Small Organizer -

My KNOXBRAIN organizer has got tired for years of use, and as I am no longer writing down plenty of information in it, I decided to switch to a smaller one. First of all in my search, I encountered with Franklin Covey. The line-up of refills was excellent but the size was a little too large, so I played with its PC trial version for a while. Electronic data was a definite advantage, but its business seemed shrinking with PC version only and none for PDA’s. I would go for it if it were for iPhones or iTouch. In auctions, I saw Montblanc and Coach organizers, over $200 and $50 respectively, but I passed them. The one I finally chose was Ashford, classic in Japan, with a large, versatile pocket just like a wallet.

Home-made cookies

Mr. N visited me from Roppongi with packs of home-made cookies. Small and pretty companion to my tea. His wife sometimes teaches desert-cooking to neighbors, a voluntary professional at home, she sounds like. We briefly discussed business and a few topics of CES in Las Vegas that I happily declined to visit this year. On leaving, he said that he found a good place and thus we should go there next time. “It’s French in Osaki.” Where would it be?

Tokyo Mid Town –

A friend of mine who walked from Le Puy through Santiago de Compostela for 45 days last spring told me about a photo galary of pilgrimage by Sanjiro Minamikawa, so I went to see it to Tokyo Mid Town in Roppongi. He also commented that the professional was amazing to capture the exact attributes of the experience, and because I have been envying his travel for last several months, the pictures of these monuments were a bit exciting.

Tokyo Mid Town is also a new shopping mall. In comparison to Omotesando Hills, it has plenty of wooden finish and is much more spacious to make the shopping promenade comfortable and relaxing. Also interesting to me was several Japanese shops to attract foreign visitors and also many unfamiliar brands from the world, mostly high profile.

My another goal was not accomplished which was 21-21 Design Site with no exhibition. Issei Miyake is the key concept planner and Tadao Ando is the architect of this museum. I could only see Ando’s roof, and it was not attractive enough.

Japanese Dining at Higuchi -

Dinner at Higuchi in Jingumae. This Japanese restaurant may be characterized for an “at-home” atmosphere. From the counter of 5 seats, all the progress of the chef Higuchi and a young assistant in the kitchen is visible in front of you. The dishes are prepared with great care and very enjoyable. They appear to me more like an ultimate extension of home cooking rather than florishing dinner.
The most impressive in this evening were crab meat, a barbecued slice of fish, and also fried Ebi-imo (shrimp-potato?) which was tasty, hot and mushy inside. We were the last to leave, and Higuchi-san the chef kindly handed us a pack of snapper rice-balls. It was a pleasing occasion and the cost for two of us including 1.5 bottles of Sake was 30,000 Yen. In this neighborhood is my favorite French restaurant, L’Artemis Pétillante by the way.

Surround Sound Reference DVD Disc – AES Japan

2 years’ effort has now been accomplished. Mick Sawaguchi gathered serious “surround boys” from the broadcasters and the industry as a study group under AES Japan to make an academic approach to the quality and performance of surround recordings. An orchetral performance was recorded in Osaka in September 2006 with various microphone settings and mixed into DVD-Video and DVD-Audio discs. It is very interesting to hear subtle difference in each mic arrangement of an identical performance. Some had deeper perspective toward the back while others indicated more spaciousness in the dimension of width. A series of listening tests were conducted in Tokyo, Osaka and Vienna to run a follow-up subjective evaluation and its full report is included. If you love “Le Nozze di Figaro” or “Heidenröslein”, this comparison may be interesting just to listen. “Wellington’s Victory” has the arrangement of a banda representing the battle, and you can hear it from left-back. A regular DVD player works for Disc-1 but you need a DVD-Audio player to play Disc-2 which is now a difficult thing to find since this format is diminishing.

Oakley - My new glasses

Haruki Murakami, “What I talk when I talk about running”:
I bought this book issued last fall and it took 3 days for me to finish it in the commuting train. I am never a serious book-reader but somehow keep reading Murakami’s novels nearly 30 years since his first book“Hear the Wind Sing”. His obscure and inert expression is unique which is far remote from my own character, but I can absorb such mentality quite naturally. It may well be because I belong to the same age group. For me placed on the top among his works are “Wild Sheep Chase” and “Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World” enchanted with his story-telling talent of a metaphysical fable, and in parallel his short stories and travel essays were very charming.

As a runner or athlete, Haruki Murakami’s physical ability is outstanding to such mediocres as myself although he keeps explaining humbly about himself in the book. Starting this year, very far behind him but I will conciously stretch and exercise using “Tarzan” magazine as my reference (bought at the same time with Murakami’s novel).
And by the way, Happy Birthday, Haruki!

Mikimoto and TOD'S -

The impression or the vision of a building, once encountered, is sometimes too powerful to be erased from your brain, and for me the most distinguished example is Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. For a recent while in Tokyo, two buildings that happened to reside in my mind are Mikimoto Ginza 2 and TOD’S Omotesando.
I saw TOD’S for the first time in the spring last year when I had a chance to work in Omotesando Hills. Two buildings had no connection each other without specific knowledge about them, but each revealed masculin v.s. féminin atmosphere and overlapped in me just like an intimate couple. I learned very recently that they were designed by the same architect, Toyoo Itoh. My favorite Tadao Ando’s style is always almost purely functional, and in contrast, what’s fascinating with this architect is amusing play in the syle, a balance of modern form of exterior and a flavor of jeunesse.
