Went to Tachikawa Ecute to buy a whole-rice roll cake. Today is the real final day for Le Genmai and there is no tomorrow for them. Expressing our appreciation to this pâtisserie, we decided to have the last role cake. Merci beaucoup, Le Genmai!

Cherries in Full Bloom –
This weekend will be a chaos in gardens for cherry-watching parties under full bloom trees, thanks to the great weather. In my neighborhood, near the south exit of Oizumi-Gakuen station are cherries in Honma House known as a spot not for parties but just watching.

Japan Romantische straße -
Invited by the brilliant weather, I had a walk in Tsumagoi. It took 2 hours for about 8 kilometers from Manza-Kazawaguchi train station to Prince Land in North Karuizawa. The road is named Japan Romantische straße. The spring sun was higher in the sky to warm the ground, and the air around the farms was soft and comfortable. What a gorgeous view of mountains in distance wearing the white! Having Mt. Asama in front and Mt. Shirane in the back, this beautiful landscape would be mine, if I move to this neighborhood. I dropped in at Isuzu, a buckwheat noodle restaurant, in Uenohara for lunch. With great vegetables that you can expect in Tsumagoi area and excellent quality oil for tempura, the noodle lunch was quite enjoyable.

Breakfast at Tiffany's -
Cocooning myself in mountain for these 4-day holidays. In the bookstore on the way, I saw Haruki Murakami’s new translation, so I brought it with me. I read it at my leisure. As I mentioned before, I am not a good reader essentially, and have never read originals by Truman Capote. I loved Henry Mancini’s music, but Brake Edward’s movie was not really digestible for a mid-school boy. As for Mr. Murakami, he says he was overwhelmingly impressed by Capote’s style of English writing already in his high-school days.
It was a clear day today. The snow was dazzling before disappearing. Mt. Shirane was equally dazzling far beyond.

Daniel Ost in Ninnaji -
I watched a satellite TV program of great flower event that took place in Ninnaji temple, Kyoto in 2004. This 2-hour special was about Daniel Ost who displayed an outstanding ability producing the entire space arrangement. Flowers were arranged with a definite volume to attract the eyes and simplicity that resonated with the sense of profoundness (“yugen”) characteristically. This flavor looked in a different direction from Japanese “wabi and sabi”. How he builds the elements was utterly precise, and it left no exceptions even in the collaboration with supporting local artists for decorative papers, lacquer and ceramic tools.
Something I want to introduce here is a beautiful countertenor that I heard in this program. It was Sehun Jung, Korean musician, who sang Panis Angelicus and Caccina’s Ave Maria. It was not easy to find his acitivites in the web, but I managed to get the CD featuring these songs in the end. In my impression, he was in line with now-trendy “visual” classic and blended it with light relaxation music that seemed to be his attempt to develop a new area.

New Zealand Wine Tasting
I went to ANA hotel in Roppongi for a tasting of New Zealand wines. It was said that registrations were to be limited to 400 but actually more than 500 people signed up. For the fee of 2,000 yen, we had no food, as the poor administration did not supply the sufficient cheese to bite. We saw many young people here, and particularly active were women. Probably a good sign for this market.
Among pinot and sauvignon blanc wines I tried, Ata Rangi was excellent. More surprisingly, my usual wine shop, Asahiya had a space for tasting and Mr. Kusuda himself was there from Martinborough. He settled in New Zealand 7 years ago to challenge the world-class pinot, and some magazines and TV programs reported him to gain a certain reputation. 2006 pinot has just recently been released, and Kusuda-san helped me taste it. It’s got with dense body this year in my impression. He also had Syrah with the first harvest of his own grapes that was pure and quite clean. This treat alone was definitely worth the fee.

Pleyel and Grotrian –
Esquire Japan version March 2008 was an excellent issue. It featured articles of 300-year piano history in which many pianists appeared, and more pages were dedicated for tracking Glenn Gould’s life. The issue was not limited to classical only, either. It even came with a CD of Chopin’s preludes that compared old and new Pleyel pianos. I instantaneously relate Pleyel with Wanda Landovska who brought the clavecin back to life with them. Pleyel has nobly mild tones unlike Steinway’s metalic sturdiness.
By the way the piano in my home is an upright of Grotrian, a very old piano family in Germany related to Steinway. There was an instrument show in Tokyo in early 80’s where most of renowned pianos gathered, and among them was a very compact piano but with fascinatingly beautiful sound. I immediately fell in love with Grotrian, and I even made a trip all the way to Osaka to visit the importer, Maruichi Piano-Harp Company to look at the products. I remember they also carried Pleyel clavecins in the store. It was impossible for me to do anything with the price of piano over 2 million Yen, but after a few years of patience, my friend Y helped me through his connection with a company in Germany and I ventured to import a Grotrian for myself in 1986. Its logo“Grotrian-Steinweg” is the proof of product for European market.

MacBook Air
It started with a series of painful efforts to deal with a beauty, in this case MacBook Air. I should have understood my partner’s character in advance at least such as getting ready from the beginning with USB-Ethernet adapter, Super drive, USB hub, and an external HDD addition. In my case, transferring the previous environment took impossibly long hours and ate up too much disk space, and I erased everything to restart from the scratch. You shouldn’t depend on the virtual drive anyway. It would be an excellent approach to couple it with a Classical iPod as it needs some external disk space eventually. I found the Mac LAN adapter did not work under Windows, and had to buy another adapter. This relation forces me to spend money. Nonetheless, LED back-lit display is beautiful. It automatically controls the brightness depending on your environment, too.

Le Genmai ends
I introduced Le Genmai just a month ago that was such a nice patisserie, but they suddenly closed the shop. The branch in Tachikawa station will disappear by end March, too. What happened? It is a serious issue to a fan but I could not get any explanation. A poor boulangerie in my neighborhood recently told me pessimistically that they could not get the supply of butter and thus had to stop making pastries.
