San Sebastian -

The weather was completely down in the morning with rain. I gave up possible ideas of visiting St Jean Pied de Port or at least go to the market, and decided to move to San Sebastian. From France, a transfer of trains will be normally needed at Hendaye. It was quite easy because the station of Basque train was in the parking area on the right as I got out of SNCF station, and the fare was as cheap as 1.55 Euros. The train leaves every 30 minutes mostly. The destination says Lasarte but you don't have to worry because it stops at Amara in San Sebastian.
Donostia B&B is my lodging in this city because it was well reputed by some visitors in their blog, and it was in the prime location, next to big ZARA store. Upon receiving me in their 5th floor facility, Luz explained in English the full details about where to visit and which bars to try. Amaria is equally friendly, and you feel so much at home. You can use the kitchen, too. Bearing in mind that this is a home environment, the bath room is shared, and the sound is more or less transparent. The doors squeaked rather loud despite yourself. But I love staying here. I went to Monte Ulgull and the Old Town in the afternoon, and the weather gradually improved.

Bayonne -

I stayed in this city without a firm idea of purposes except transit. Hotel Hameau was conveniently close from the train station just by the bridge. It was also close to downtown. Compared to yesterday's hotel of pilgrimage in Lourdes for less than 30 Euros, this three-star hotel was like an amazement. No troubles in the wi-fi network, either.
I paid visits to two museums. Basque Museum was valuable for gaining basic understanding of Basque cultures. I am not so interested in Bonnat, but it was the art museum in Bayonne. It may appeal to Rubens fans as there was some collection. There were also a few paintings of Ingre.

Train from Lourdes to Bayonne -

I arrived at the train station allowing more than 20 minutes, and I saw a queue of several people at the ticketing. I thought this should be okay but also felt a bit worried if it took 5 minutes per person, and the situation was worse. The three travelers at the counter were being dealt for over 15 minutes and there was still no sign of issuing their tickets. When I proceeded to the second of the line, it left only a few minutes and at that time a young couple behind started asking us in the line if each person was in a hurry. I told to everyone that I've got 5 minutes left, and the lady in front of the line said to us go head. We all managed to catch the train. I found that the ticket was valid for 2 months, and I could have bought one the day before.

Lourdes -

With a view of snowy mountains far beyond and the appearance of houses from the bus, Lourdes looked like an attractive ville, but when I really stayed there, I felt some indescribable sense of chaos. This is the place where the energy toward religion generated some sort of prosperity. The perspectives in any religious headquarters might be more or less similar like this, but numerous people move in groups and dealing with them are souvenir shops, restaurants and hotels. The information office here was incomparably modern in the environment.
I went to see the evening prayer at 21:30 which was an international event, and the hymns were sort of touching as always. The Glotte was behind the church further on the right side, and I surely got a bottle of sacred fountain water of Loudes, but it flew out from the faucet rather powerfully, more so than that in my house, and it wasn't like from a fountain.

A Splendid Day in Gavarnie -

Cirque de Gavarnie: 6/03

The B&B host helped me in identifying places to visit and with some backup options such as Cauterets and Pic du Midi, I went to the information office in town. The young man who dealt with me said in the beginning that the bus for Gavarnie was at 7:30 in the morning and I thought I should hire a taxi in that case, but he spoke to his senior lady and came back saying actually the one he mentioned was outdated and according to the current time-table it was 9:50. Splendid and perfect as the returning bus was at 16:15!
This existence of transportation was a great bonus to me as I came here almost determinedly to hire a taxi.
In this morning, the bus came in front of the information center 10 minutes late. Except for an old lady sitting in the first raw seat, I was the only passenger, and the fare was only 2 Euros surprisingly for the 45 minutes' ride of winding mountain road. At Gavarnie also, the bus stopped in front of the information, and a magnificent view already greeted me there. It was said promener (hiking) to snows on the skirt of mountains was about 90 minutes which begins with a comfortably maintained flat road along the brook of snow-melted water and the fresh greens on the slopes both sides are pleasing. After about 40 minutes of walk, the road starts climbing but it wouldn't be too tough and it ends in about 30 minutes. People who visit here all dressed very light and the average age seemed rather high. They sit on stones and spread their lunch. I had a baguette sandwitch that I had made with roast beef, cheese and carrot as I had had for my previous night's meal. Frankly, a few strawberries I brought with were the best, and I thought the watery sweet fruits are the greatest thing to have after an exercise (if not a beer).

Luz Saint Sauveur -

As TGV arrives at Lourdes from Bordeaux, I transferred to a bus for Luz St Sauveur which is about 40 minutes of journey into mountains. I had picked a B&B called Christine et Petxu, a private house located in 10+ minutes of walk uphill from the bus stop. Eaglecreek Switchback instead of ordinary suitcase was the right choice. Their reservation required an international bank transfer of the first night's due which is rather expensive and complicated, therefore people in Japan would normally avoid staying, but in my case I had means to make a transfer without a charge and also their price was indeed attractive. It seemed run by a Spanish family, and I had breakfast with their daughter, a middle-school girl perhaps. In Carrefoul in town, I bought a fees stuff to bite in the hike, and actually decided to eat the same for the dinner in my room. I could borrow a glass, a tray, a knife and a fork, they even said that I could use the dining room. This sort of thing is the better part than a hotel.
Luz was truly comfortable. It is a base camp for Pyrenees mountains and the view is authentic. It's tranquillity is what I liked. Their summer season may be busy but the town itself is quite petit and it does not smell commercialized.

Pauillac -

In the first morning, I went to the office of tourism in Bordeaux for the direction for Chateau Pontet-Canet because I sent a request mail of a visit at Narita airport as I was about to leave and their reply was waiting for me when I got to the room in bordeaux.
I was instructed to take tram C upto Les Aubiers and transfer to #705 Gironde bus there. It was quite easy but there were only two services in the morning at 7:33 and 10:49. It was an amazing route passing through Chateau Margux, Beycheville, Comtesse Lalande and others to get to Pauillac. At la maison de tourisme de Pauillac, I obtained a map and started walking. The lady at the information said roughly 20 minutes, but it was not that close. Passing through the town without an appeal, going over the railway, I took the road toward left, and soon it became totally unpaved ending up in the middle of vineyards. Proceeding further, I recognized the chateau building on my right, which means that I came in the backside. It took more than 40 minutes from the town to the entrance where a couple from Toronto and their friends from La Rochelle were waiting for the last visitor's arrival for 2 o'clock tour, and I just made it.
The guide said that they are making more emphasis on bio and even started using horses because bringing heavy vehicles in the vineyards potentially causes damages to the field.

After Pontet-Canet, I walked further to Mouton-Rothchild which was conveniently close for a nice promenade. Unfortunately, they had rather Important process going on and not accepting visits for the period.
Considering the return bus at 16:30 from Le Pouyalet, this was pretty much all that I could handle in a day without a car.
