サラゴサは12世紀レコンキスタでアラゴン王国がイスラムから奪回した首都で、さすがに大きな街だ。ここは古代ローマ、イスラム、ユダヤ、キリスト教など様々な文化が融合し、ムデハル様式と呼ばれる建築群が立ち並ぶことで知られている。繁華街の中心部、サウセ･ホテル(€49)に宿を取った我々はまずピラール広場の周囲の教会などを見て回る。この周辺ではラ・セオと呼ばれるカテドラル（サルバドール大聖堂）が一番見応えがあり立派な教会だと思うが、教会内は撮影禁止だった。今回の旅行でも素晴らしい教会で写真不可の場所がいくつかあった。夜は近くのバル・レストランで記憶に残る一つ星の味を楽しんだ→別稿参照。

翌日は夕方の列車まで時間があり、何はともあれアルハフェリア宮殿でイスラムの精緻な造形美を楽しむことにする。もちろんその極致を堪能したければアルハンブラに行けということなのだが、ここでもその片鱗は充分に楽しめる。ここは一般の入場料€5を払ったが、帰りにシニアが€1だったのを見つけ相棒が入口で強気に申し出をしてみたら難なく差額を返却してくれた。スペインではパスポートなどの提示を求めて事実確認をすることが多い。（5月6日）

Zaragoza is a large city because it has been the capital of Aragon kingdom since it was recovered from Islam reign in the 12^th century Reconquista. Variety of cultures such as Roman, Islamic, Jewish and Christian are mixed here and its unique architectural style is known as mudéjar. We stayed at Sauce Hotel (€49) in the middle of busy downtown, and looked around Plaza Pilar. We thought La Seo was most magnificent in the area but no photos were allowed inside the cathedral. We had a memorably wonderful dinner in a single-star restaurant nearby in the evening.

The next day, we had plenty of time until late afternoon train, and we visited Palacio de la Aljaferia looking for fine beauty of Islamic architecture. When it comes to a complete version of this kind, one would be suggested to go to Alhambra, but this Palacio is quite enjoyable. We paid the admission of €5 but found the fee for seniors was €1 as we go out, and my partner courageously stated it at the entrance. The result was a smooth refund of €4!

西班牙歩きの旅#2 - Javier

朝、パンプローナの駅まで歩いて行き、窓口でサラゴサ行きの切符を買おうとしたら今日の午前の列車は席がないよと言われ、辛うじて取れたのは午後2時半。特急券の購入を甘く見ていた。5時間どうして潰そうかと途方に暮れるところだったが、相棒が機転を利かせ客待ちタクシーの運転手にハビエル城までいくらで往復ツアー出来るか交渉してみた。団体ツアーでもないと個人では行きづらいところだが、車なら片道1時間ちょっとの距離なので、110€に値切って交渉成立。道中、遙か遠くにピレネーの山並みも目にすることが出来て満足感に満たされる気分。

ハビエル城は一番近くの街sanguesaから登りが始まり、数キロ山の中に車を走らせる。朝一番ということもあって、まだ訪れる者も誰ひとりいない静けさの中に佇む古城だ。城は開館少し前だったが、建物の近くまで行くとここで布教活動を支えているふたりの女性に偶々会えて、あれこれ親しく説明をしてもらうことが出来た。小さなチャペルからは神父さんも出てきて挨拶をした。これだけの敷地を所有していた地主家系は何が収入源だったのかと聞くと羊とのことだった。ザビエルは同じくバスク人のイグナシオ･デ･ロヨラに大きく影響を受け、イエズス会で伝道を生涯の職務とするに至ったのだが、館内でも日本語オーディオ･ガイドでその説明がある。

実はこのツアーにはひとつ驚きのおまけがあった。タクシー運転手がこれまたバスク人で、その名もフランシスコ･ザビエルさんだったのだ。うれしくなって、我々は城を背景に記念撮影をした。（5月5日）

We walked to the station to find that the train tickets to Zaragoza for the morning were all sold out and that the earliest available would be 14:30. We seem to be too optimistic about the express tickets. In order to kill 5 remaining hours, my travel partner cleverly negotiated a possible tour to Javier castle with a taxi driver, a destination not normally efficient for individual travelers unless you are in a group tour bus. It is about an hour drive by car distancewise, therefore we concluded the deal at €110. We could see Pyrenee mountains far beyond on our way, which was really satisfying.

Once we got to Sanguesa, the closest town, the road started climbing up for a few kilometers into a hill. It was still early in the morning and there were no other visitors where the castle was quietly standing. It was before the opening time, but we luckily met with two ladies supporting religeous activities here who gave us kind explanations about the castle. Then came the Father to greet us. Francisco Xavier (Javier) received significant influence from de Loyola, also a Basque, to choose a lifelong comittment to missonary in foreign countries including Japan. The museum’s audio guide explains this even in Japanese language.

One surprising bonus of our tour was the taxi driver himself who was also a Basque, and his name was Francisco Xavier!

西班牙歩きの旅#1 - Pamplona

ビルバオで旅の相棒と合流したものの、グッゲンハイム美術館はがっかりだった。建物は斬新だとしても、見るべき中身が常設などないし、我々が訪れた時期はオノ・ヨーコ展をやっていた。そんな落胆を後にバスでパンプローナに移動した。ここは我々にとっては巡礼路への入口で、元々は自転車ツアーの起点と考えていた街だ。宿は旧市街にあるメゾナーヴェ(€78)、そこから我々はまずサンフェルミン祭りの牛追いルートを確認してみることにした。スピードが出過ぎないよう緩やかな登りのルートを賢く選んでいる。散策の足を伸ばして城門の外まで出ると、ピレネー越えを果たした巡礼者が疲れた足取りで街に入って来るのが見える。ヘミングウェイが一躍有名にしたこの街は多くの観光客を引き寄せているが、我々には特段思い入れはないので、街を一巡りしたら翌日は鉄道でサラゴサに向かう計画を組んでいる。それでもライトアップされた市庁舎はなかなか見事だった。相棒が繁華街に中華料理店を見つけて、今夜は中華にしようと突然言い出したので、まあ良いかと階段を上がる。ドアが閉まっていて開店しているとは思えないが、ノブを回して開けると閑散とした店は営業中だった。食事の内容は割愛するが、勘定の清算をした時、お釣りの20数€に我々が出した50€札も付けて戻って来た。そのまま退席も出来たのだが、巡礼者となった今ここは功徳を積んでおこうかと、改めてそのお札を店の親父に「お釣りが多いのはうれしいけど」とからかいながら突き出した。階段を下りて行くと背後から声がかかる。相棒がバックを席に忘れたのを持って店のスタッフが追っかけてきたのだ。これでお相子だ。（5月4日）

I met with my travel partner in Bilbao as scheduled. We were frankly disappointed with Guggenheim Museum apart from its architecture because they did not have their own arts for permanent exhibition therefore constantly relied on their invitation projects, and they had Yoko Ono when we arrived.

So we left for Pamplona on bus. It was the city for us to encounter with the way to Compostela and originally had planned to start a bike tour. Our hotel, Maisonnave (€78) was conveniently in the old city area, and we first looked around examining the exact route of bulls in San Fermin. Extending our walk to the castel gate, we could see some pilgrims finishing their trip from SJPP across Pyrenee. They surely looked tired.

We were not particularly interested in relating this town with Hemingway unlike many tourists here, and thus we scheduled to leave for Zaragoza next morning after a quick sightseeing in the afternoon. Still, the lit-up city hall in the evening was very charming.

My partner suddenly said let’s have chinese tonight as he noticed a restaurant sign in a busy street, and we went up the stairs. The metal door was shut and the place did not look open, but turning the knob to push the door, was there the almost vacant restaurant. I will skip what we ate, and while we checked the bill, the restaurant’s old man, seemingly the landlord, brought the change of 20 some Euros as well as a €50 bill we gave. Lucky treat, but since we starts a pilgrimage here, it would probably a good thing to accumulate a virtuous deed now. So we tossed the bill again to the man with a smile of appreciating their treat. As we go downstairs followed a voice behind us. It was a staff of restaurant to catch us up holding a bag: My partner forgot it in his chair. So this was a break-even deal.

巡礼路リュックの中身 – Inside the backpack on Pilgrimage

準備を始めるにあたり、巡礼路を複数回歩いた経験者の友人に注意点やTIPSを聞いた。例えば、縄張り意識旺盛な番犬と睨み合いになるので杖は持っていた方が良いとか、その日の食料はスーパーで調達すれば良いがパン屋は日曜には閉まっているとか、持ち歩く飲み水は1ℓで充分とか、巡礼宿に早く着けば一番良い場所のベッドが取れるし、シャワーもお湯が切れることなくゆっくり使える等、様々な有益情報を入手できたが、荷物については重さ5kgを目標にするよう言われた。それで僕は荷物のリストアップと計量を始めたのだが、5kgはどうも現実には厳しい目標値だ。

まず手元にある約1.3kgのリュックに替えて、30ℓ近い容量でとにかくもっと軽い製品を捜すことにし、Deuter Spider 30(820g)とモンベル・ガレナパック30(760g)が共に価格的にも手頃な候補として上ったが、東急ハンズの店頭でArc’Teryx Mantis 26に遭遇し、アウトドアっぽくないスッキリしたデザインと濃い緑色に惹かれて、普段使いも考えこれに決めた。重量は公称820gに対して実測890gとやや残念な結果だったが、製品的には3つのポケットの収まり具合に満足している。容量が26ℓと小さいので荷物を割り切る必要があり、それもあってシュラフについては消費増税前の3月中に買うつもりでいたモンベルの#5ダウン430gの製品は諦めることにした。僕と違って、巡礼宿に宿泊することが多い友人はその上位モデルを早々と購入。

しかしそれでも巡礼宿が2-3泊予定にあればベッドシーツは必要と言われていて、これはモンベルや豪州ブランドのCocoonが定番化しているようで、コットンシーツは3千円台、但し重さはシュラフと大差ない400g、シルクシーツなら150gくらいに収まるもののコストが1万円近い。ネットであれこれ調べた結果、マイナーだと思うがニュージーランドのJagbagsというメーカーの製品を見つけた。スタンダードサイズ・シルク白色の基本モデルは120g、英国からの取り寄せで£26プラス送料£6だ。この製品のウェブページでは虫除け効果を謳っていたが、その理屈については不明。織りが細かくて虫も入り込みにくいとか？Cocoonの場合は繊維に植物から抽出した防虫成分を織り込んでいる。

荷物ひとつひとつの重さについてここまで神経を使うのは初めてだが、近年の装備面での進化がそれに応えてくれるのを実感する。杖についても軽量のTグリップが200g前後でちょうど良さそうと考えたが、巡礼者がちょっと目を離したすきにステッキを盗まれたという複数の書き込みを見て、わざわざこちらから目立ちそうな新兵器を持ち込まずとも現地で普通の巡礼杖でも必要なら買えば良かろうと見送ることにする。盗みと言えば僕はスリ被害の経験もあるので欧州行きに際し今回はグラミチパンツのポケットにボタンを付けてみた。念のため。

食料について、経験者の友人は山歩き派なので、昼は持ち歩きのパン、ハム、チーズくらいで済ませ、夜も巡礼宿で自炊するなど、かなりストイックな旅をしているが、僕らの旅はもっと身軽に道中のバルで軽いランチをすれば荷物も少なくて済むと考えた。

カメラに関してはコンデジで済ませるつもりでいたが、バイクに乗ることもなくなったのでリコーGXR持参に格上げし、レンズ共々リュックではなくウェストポーチに詰め込むことにした。これは別口で1kg超となる。

A friend of mine gave me a few cautions and tips regarding the travel on the pilgrim road as he is experienced a couple of time. For example, you should have a stick as you might face with dogs that are keen about their territory; supermarkets are most convenient for collecting food for the day but it should be noted that bakeries are closed on Sundays; 1 littre water per day should be sufficient; the earlier you get to an albergue, the luckier you would be to get a nicer bed as well as sufficient hot water in the bathroom. Those are good things to know in advance. He also suggested to limit the luggage weight within 5kg, and I looked into my stuff listing them up with each weight to find 5kg was actually a tough goal.

My current rucksack wighs roughly 1.3kg, and I started a research for a lighter alternative with 30 litter capacity. The candidates are Deuter Spider 20 (820g) and Montbell Galena Pack 30 (760g) with relatively reasonable price tag on them. Then I came across with Arc’Teryx Mantis 26 in Tokyu Hands store and was totally attracted with its design unlike outdoor equipment in deep green color. They claimed 820g weight, but I measured it 890g at home which was a bit unfortunate. I still love the layout of the main compartment and three auxiliary pockets. Its capacity is limited to 26 litters which forced me to give up a down sleeping bag I was intending to buy in March before the consumption tax was raised. My partner bought one as he walks more and stays at albergues more often.

Still remained was the suggestion to have a box-shaped bed sheet if I stay in albergues 2 or 3 nights. This wasn’t easy because the cheaper cotton sheet weighs over 400g that almost matches with a sleeping bag while the lighter silk sheet of around 150g is unaffordable expensive. The solution I found was Jagbags, a New Zealander company whose basic, white silk sheet was £26 plus £6 shipping. They claim anti-insect feature in their web page but no mechanism is explained. Probably too fine for insects to invade through? In case of Cocoon liners, they contain herbal essence in the fabrique for protection.

I have never paid so much attention to the weight of each thing in my bag. I can at least feel the technology advancement in doing so. A good example is the stick. The photo shows a light T-grip model of about 200g, but I read in the net a few pilgrims had their stick stolen while they failed to keep an eye on it, and I thought it might not be a good idea to bring in the latest and flashy weapon. Instead, I could buy an ordinary wooden pilgrim stick locally if necessary. Talking about the theft, once being a victim of pick-pocket myself, I put a button on the pocket of Gramicci pants in preparation for Europe (as in the photo).

Regarding food, the expert friend always carried bread, hum and cheese for lunch just like usual trekking, and even cook the supper for himself in albergues. In stead of such a stoic travel, we lean toward a more relaxed mode dropping in a bar or a café to have light lunch, thus can reduce the load on our shoulders.

As I gave up the bike ride, I am inclined to bring my Ricoh GXR camera with another lens as it is definitely more appropriate than an ordinary, compact alternative. A separate waist bag is for them: Another 1kg addition.

岡田美術館と歌麿 - Utamaro and Okada Museum

強羅の岡田美術館まで出掛けて、歌麿の「深川の雪」を観て来た。幅3.4mの巨大な肉筆画と聞いていたが、想像していたよりは小振りの作品だった。歌麿の筆致はさて置き、ややくすんだ青が主体の色彩は豪華さの点では恐らく米国にある「吉原の花」に譲るのではないかという印象だった。

それよりもあっけに取られたのはこの美術館そのもので、日本絵画は蒼々たる日本画家の名が並ぶ。展示作品でその腕前にみとれてしまう絵師は、個人的には、尾形光琳･酒井抱一･鈴木其一及び守一父子・伊藤若冲・喜多川歌麿・葛飾北斎・上村松園・小林古径・橋本雅邦などなど。先日観た院展100周年特別展よりも充実感を覚えたくらいだ。

今回の特別展には北斎春画もあり、このテーマは今年始めの芸術新潮でもイギリスの展覧会に関する特集記事が組まれていたくらいだから注目度もあるのだろう。大胆且つ大らかに男女が交わる図がわずか数点だが、うっかり素通りして入口を見落としそうな小部屋に控えめな展示がされていた。

この美術館のもうひとつの柱が東洋陶磁器のコレクションで、紀元前10数世紀（殷の時代）の細密模様が施された「饕餮文方罍」なる青銅器にまず息を飲んだあと、清朝の景徳鎮を中心に野々村仁清、尾形乾山など網羅された器を次から次へと観ていくのは大仕事だ。僕は乾山作の複数の角皿が最も強く印象に残ったが、これらはカタログには収録されていなかった。鍋島焼もこれまでまとまって鑑賞したことがなく興味深かった。

これら厖大なコレクションが一個人の蒐集で、それだけでこんな美術館が出来てしまうとは、一体何者なのかと調べて見ると、パチンコ、スロットマシン・メーカーで業界の王として君臨する岡田和生氏がそれもわずか15年くらいかけて蒐集したものらしい。美術館は昨年10月のオープンで、入場料は2800円と普通の約2倍もするので、入口で「えっ？」と聞き返す訪問客が少なくない。屋外の足湯スポットからは風神雷神図の大パノラマが眺められる趣向で、これは開館に合わせて会場へのアプローチを飾るオブジェとして組み上げられた75cm角パネル640枚構成の福井江太郎の作品。

I went to Hakone to see Utamaro’s “Snow in Fukagawa” in Okada Museum in Gohra. The recently rediscovered ukiyoe painting was said to be large with 3.4 meter width, but it did not actually look so large as I had expected. Apart from Utamaro’s detail touch, its dominant color was rusty blue, and from the viewpoint of colorful gorgeousness, I guess “Flowers in Yoshiwara” now in Connecticut might be superior.

More striking was the museum itself to me. Renowned names in Japanese drawing history lined up here, and going through the works on display, I would highlight Korin Ogata, Hoitsu Sakai, Kiitsu and Morikazu Suzuki, Jakuchu Itoh, Utamaro Kitagawa, Hokusai Katsushika, Shoen Uemura, Kokei Kobayashi, Gaho Hashimoto, and so on for their exceptional skill of drawing.

This special exhibition also includes Hokusai’s pornographic Ukiyoe on display. The “Shunga”(porn Ukiyoe) may be generally topical today as a theme observing it was the feature article in Geijutsu Shincho art magazine earlier this year focusing on the exhibition in London. Anyway, a few pictures of a couple’s moment of bold and open intercourse were shown in a smallish room somewhat hesitantly whose entrance could be easily overlooked if you are less attentive.

The other core of the museum is the collection of Asian porcelain and ceramics. One would first of all gasp with the minute and precise patterns on more than 30-century old Chinese bronze pot, then follows the huge collection mainly focused on Jingdezhen in Qing dynasty as well as Japanese masterpieces of Ninsei Nonomura and Kenzan Ogata. It will be a hard work for visitors to go through all these. I was most impressed with the square plates by Kenzan which were not included in the published catalog book unfortunately.

This huge collection in the whole museum is purely private by a single individual, and my automatic question was “who is he?” Mr. Kazuo Okada is the owner of a “pachinko” and slot-machine manufacturer and reputed as the King of the gamble world who started collecting arts some 15 years ago. The museum opened last October. The admission fee is 2800 Yen, which is rather high, twice higher than typical fees, that makes some visitors utter “what?” at the ticket counter.

Outside of the museum building was the area with foot-warmer hotspring pool where you can enjoy the panoramic view of “Wind God, Thunder God” through the glass wall. It is composed of 640 brass gilt panels of 2.5 feet length each by Kohtaro Fukui for the opening of the museum.

巡礼路の計画は練り直し – Replanning of Pilgrim Road to Compostela

膝の怪我からほぼ2ヶ月経過、しかし完治には未だ程遠い。先月、MRIを撮ってより詳しい検査を受けたところ、靱帯だけでなく半月板にも傷と思われる箇所が認められた。確かに痛めていた靱帯は直りつつあるように感じるのだが、それとは別にお皿の付近で不調が残っている。そんなわけで旅行前のリハビリもままならず、こんな状態では計画通りの旅行にメドも立たず、巡礼路をレンタルバイクで走る計画は断念、終盤の行程についても友人が歩くのを路線バスで追うのが関の山と、構想そのものの見直しを迫られることになった。

旅行が観光主体の普通の姿になるのは仕方ないことで、パンプローナからブルゴスまでのバイク区間については、パンプローナからサラゴサに足を伸ばし、ログローニュではリオハのワイナリー巡りを組み込み、ブルゴスに向かう。ワイナリーのあるアーロまではログローニュから片道44kmなのでここを日帰りサイクル･ツアーするというのは距離的には達成可能で、何かあっても往復路という安心感に心が動いたが、やはり自重して路線バスでのんびり遊ぶことを選んだ。

レオンからは交通機関が把握できなくて完全に巡礼路から外れる方向に一時は傾いたのだが、地元の路線バスが巡礼路の大半を併走している情報が見つかったのを基に、最終プランはモンフォルテ・デ・レモスからバスでサリア入りして、友人にはそこを起点に歩き始めてもらうことにした。サリアへは北側のルーゴからも入れ、その方が効率的だと思うが、むしろ鉄道で南の渓谷沿いを走りモンフォルテ・デ・レモスのパラドールに宿泊という選択の方が魅力的に感じた。僕は基本的にサリアからバスを乗り継いでサンチャゴを目指すわけだが、2日目のポルトマリンからパラス・デ・レイの区間にはバスがなく、ここの24.5kmについては自分も1日では無理だとしても2日かければ何とかなりそうと、巡礼路を歩きたい未練に少しだけ応える計画にした。

こうして約3週間に及ぶ旅行をキャリー･オンのリュックのみという巡礼路歩き仕様の軽装備で旅支度することとなる。（続く）

2 months past since my knee injury, and it still looks like a long way ahead till full recovery. In the end of March, I had the knee further examined in detail through MRI scanning to confirm that the injury was actually not only the ligament but also slightly in semi-lunar cartilage. I feel the ligament is improving recently but some uncomfortable sense resides around the knee cup. Such being the circumstances, I have not started any rehabilitation exercise before the trip and the plan itself looked unrealistic, therefore I’ve given up the idea of running the Camino on a bike. As for the walking toward the end of the route, I could probably and merely follow my friend using buses that run along the Camino.

It is inevitable to modify the whole trip into an ordinary form with more sight-seeing spots. For Pamplona to Burgos which was originally the bike part, I added Zaragoza to visit and one-day tour to Rioja wineries from Logroño. The wineries in Haro is about 44km away, and the distance could be manageable on bike, but I chose relaxing bus ride to avoid the risk.

I thought of a completely independent trip of my friend as I was unable to get the information of local buses along the Camino, but eventually found the buses run mostly in parallel. Our final plan is to pick Sarria as the start point, getting in from Monforte de Lemos on bus. Lugo in the north may be more efficient, but I thought it more attractive to take a southbound train along the river and stay in a parador in Monforte de Lemos. Basically, I will rely on buses from Sarria to Santiago, but the second day section between Portomarin and Palas de Rei has no buses, and I may have to walk this 24.5km possibly in 2 days if not in a day.

This tour continues for 3 weeks and I started preparing my luggage that is simply a light backpack only! And that suits the pilgrimage outfit.

世紀の日本画特別展 - Special Nihonga Exhibition

院展100年の特別展も終盤に近い昨日上野の東京都美術館に行った。入口には高齢者の長蛇の列、なぜなら第三水曜日は65歳以上が入場無料なのだ。誰しも考えることは同じ、老人パワー恐るべしだ！

行列に並ぶこと30分強、会場内もそこそこの混雑であまり立ち止まらないで俯瞰するように回って約30分。大家の作品が並んでいるものの、日本画にのめり込むほど詳しくない僕の眼では「これぞ」という名作は少ないかな。

収穫は片岡珠子が歌川国芳を題材に描いた小屏風絵、「面構」シリーズの1作品を見られたこと。強い色彩とダイナミックさに惹き込まれる。中島清之の「緑扇」も魅力的だった。

A special exhibition of Japanese paintings  celebrating 100-year "Inten" history is coming to its end soon, and I paid a visit to Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno yesterday. There was a huge line of people, mostly aged, because the admission was  free for seniors on third Wednesdays. It took me more than 30 minutes waiting, and another 30 minutes cruising in relatively crowded floors. The exhibition covered many famous names, but there were not many great masterpieces of each painter to my eye, not knowing Japanese paintings in depth.

The most exciting experience though was "Tsuragamae" by Tamako Kataoka, a small 4-sided screen treating Kuniyoshi Kitagawa as a subject. Her dynamic touch and intense colors were truly attractive. 

今のフクシマ - Fukushima Now

今のフクシマは欧州からどう見えているのか、ということで最近のドイツZDFとフランスFR3のふたつのテレビ番組をfacebook経由で見た。家族の中に原爆犠牲者を持つヒロシマ育ちという生い立ちもあって、僕は発電と言えども原子力に対しては懐疑的だ。フクシマの悲劇を見て即座にそれがヒロシマの被曝と同質だと理解した。この3年間の経緯を見て、プロメテウスの火はとりわけ楽観主義で浅知恵の猿には触らせてはならないという思いがより強い確信に変わった。原子力村の台頭を封じ込め、経済のために詭弁を弄し続ける勢力を許容しないためには、ここで提起されている問題意識と視点をより多くの政治家やメディアとともにシェアする必要があると思う。

How does Fukushima look like from Europe today? These recent TV programs by German ZDF and French FR3 touched the depth of the truth. Having grown up in Hiroshima as a child in “hibakusha” family, I have inherent skepticism in any nuclear power, and I immediately understood the tragedy of Fukushima was an exact overlay of the experience of Hiroshima. In the past three years, I have gained more solid feeling that the Prometheus fire must be kept from maneuvers by incompetent apes. Unless majority of politicians (as well as media and citizens) share the views through logical thought process like these programs, it would be impossible to control the influence of the nuke school monster that is gradually recovering the power.

Chagall in Shizuoka - 静岡のシャガール展

前回のシャガール展はメトロポリタン歌劇場での「魔笛」の舞台デザインをテーマに東京芸大美術館で開催されたのを観たが、とても印象が強かったせいか、もう3年以上も前なのにそんな昔という気がしない。今回はそのメトロポリタンやオペラ･ガルニエでの作業がクローズ･アップされているようなので、これは続きとして外せないと僕は思っていた。去年、広島まで観に行くことはさすがに無理だったが、年が明けて静岡に巡回してくれて幸いだった。

鎌倉から各駅を乗り継いで3時間あまり、久しぶりの静岡駅前は様変わりしていた。美術館は通りを隔てた向かいに見える。

Previous Chagall exhibition that I went was at Museum of Tokyo Institute of Arts focusing on his stage design works for Magic Flute at Metropolitan Opera House. It was already over 3 years ago, but I can’t believe it was such a long time ago because I was so excited with the exhibition. Now that the new exhibition appears to feature the works in Opera Garnier as well as Met’s, I can’t absolutely pass it. The exhibition actually went to Hiroshima last year, too far for me, but it came luckily to Shizuoka this year.

So I took local trains from Kamakura that took more than 3 hours, and I found the area has been completely changed in so many years since I visited last. The museum is in the building across the street in front of the station.

今回のテーマは絵画のキャンバスを超えて壁画、天井、ステンドグラス、タペストリーなど、大空間を演出するシャガールの作業を網羅したようで、その反面ひとつひとつの要素についての展示や掘り下げは小規模に止まっていたように感じた。例えばロンゴスの「ダフニスとクロエ」はオペラ座公演に関連して衣装展示があったが、肝心のリトグラフは少数の持ち込みでお茶を濁していた。このシャガール展のこけら落としになった北海道立近代美術館では所有の全作品を展示したのだろうか。オペラ座の天井画は下絵の展示が3種類ほどあって作曲者名などの書き込みを見比べたりして楽しめた。もちろんフランスの作曲家を多く揃えているのだが、「魔笛」と「白鳥の湖」については題名の書き込みがあり、「ボリス・ゴドノフ」もそうだが、シャガールのそれらへの心酔ぶりの表れなのかも知れない。

The main theme for this exhibition was Chagall’s efforts decorating large public spaces such as concert halls,  stained glasses in church and tapestries beyond painting canvases. This wider coverage on the other hand seemed limiting the focus on each element in displays. One example would be the famous “Daphnis et Chloé” by Longos. There were costumes in display related to the performance in l’Opéra Garnier, but the core lithograph oeuvre only covered a few. The tour of this exhibition started in Hokkaido where the museum possesses the complete work, and I wonder if they displayed the whole oeuvre there? I was most interested in 3 different sketches of Opera Garnier’s ceiling in which I could see the name of composers. Most of them were French naturally while “Magic Flute” and “Swan Lake” titles were spelled out in French that might indicate Chagall’s indulgence to them. “Boris Godunov” was another title shown.

GPSマップのGalileo

自転車や旅目的の地図閲覧にGarmin 800が欲しいとずっと思いつつ、出費が馬鹿にならないのでここまで手を出さないでiPhoneを活用してきた。今回の旅でも巡礼路のルートマップとナビをどうするか決めなくてはならないのだが、普段使っているルートラボ、DIY GPS、Cyclemeterなどはいずれも期待できない。理由のひとつは海外地図へのアクセスと入手性。地図があっても海外で常時ローミングして地図表示したら厖大な通話料の心配がある。そこで必要条件を整理してみると、

1.   オフライン地図を使ってGPSでの位置表示をする

2.   自分が作ったルートを地図上に表示できる

3.   8時間程度の動作維持が可能

まず上記条件に叶うIOSのアプリを探し直してみたのだが、Galileoというオフライン地図アプリに行き着いた。地図の細かさについてはGoogleマップには及ばずかなり大まかという印象だが、GPXファイルにしたルートを読み込んで表示させる世界各地の地図が手に入る。街中では場所捜しに困ることもなさそうだ。

自作のルートについてはStravaサイトで新たにルート作成機能が登場し、世界中のどこでもサイクリングとウォーキングに区分けしてGPXファイルとして保存可能になった。これを出力して、Galileoに読み込ませれば良い。

もうひとつの懸案、電池の持ちについては、iPad miniというのがひとつの選択だろう。地図の閲覧は楽だし、10時間くらいの使用は見込める。でも僕は第1世代iPadに愛想を尽かせて手放したので、買い直す必要がある。もうひとつの選択は単純にiPhoneのままで補充電池を持参という妥協案だ。こちらは自転車での使用に有利。取り敢えず、脚が治ったらGalileo上の日本地図でテスト走行してみようと思う。

Garmin 800 has long been on my shopping list for map viewing in travels as well as bike riding, but its cots has just prevented me to date with the option of iPhone as a practical alternative. For the forthcoming trip of pilgrimage, I need to decide what to do with route maps and navigation since none of Route Lab, DIY GPS or Cyclemeter that I now use suit for the purpose. The primary reason is the availability and accessibility of overseas maps. If I keep loaming to refresh the map on display, the phone cost could be enormous outside Japan. The criteria would be something like those listed below:

1.   To display the location with GPS on a offline map

2.   Ability of showing the route I created on the map

3.   Roughly 8 hours of operating time

I did the research of IOS apps that satisfied the above requirements from the scratch again, and came across with Galileo Offline Maps. The preciseness of maps cannot rival with that of Google Maps with a quick look, but it would be sufficient for finding a specific destination in towns. The real advantage is the ability of loading GPX files on variety of available maps of the world to view routes.

As for my own particular routes, Strava site now features a new function of creating routes under the definition of cycling or walking and output them as GPX files. The rest is to load them in Galileo application.

Another concern of mine is the battery life, and one ultimate answer would be iPad that is ideal for map viewing and allows 10 hours operation time. I was actually frustrated with the first generation iPad and gave it up, and thus I need to buy the new one for this approach. Another answer is simply to stick with the current iPhone but carry an external battery, this can probably extend the operation to 5-6 hours and advantageous in bike running. I will experiment it upon the recovery of my knee using a domestic map.
