I just spoke a few days ago with a friend in the States and we mutually said to each other that we would take long enough to wait and see before buying one, but I might change my mind because I am now concerned about the physical efficiency of my luggage for the forthcoming travel. The unavailability of Ethernet would be overcome by an AirMac Express perhaps, and as I do not carry business document to finish in sync with the PC, its functionality might be just enough for the need in my case.
In Japan, even with iPad the situation of electronic books won’t change quickly. I have been interested in the concept of digital books from its dawn with the introduction of Voyager’s “Expanded Book” much before Acrobat came to the market. Since that time, the ignorance of Japanese publishers was well noted, and it is the exact cause of their “clear and present danger”.
For me, the immediate interest is more in electronic delivery of newspapers and magazines. My novel reading could gradually develop later. And in parallel, those who are familiar with iTouch or iPhone are well aware of the extraordinary potential of this new peripheral pad. As an example, the consumer has boosted the market of so-called “net book” 10-inch notebook PC in recent years, and iPad will be potentially a proposal of more refined alternative to them. It is ideal and handy for e-mails and web blousing at home. When it is not in hand, it serves as a digital photo-frame. With a flawless application if realized, iPad could radically change the style of presentations.
Judging from early users’ feedbacks, iWork for iPad suffers from fundamental compatibility issues with its computer version and is condemned useless (no alternative fonts, no footnotes, no version history, no presentation notes). It may serve as mere idea notes for the time being, and need to wait for a more aggressive revision as well as multi-tasking.
Also, not exactly the mainstreamer but it offers variety of games, too. The iPhone/iTouch/iPad family is already forming a significant platform for game developers realistically.
It is in short a business model to involve numerous applications as its essential element, and to hedge its business before digital books really take off: Obviously the same success strategy by Apple as the case of packaging music delivery and iPod. My coolest option as a user would be probably the second generation, but those who may involve should act faster.

Well I played with one yesterday. A friend visiting from Europe (and stuck here because of the volcano) got one and we tried it out from a practical point of view. The touch and feel of internet response, loading apps and launching them is very much like the iPhone, but the screen with its bigger size and higher resolution is simply gorgeous! The restrictions on iTunes are of course the same, and we couldn't buy any specific apps here in the US on my friends iTunes account, and strangely, my iTunes account didn't even show iPad specific apps...
Anyway, the few apps we were able to try have a snappy response, great graphics (not different in reality, but the screen size makes a very different impression). Haven't been able to try any office related apps, but viewing attached documents on the screen is a blast.
Best thing was calling up some (European) newspapers and reading in either orientation ....I think you might be happy with one, even with limited functionality.
