I went to Country Farm Tokyo German Village to try some panorama shots of 2 million LED illuminations. The highway bus from Yokohama can be taken at C-18 platform near Sogo Department Store, and it goes through Aqua Line under-water tunnel to Sodegaura Bus Terminal in about 40 minutes quickly.
I walked from the terminal to Sodegaura JR station for about 30 minutes/2.5km, but I lost the way and had to ask some people for the direction. Normally, you only have to transfer to a local bus at the terminal. Anyway, I managed to catch 15:30 complimentary shuttle to the Village, and I was the third passenger.
Deutsches Dorf is just a broad grass field on a hill, nothing else, and the attractions are not so many. There is a rose garden, and also a tangerine farm, although it is hard to find something that are quite German. The illuminations turn on at 16:00, and once it gets dark, the view is quite impressive. You can have a calm promenade amusing your eyes. The admission after 15:00 is 500 Yen.
Going back home, I took bus for Shinagawa from the train station.
eyes on Japanese culture, art, travel and technology in more visible pictures ... and ultimately bike-riding

Rifkin's Bach -
After Messiah, our choir has decided to sing Bach’s cantata No. 80 next year in collaboration with a youth orchestra from Germany as 150th anniversary of Japan-Germany friendship. This cantata is not easy. I used to always gasp with amazement at the acrobatic and entirely melismatic bass singer in the second duet song. Even for the choir, it is not like usual cantatas to handle a short choral only, but the first song is rather long and chromatic. The tenor hits the upper A repeatedly, which is very demanding.
This music I have been listening to for a long time is the CD of Joshua Lifkin and the Bach Ensemble. I had 4 albums that they released through L’Oiseau-Lyre in late 80’s, all of which with the excellent cantatas, and it was such a small ensemble even singing the chorus in solos. Because of it, the parts were exceptionally clear and articulated, and I loved listening to all the 4 CD’s. The pure and neat voice of sopranos still continues to be very charming today.

My Cataract Operation, Act 5
When I went to the hospital for 1-month post-operation checks the other day, I forgot to ask about the certificate I had requested for the purpose of insurance refund. It was actually ready, and I went out today again to pick it up.
At the cashier counter, I was told the fee was $125. I immediately claimed that I thought I saw $35 in the list of fees for various certificates to which the clerk explained me it was for the certificate prepared in the hospital’s own form but in other forms the price was as charged. I would consider it normal if the fee was around $50-60, but if the digit shifts up, It sounds rather pricey for average people, and I felt strongly the life here depended much on how much money in the pocket.
By the way, I discovered that the operation fee using multi-focus lenses covering short and long sights is about $3300, roughly two times of standard single-focus lenses. When I was speaking with the doctor, I found a sheet of tariff on his desk, and I could precisely read the numbers. My visibility was indeed improved!

Just before going to bed late last night, I saw the news of IOS 4.2 update. Waking up at 6:00, the first thing I did was the download. The progress looked rather slow, and I watched it wondering if it was because of the CPU. Then iTunes indicated iPad could be removed as the synchronization was done, and iPad rebooted itself, but it stayed in the booting screen as if frozen. I tried resetting it a few times, with and without connecting it to my iMac, and I realized that it was taking awfully a long time to read the photos in my iPad. In the meantime, iMac's TimeMachine started the backup in the background, so I decided to leave it for a while.
Returning on the machines, I had to reset iPad a few times because iMac popped a warning of synchronization cancellation and also in the first desktop menu my iPad arrived at it did not respond to the touches to the applications except fading the icons. It was past 8:30 when this update was finally completed.
I did not understand how I could take advantage of multi-tasking by a glance, so I thought I would try printing first using AirPrint function. But, gee, it says printer is not found. Checking the info in the net, surprisingly, the function only supports ePrint-capable products, perhaps 3 models by HP only now. I had believed that the printer connected to AirMac or TimeCapsule would be recognized automatically. The interim solution I found was “AirPort Hactivator”. This installations was not equally but still painful and the time it took until the document to be printed was way too long, and seriously I thought it hang up again. I am not sure this is workable as it is…

Tokyo Cathedral and Schütz Choir -
On the 19th, a friend of mine invited me to Schutz Choirs’ Requiem Gathering, and I went to Tokyo Cathedral after a break of a few tens of years. Essentially, I don’t much appreciate this cathedral because the reverbration is excessive and the form of its interior is simply inorganic, but I had heard that they renewed the organ, and I was interested in visiting once again.
The event was annual for the condolence of some people died in the year, and this time Bach’s motet No. 227 “Jesu, meine Freude” was the only familiar music for me. The Choir sang in front of us but the voices cames from all directions with reverbrations, and you might wonder they are up above somewhere. Positively speaking, this sense of floating is a good feature of this cathedral.
The most impressive was Dvorak’s “Bible Songs” for tenor and organ. Zeger Vandersteene looked quite old, but the quality of his voice still belonged to those in the premium class tenors, and the cathedral reverbration was not obtrusive at all in this case.
The new instrument by Mascioni was made in Italy, and it sounded modern in tonality and well balanced from the bottom to the top. The organist, Yuichiro Shiina played Mendelssohn’s sonata No. 1.
Schutz Choir, as I recall it, was steady in their early activity when I was in to the renaissance music in my university days so many years ago at which time Schutz was not a composer widely recognized. Now that Ms.Yumiko Tanno has ceased to conduct the choir, it is nice to note with a respect that she still continues to sing herself today.

Apple’s meaningfully covered ad in their site top page earlier this week saying “tomorrow will be an unforgettable day” was not actually received as exceptionally great day when they started selling Beatles songs in iTunes Store. Apple v.s. Apple Record had a long conflict because of the same name, but they seem to have reached reconciliation.
Let’s check how the market is reacting: In America, I see 4 albums in the top 10 list but all lower in the rank, and they are standard albums such as Abbey Road, White Album, and Sgt. Pepper. In their home country, the wave looks smaller with only 3 albums listed. Unique is Japan where the Box Set sells the most despite the fact that the price of 22,000 yen is almost twice more expensive than USA.

Ultra-light bicycles –
Expanding my bright idea I had during the dark trekking the other day, I investigated if bicycles of 5 kg (11 lbs.) really existed. A product that looked decent was Panasonic Traincle 6000 weighing 6.9 kg with full titanium frame and 14” wheels, but it cost sky-high $4,000! Slightly more affordable was YS-11 Limited for about $1,100 and 7.3kg. Weighing 8.5kg and for only $370 was Renault AL-14FDB that seemed the one to choose under the normal condition. Actually the lightest I found was called A-bike that weighed 5.5kg, but the wheels were too tiny and it did not look so comfortable to ride, and I thought a kick scooter would be even better: Xootr MG for example with only 4.5kg well within the target. Unfortunately, the price in Japan is over $500.

Sobatsubuyama Randonnée
A friend of mine suggested me trekking Sobatsubuyama mountain in Okutama. Originally, the plan was for the next week, but the splendid weather forced us to make a quick decision to visit sooner today. The route was said to be 14kilometers total taking about 7.5 hours, and I hesitatingly thought it was excessive considering my leg condition, but in the end he convinced me as he would manage it being an expert of trekking.
We took 6:50 train from Tachikawa for Okutama in the morning, and then took a bus. We got off at Higashi-Nippara around 8:30. Following the signpost, we went through the small garden of a private house where an old lady lived, and then started the mountain pass. For about an hour, it kept elevating initially in the planted cedar forests, then the view gradually opened up. The rest was such a comfortable walk on the pass mostly flat in the mountain spotting trees here or there in autumnal red color.
Around 11 o’clock in the uphill toward the shack Nagasawa, the tendon in the side of my left knee gradually started expressing difficulty, and I was then dragging the leg. Usually, my right knee is the problem that always cries out in a stressful walk, the thus I guess I balanced to weigh more on my left leg in the climbing today. The pace of uphill/downhill obviously slowed, but still the pass was pretty much flat in the most part, and I did not feel hopeless going forward. We talked to each other how wonderful this trekking route was as we head for the top of Sobatsubuyama.
It was actually past 13:00 when we arrived at the summit. The view was not bad at all though it was not panoramic. We rested there and had lunch. We were late by one hour than planned. We had made roughly the half of the entire route, which meant it would be 18:00 earliest when we finish this whether we went forward or back. “It’s not delighting”, I said to myself.
Steep slopes were painful going down. I tried to avoid bending my left leg, and I had to depend on the poles in both hands like an old man. With much patience, both of us (my friend later confessed me that he felt as if the caddy of a mediocre golf player), we finally arrived at the wide forestry road: the end of the mountain pass at 16:00. It was relieving because the road ahead of us was for vehicles. We saw three deer on the slope that quickly ran away noticing us.
The colors of the surrounding mountains were beautiful as we went down the road, and we even saw Mt. Fuji to our excitement. We thought the road was ideal for a drive for autumn color hunting. Unfortunately the afternoon does not last long enough in this season, and at 17:00 comes the sunset. Afterward, the road was vaguely lit only by the weak moonlight.
It takes 2 hours normally to go through this forestry road, and it is very long. If only the time was earlier by an hour, this would have been a comfortable finish of a randonnée, but one should avoid a walk in the dark. Suppressing the feeling of insecurity, and almost trying to sense things in front invisibly, we continued our walk. I was chewing my bright thought that was to bring nothing but a light, folding bicycle of about 5 kilograms next time I come here to trek, and I can enjoy a fantastic, fast run down on this road. It was 18:30 when we reached the bus stop of Kawanoribashi. If cloudy, this walk would have been hopeless with no light. By the way the gate of this road was closed for general vehicles except for the construction.
Discoveries of a wonderful route of randonnée and a beautiful road to drive for autumn color hunting but not allowed were indeed the achievement of this trekking other than confirming my limitation.

Autumn in Nasu -
My wife's travel friends were to gather in one of the members’ house in Nasu, and I decided to join as part of our 2-day trip to watch autumn colors in Nasu. We luckily found a bargain package of lodging in a tour agent's site that was located next to Nasu Highland Amusement Park. The Pure Cottage (photo 1) was quite satisfying, much more so than our expectation, with 2 bedrooms and a living room with kitchenette, a perfect facility for family tourism, and the entry to the amusement park is waved. The hot springs water was mild in sand color and it contained radon. For the dinner, we chose the Japanese menu, and it was right. They wisely avoided exotic ingredients but prepared very delicious dishes of a Kaiseki course, and considering the overall package price, we could only praise their effort.
We were wondering how this year's autumn leaves look like after the record-breaking hot summer, but we saw some trees with astoundingly red color to amuse our eyes. We had a long walk along the streets of quiet weekend houses up to the area called Forest Hills developed by Tokyo Tatemono (photos 2 & 3).
The following day, we drove all the way of Shiobara hot springs end to end including Momijidani (photo 4), but the mountains looked as if baked more brownish than reddish perhaps because of too hot summer or the best timing comes late this year. As for the red leaves, the road from Minamigaoka Farm to Safari Park in Nasu was more impressive and also no slow traffic.

Messiah as a Hobby

Messiah concert was over quite satisfactorily. I had set the challenge for this year to master this masterpiece of Handel, and I am happy having reached the first summit now. In the beginning, contrasting to over 20 each soprano and alto singers, there were only 3 or 4 tenors whose level was more or less same as myself, and I wondered how this could be practically overcome? When it comes to Messiah, some volunteers always show up as the concert approaches who want to sing on the stage but skipping the lessons. Our choir did not accept them, but a few old members and extra staff were added toward the final stage that really enhanced the ability of singing.
Our concert was uniquely a charity in essence like the concert for Foundling Hospital in 1750 in London that established Messiah’s reputation 10 years late since its debut. Our weekly choir lessons started with a prayer and ended with another prayer. Many members gather here with their religious motivation, and they probably think that performing to praise the Father means the accumulation of virtues by itself. Seeing it from the opposite side, their effort completes there and thus some of choir members did not look much interested in raising the quality of singing. This hurdle may not be a serious issue, but a delicate area to address. Having said this, I think today’s concert was quite well done as a whole. I believe we owe it particularly to the orchestra. The members who gathered for this project were by all means just outstanding, thanks to Conductor Shigemi. I of course reserve my wish to sing with the orchestra of period instruments and with the baroque pitch ideally speaking, but I feel so happy collaborating with this orchestra, which was truly a rare opportunity.
As for me, since I have made this yearlong effort of singing, I seriously wanted to experience the other Messiah in a different way, and it made me to decide traveling to Toronto. I have been chasing Tafelmusik as an excellent baroque orchestra for a while, and about six months ago it came to my attention that they had the annual event called “Sing-along Messiah”. No mileage flights were available around the time I booked the concert tickets, and I had to decide whether I dared to buy the air-tickets or not. My friend in Toronto helped to me in getting a hotel room with a very good deal instead.
Tafelmusik runs Messiah concerts for 4 days until December 18 and the following Sunday matinee is the Sing-Along in which the audience will sing to accompany the orchestra. Toronto Symphony also holds Messiah concerts in parallel for a few days until 20th. It looks like Messiah is all over before Christmas out there, and I don’t know if it is a British style in December traditionally. My travel is compact and rapid for 6 days with 4 nights in Toronto just back and forth. Will anybody join me?

Messiah Rehearsal -
Today’s rehearsal is the only occasion to sing with the orchestra except the day after tomorrow, and it took place in Yodobashi Church where we will have the concert. I was thrilled rather linearly with the fact that I am in the middle of the complete form of the music that I have accumulated in the exercise through the year.
Many members of the orchestra gathered were young players, and I enjoyed the small ensemble that was nice and agile. I was seated just behind the second oboe, and the melodies woven by two oboes were within my arm’s reach, which was exciting. The harpsichord was also close next to oboe on the left. And the last but not the least was the amazing trumpet that totally knocked me out. The bass aria “The trumpet shall sound” will be definitely an attraction in the concert. From my seat, the oboe goes along the trumpet like a clear shadow, and I felt as if I was in the ideal spot for listening.
I recognize the first note of No. 46 for the chorus from the first notes of the orchestra, but for some reason of perhaps playing, the harmony did not reach me to result in a hard start of singing. The organ for basso continuo was also in the orchestra, but I did not hear it clearly, either.
As I could sing Messiah throughout without being exhausted, I was satisfied with this rehearsal. The concert will start from 13:30 Wednesday.
