FT - Femtocell in my room

My listening room is situated in downstairs, virtually half-buried by tall walls, preventing cellular waves to reach although it is actually on the ground level. I don’t know about other carriers but Softbank's barely works.
A solution is provided by Softbank for free of charge, and I registered for the service. It is named “Home Antenna FT” and a small transmitter box functions as a 3G antenna that connects via LAN to the main 3G pipeline through Internet. Waiting for almost 2 months, a router arrived first and then a femtocell device followed later. I placed them in the listening room; they only required connecting to my network with not extra settings, but the device indicators repeated red (turn on) and green/blink (loading) for quite a while, so I went upstairs leaving them behind. When I came back later, they were up and running. Now as many as five bars are on my iPhone indicating full wave strength, and I won’t miss incoming calls any more.

Are you guys amateur?

I could not believe my ears when I heard the news of 3 workers of Todenko who were exposed to radiation in one the the reactor buildings in Fukushima plant. Two of them went in the facility with their own low shoes and got wet walking in the puddle! It has been rumored that this plant is loose in administration and that they had many minor accidents and failures for years. No words can be found for this accident except sloppiness.
Firemen or electric engineers may come for operations in their own uniform, but the order to thoroughly check and ensure them in a radiation-proof costume from the tiptoes to the top of the hair before sending them out to the battle field is the very first step that must be found in the manual even for beginners. Or Tepco does not care the subcontractors?

And then, the fuss of their measurement of extremely dangerous 2.9 billion becquerels of iodine-134 per cm3 Saturday. They later informed that they were mistaken identifying the radioactive component and it could be cobalt-56 instead of iodine-134. Early in Sunday morning they finally amended it to be cesium-134 with 3-digit lower level. Dumbfounded...

I really appreciate the employees’ continued and devoted effort risking their lives, but as the failures pop out one after another in their risk management, it means the problem is essentially in their management of system and organization.
“They estimated the foreseeable risk level too low and delayed the countermeasures” writes Le Monde with the comment of a related specialist saying “ the catastrophe was provoked by human carelessness rather than by nature”. It appears they reflect the reality...

Kunugiya, Yufuin

We visited Yufuin for the first time. I searched lodgings that were not super classy in advance, and reserved one night each at Hananomai and Auberge Kunugiya. The weather was unfortunately rather cold these two days as if the winter came back, and we heard Japanese warbler’s singing while it snowed in the morning. Still the visit was comfortably relaxing.
Contrasting to Beppu in decline, Yufuin successfully managed to gain a reputation among young female travelers as a national brand destination. Seriously, there is nothing very special in this remote village in the mountain, and it is difficult to explain why Yufuin is so much loved by them. There are mountains, brooks, fields; that is a landscape of good old country as a whole. In addition is the hot spring. It would be even more comfortable to be here in the springtime.
For the second night, we stayed at Auberge Kunugiya, located more than 100 meters higher into the mountain from the village center, and the next further up was the renowned retreat Murata. They seldom need the air-conditioner in the summer up here. Kunugiya had a separate one-story room for music listening, and all the furniture was of George Nakashima, which displayed slightest passion of the owner’s taste. Linn Kaber was sitting as the audio system in the room with Marantz CD5003 player. Because the guests operate this system, it tends to go broken occasionally, and this player was chosen as the third or fourth generation successor. It was amusing to find some common taste with mine among two or three dozens of CD albums, such as Landowska, Gould or Enya. An impressive disc in this collection of the owner’s past uncle was the music of Spain in the 15th and 16th century performed by New London Consort, and the recording quality by Linn Records was brilliant.
I noted some tasteful Arita ceramics in this lodging’s interior by scanning the lighting stands, the plates and the likes. They were fine articles of Gen-uemon or Fukagawa. I learned later that the owner had been an old acquaintance with Gen-uemon. Even the cups in the washing room or the plates of electric outlet were no plastic in Kunugiya. Similarly in the first lodging, Hananomai, some attractive dinnerware was specially made for the chef by his friend ceramic artist. Because Kyushu is one of the major areas of producing ceramics, it was exciting to confirm the level of local appreciation. The auberge was built 20 years ago and it made our stay very much at home while it served just like a gallery by itself.

My report about the lodging dinners should be uploaded in my separate blog “visibeau mange-ou”.

Beppu Hotspring

Like many other ancient hotspring spots, the town of Beppu looked tired. Their metabolism was not functioning. As Beppu onsen spots scatter in various directions, we chose to stay at a hotel in Oita and commute to Beppu by train that took 12 minutes, and this approach worked quite well. Hokke Club in Oita was clean, functional with good size of the room, situated in a good location. And above all, the charge was only 5100 Yen including very nice breakfast.

I tried two contrasting onsen spots in Beppu this time. The first was Onsen Hoyoland in Konya Jigoku known for mud bath, and it was about 25 minutes bus ride from the station. The facility was aged and unchanged for probably a half century to say the least. Many safety lockers were left broken. You have to walk a long, open corridor from the entrance to the bath, and the visit in winter is not recommended. The bath itself was wild and interesting. The outdoor section is mixed for men and women, which appeared least defensive inevitably. On the other hand, couples may try mud spa a la DIY mutually rubbing the partner’s body with the mud though it won’t be too sensual as there are neighbors in the bath. The water is not too hot and allows a long bathing. Female visitors who are not ambitious enough can experience at least the internal hot tub and also the walled section of mud bath. The admission of 1050 Yen is a bit high considering the facility conditions.

The second was Suginoi Hotel, probably the most popular facility leading Beppu today. They offer the complimentary shuttle service from the station. Tanayu consists of 3 or 4 different levels of open-air onsen tubs with a magnificent view of the entire town of Beppu and the bay, and its admission fee of 1500 Yen covers another section called Aqua Garden hot water pool to play in swimsuit. This place is more like an amusement park and the traffic is busy, and it must be popular in the summer because the bath and the pool under the sky with a view is quite an attraction. It should be dependable for foreign visitors, too.

Dazaifu -

For over a week since the earthquake, we kept watching the news programs on TV whole day as all the channels only broadcast such programs, but it can accumulate mental stress not only on kids but also on us adults to trace nothing but the information of the quake and the tsunami repeatedly all the time. It might be the time now for us to get back to our ordinary mode of life but consciously thinking of what each of us should do under the given situation.

Having said this, we are in Kyushu now with flowery spring just at the corner down south. This is the first time for us to visit Dazaifu, known as the God of Learning. We are right in the season of Ume, Japanese apricot, and the trees in the garden of Tenmangu Shrine were beautiful in full bloom.
From there, the long escalator takes you up over a hill to Kyushu National Museum established in 2005. It was a surprisingly huge architecture, and was designed by Kiyonori Kikutake, a locally-born architect in Kurume, who also designed Tokyo Edo Museum. We saw the regular exhibition that was interesting, but a little unfortunate was that they did not have any emblematic display to make this museum extremely popular nationwide.

Staying out of Tokyo -

As we had enough aftershocks, and overviewing multiple factors, my wife was determined to encourage our daughter’s family to visit the relatives down south in Fukuoka to allow sufficient distance from the ongoing turmoil because the grandchildren got strangely uneasy (scheduled electricity shutdown and commodity shortage affected for the worse), and essentially because the worry of radioactive risk was increasing. She led this trip for herself under the pretext of extra hands, and they flew out the day before yesterday just like many foreign people flying home. She then strongly invited me from there to join, so I am checking the flight availability now. Evacuation was common during the war, but for us born afterward, it is actually the first experience to do this kind of thing.

Whales to alarm quakes -

2 days before the catastrophic earthquake in Japan, there was preceding one with the magnitude 7.3 in the offshore of Sanriku on March 9. Looking back, it must have been a clear pre-notice. And 5 days before that on March 4, 52 whales went aground on a beach in Ibaraki prefecture. Someone predicted on the net that an earthquake would be coming on March 6 based on the observation of this reckless dives of whales. It is a hot topic now on the net with another supporting evidence of 107 whales aground in Steward Island, New Zealand just 2 days before the quake in Christchurch. I recall that million sardines died in Redondo Beach, California on March 9 (Japan time). Wonder if it relates with the recent earthquake?

Post-quake reaction of people in Tokyo -

We hear some amazements from overseas about cool behavior of Japanese in general in the middle of the earthquake. Here is another profile that might be interesting. I visited 3 different super-markets in town to find various items such as mineral water, bread, noodles, toilet papers, batteries, and etc. were completely sold out. In people’s mind is a definite disaster that they want to prepare for.
Even more interestingly, bicycles were all sold out (to go home) in many shops in downtown Tokyo the night of earthquake.

Blast repeats in Fukushima -

The second blast came today in the third reactor's building, and the other is likely to follow soon.
A vent on the ceiling to release the air when the pressure goes high inside the facility is such a simple thing, but 40 years ago it was not in the design. It means the atomic pros did not consider all the possible steps. Now they will try to drill a hole through the ceiling of 2nd reactor housing before blasting!

We already learned in Hanshin the speed was life

The press announcement of the Government and also of Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency just before 18:00 was totally appalling. The nuclear power plant’s first reactor building in Fukushima blasted around 15:30, and it was apparent that the ceiling and the walls were gone according to NHK TV broadcast, but the announcement only confirmed the fact of explosion of “some sort” with no further explanation of the detail status, and only stressed that they were gathering various information. NISA in particular is expected to discuss technical views professionally but they behaved merely as bureaucrat. All this, if the result of past 2 hours and 30 minutes, definitely showed the lack of speediness. I think this is an emergency practically like in a war, and it is vital for us to share accurate information. Can we depend our lives on those slow-minds? [See this!]

3/11 Earthquake -

Half of Japan was shaken, and it keeps shaking intermittently. Northern area is disastrous widely. More than 1000 people were lost and numerous people wait for the rescue. The atomic power house in Fukushima is at the risk of leaking. Tokyo tower antenna is reported bent.

In Tokyo, I was in the underground concourse of Ikebukuro station to transfer. The quake was horrifyingly the biggest I have ever experienced and it kept shaking very long. And came rather large aftershocks repeatedly. The service of transportation was lost rest of the day, and people were stuck in town.

By the way, I have to amend my yesterday's comment on Cyclemeter as I ended up walking home from the station for several hours. Reloading of the map was smooth while walking, and the root finding was very dependable.

iPhone and GPS - Cyclemeter

The fair sky tempted me to have a road running on my bike in order to maintain my physical conditions and also to test the new GPS application called Cyclemeter. The route was about 11 kilometers with no stressful ups and downs, from Zushi, through Hayama and Prefectural Museum, up to Enjoin Temple just before Akiya that took a little over 30 minutes. Overall, it was a rather light promenade of some 23 kilometers for 90 minutes.

In contrast to major and much populated town of Hayama, Akiya area provides deeper air of remote resort spot while retaining the country atmosphere. The area does not look merely old as there are several gorgeous houses here and there. I happened to run into a dead-end road, and on my right was a tiny, square house that was interestingly well designed. I searched the net later to find that it was designed by Mayumi Miyawaki, a famous architect, and was for sale.

Cyclemeter has variety of operating modes such as walking, running, and even swimming, but you need to buy each plug-in for the proper function. Top of the screen is alway fixed to the north regardless which direction you are heading, and therefore it may not be super-handy for navigation. In my case, I only pick up iPhone from my pocket to check where I am, but the reload of a map looked too slow beyond my patience. For this type of uses, I think DIY GPS that I introduced the other day seems more comfortable. On the other hand, when it comes to exercise and training to do time-trials by setting the route, you can check the records in detail afterward, and it must be fun to use its variety of functionality on the excellent and easy-to-read screen layout.

Okinawa occupation mentally

The speech of US State Department official to students has boiled up as a serious concern here. Kevin Maher is the head of the Japanese affairs office who speaks fluent Japanese and has a Japanese wife. Briefly, he reportedly said “Okinawans are masters of manipulation and extortion, and they are too lazy to grow goya vegetable.” This may be an evidence of their mindset still occupying Okinawa after the war. Our JDP Cabinet, being foreign affairs amateur, protested to US Ambassador John Roos over the phone when the Ambassador made an inquiry call. Always reactive... If in China, they would surely call up to bring Japanese Ambassador Niwa in the midnight.

When it comes to Okinawa and foreign affairs in Japan, professor Kei Wakaizumi comes up in my mind who acted as secret negotiator of Prime Minister Sato and dealt with Kissinger in the background focusing on Okinawa’s reversion in 1972. The hidden precise details are revealed in his book “The Best Course Available”. I guess I am not the only one who think the international negotiations won’t move forward without such determination and confidence as he maintained. It is interesting to see the author enjoyed a sense of resonance to two scholars of English literature, Yoshio Nakano and Tsuneari Fukuda on their views over foreign diplomacy in the book:
“Nothing is as dreadful as documentation of foreign affairs. It may sound slightly exaggerated, but an instant of negligence cannot be tolerated. The most dangerous is to promote a sweet dream of possibly receivable good intensions to the mind of our people.”
“Democracy is the system of government to disclose trivial sort of things in order to hide the most important issues.”

iPhone and GPS - DIY GPSというアプリ

I thought of getting Garmin Oregon 450 GPS trail navigator when I visited Canada last December, but I ended up buying a Xootr scooter and had to give up the first idea. I then thought the similar function might be obtained with iPhone’s GPS. An application called DIY GPS can use variety of maps, even copies from guidebooks (latitude/longitude data are relatively easy to get today), and you can see where you are by only relying on GPS in mountains with no 3G signal. So I downloaded this clever Japanese application from iTunes Store for 450 Yen.

As for the maps, Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI) offers various maps in their site “Watchizu” (if not Google), and Kashmir 3D is the PC application to slice them into a page of KMZ file copy (compatible to Garmin). As I am a Mac user, I used the trial version of Crossover to run Kashmir on the Mac platform. Its installation was rather slow but the actual function was reasonable. The file transfer from PC/Mac to iPhone can be conveniently handled using Dropbox. First, you have to download it on your PC or Mac and proceed the registration, then you can select the files. Next is the download of iPhone application and you log on as a registered user. The rest is very simple and straightforward.

Now I should be able to open the map in KMZ file format on DIY GPS. But nothing shows up... I tried another approach using JPG file in iPhone’s Camera Roll list, but DIY GPS does not seem locating it. My repeated efforts did not succeed and I gave up in the end. It was 12 o’clock midnight when I sent a mail to Mr. Matsumoto, the developer, for help. In less than an hour, a reply came. The point he made clear was that the application must not be turned on when processing the map file. On multitasking iPhone/iPad, the applications, once opened, will stay on in the background. Following his instructions, all the problems were solved entirely. I was totally impressed with this accurate and speedy support of application.
