Haruki Murakami’s new novel “1Q84” was released on May 29 and sold out almost immediately. It is well known here as all TV channels reported it in their news. Its second issue was dated on June 10, and I happened to stop by at a bookstore yesterday to see a few of them. I picked up one and the lady who came in after me took the other, and it was the end of the new inventory. It is said that Shinchosha has shipped 1.06 million copies of two volumes altogether, amazing number of output in 2 weeks and this may relate with the fact that he recently won Jerusalem Award. I am rather curious how the split of two volumes is in publishing: 50/50 or 60/40? As I will be leaving for Europe in two days, I will bring the first volume with me to read while traveling. Coincidentally in July issue of Courrier Japon was an interview with Haruki Murakami, and I found the way he answered represented very much of him.
