale botanical garden where up-scaled watering pots poor water on the flowers incessantly. Vegas has shifted its focus from gambling to a resort in recent years, but it is a world with no genuine things like an amusement park gathering replicas from all over the world. And its contradiction is this recent direction drives further developments. Next to Bellagio is another 900 million dollar construction going on.
I cannot but raise a question: how long could this unlimited supply of water and electricity on the desert continue? All this is being pushed and pushed by the human desires, and the entire tower on the desert looks to me like a mere collection of artificial desires. When it comes to collective replicas, Ohtsuka Museum near Naruto City is much tinier in scale but seems representing some value in it.

NAB 2008
With Apple’s and Avid’s withdrawal, NAB this year is rumored shrinking but I at least saw a steady focus on HD even with 4K pictures here and there. In the shop near the entrance were quite a variety of reference books of technologies and I found among them Tom Holman’s Surround Sound. I revisited the shop to buy a copy on the last day when it was in the middle of closing sale and the book had been all gone. I ran to another shop in South Hall and managed to get hold of the last inventory luckily with 10% off.

United -
NAB(全米放送機器展)でラスベガスに来た。
I came to Las Vegas for NAB show. My usual flight is ANA but in order to join a meeting upon my arrival, I took earlier United this time. I bought a new suitcase small enough to carry-on. It’s German Titan X2. I somehow managed to squeeze 2 suits, 1 pair shoes, and other stuff for a week travel in this tiny capacity. Quite efficient.
As expected, United arrived at SFO more than 30 minutes late but it was not too late to catch the connecting flight. In the flight was the slight disorder of usual United. Another passenger showed up later to my seat and the attendants had to settle this overbooking. The upgrade to a remaining first-class seat was me. I ordered Japanese dinner and came a pure western plate of starter to puzzle me. A rather senior attendant told me she had Californian Pinot, so I ordered it. It tasted like Australian Syrah when the glass came, so I was about to ask to see the label when another attendant apologetically came to explain to me with the bottle saying “sorry, she doesn’t know the things, and do you want to change?” This syrah was actually good and I wanted it refilled. Then started the real Japanese dinner.

Flower and space architect -
When we dropped in for a tea at Café Strøget in Illums of Ikebukuro Seibu Department Store, Mr. Daniel Ost was with a few people at the next table. It was quite possible because he held a “micro cosmos exhibition” here whole this week. Wearing a clean stand-collar shirt and a jacket, he looked more senior than I thought through TV in working outfit. The exhibition was quite packed in rather small space, and this time calla seemed the main feature with an appeal of green and white contrast. I also found some red arrangements were impressive. Near the exit with shop space, Mr. Ost was sitting at a desk offering his autograph for visitors, so we bought his exceptionally expensive book and we had a brief conversation as he signed in my book. The good news is he will have a surprise in Kyoto again next spring.

Cherry Trees in Harajuku -
18:00 the day before yesterday, I went to Rikugien to see the illuminated cherry trees but they had discontinued the service already and the gate was closed. I was in Harajuku today and stopped by at Togo Memorial Shrine. The last chance to see the blossoms and the fallen petals float on the pond elegantly.

Chris Botti in Blu-ray -
Chris Botti Live album is available in Blu-ray. I heard him play in a compilation album titled “Legends of Jazz” a while ago, but this time the new disc features such major guest players as Sting and Bacharach to make the concert very enjoyable. The sound quality is exceptionally high as if I can feel the fine texture of instruments. It is an exact example of master-quality 96kHz, 24-bit, 5.1 surround, and the level of HD quality would be higher than that of video.
