iPadが届いたのは昨日の午後3時頃だった。アプリやデータの整理に取りかかったのは夜になってから、結局寝床に入ったのは朝の3時だった。
まずは以下のアプリを入手した。
Pages (文書の読み書き目的)
Cloud Readers (PDFファイルの閲覧)
iBooks (電子図書)
Filterstorm (写真データ加工)
Google Mobile App (音声認識検索)
BBC News
Wikipanion
Dictionary.com
WordReference English-French Dictionary
以上は言わばインストール作業なのだが、何しろこれまでのパソコンとは勝手が違う。アプリ上にはメニュー的なものはほとんどない。しかもユーザーガイドにはそうした解説まで網羅されてなく、基本操作だけの説明で終わりだ。僕はPDFファイルの取り込みで一瞬頭がフリーズしたが、Cloud Readersの最新版ではこのインポート機能が追加されていて助かった。必ずインターフェース先のMacを拠点として経由させるというのが決め事のようだ。
手にしてみて気付いたのだが、iPad最大のネックは印刷機能がないことかも知れない。元々が電子書籍のツールだからそれを紙に出力されても困るし、紙媒体はもう徹底的に排除しようという意識の表れでもあるのだろう。
シングルタスクのシステム環境が制約となって使いづらさも現実にある。例えばインターネットのURLをいくつか参照したメールをもらったとしよう。そのリンクをひとつクリックすると画面はブラウザに飛んでそのサイトを開いてくれる。でもその時メールソフトは終了しているので、ふたつ目のリンクを見ようにも元のメールには戻れない。ブラウザを閉じてまた最初からメールソフトを起動しなくてはならない。Wi-FiモデルのiPadにもマイクは内蔵されていたので、Skypeもそのままで試せた。ここでも会話中に何か書類を見ようと思ってもSkypeを閉じないと他のアプリは開けられない。
先日話題になったフラッシュ非対応についても困る人は色々だろう。僕の場合、日経新聞電子版で紙面レイアウトの部分はフラッシュで構成されていたので閲覧できないことに気付いた。
最後に重さ約700gの本体は片手で持って読書というのはやや負担が大きいだろう。
以上、いろいろ触ってすぐ感じた問題点を羅列してみたが、これから旅先でどう使いこなせるかは後日の報告としたい。

iPad arrived yesterday around 3 p.m. I started setting up applications and data in the evening and it was as late as 3 a.m. when I finally went to bed. I picked up the following apps:

This is the installation work, and it was very different from what we understand with PCs. Apps do not offer so-called menu tab while the User Guide only explains the fundamental operation of pre-installed apps. I was momentarily stuck when I wanted to try importing some PDF files. I was lucky because the latest Cloud Readers version added this exact function, and the basic rule was everything came through the companion Mac as the base station.
One great function missing that I realized in manipulating the iPad in hand was printing. Logically, this tool is for electronic book reading essentially where the conversion of media to paper via printing was probably not welcome, and it might be Apple’s strong statement to get rid of paper from any media from now on.
Inconvenience due to single-task system environment was reality. For example, you receive a mail with a few threads of internet links, and by clicking one of them, the screen jumps to the site as expected, but the mailer at that time closes in background. You cannot return from browser to mailer for the second thread, but you must restart the mailer after closing the browser.
A built-in mic was integrated even in Wi-Fi iPad, so I could start Skype with iPad alone. Here, if you want to refer to some document or information while discussing over the phone, but you must shut down Skype to open another application.
It was a big news recently that Flash was not supported in iPad, and this will inevitably cause problems in various places, and in my case in reading Nikkei electronic newspaper, the section of real paper layout was structured in Flash thus unreadable.
And lastly, its weight of about 700g was rather touch to keep holding in one hand for reading.
Today, I listed only the bottlenecks I recognized with iPad in front of me, and I hope to report how it serves my purposes in the trip.
