Dehumidifier -

Ikuyo Nakamichi Plays for Children –

I went to Kanagawa Music Hall today for a Chopin concert for children. Like the concert the other day, Ikuyo Nakamichi played Pleyel built in the era of Chopin, and she explained how the pianos were different in a great depth playing Valse du Petit Chien on both pianos for comparison. It must have been an exciting and interesting program for children having piano lessons.
I supposed the Pleyel used this time was the one owned by Yamaha, but it was explained that the instrument came from Osaka. The man tuning it appeared as the owner, and he said that he had been looking for a Pleyel that retained the original condition and made all the efforts to maintain it with repair parts of the same period. This piano was built in 1846 and its tone sounded to me with less harmonics than Mr. Arita’s Pleyel built in 1839. Since the halls were quite different, I am least confident how accurately I could hear such difference though.
Modern pianos sound very metallic in contrast to the old Pleyel that provides more wooden flavor. It is simply my poor thought but it appeared to me that the play style with clear articulation and arpeggio fitted well with the old Pleyel and therefore it could be said that the instrument may be closer to playing a harpsichord in a way.

Zushi Fireworks 2010 -

It was Zushi Fireworks night today. I wrote about it a year ago, and though it appears to be a local event, its exciting content is the first class. 19:15 in the weekday might be difficult to catch up in time from Tokyo, but it is absolutely worth a travel to lie on yourself on the beach to watch the fireworks above you and so near to you.
The wind was strong today against us, and the smokes distrubed me to take pictures with good view of fireworks, so I switched to video quicky.

Hakoshima Yusui Spring

I got off at Onogami Station on Agatsuma Line, but there was no information for tavelers. I could only ring up the town office for the directions, and they were very kind explaining the way to Hakoshima Yusui.
Taking right in front of the station, you almost already see a bridge on the left. You go across the bridge and the road will bring you up to another main road with busy traffic. It was about 12 minutes of walk in my case. Then go to the left (in the direction for Shibukawa, Ikaho), and in about 6 minutes you will see a post office on your left and then a Japanese sign plate of “Yusui 900m” on the road. That’s where you make right to the mountain road. The stone statue of Jizo will greet you at the entrance of the road to Hakoshima Fudoson Temple. You may take the asphalt-surfaced road for vehicles but the hikers would take the unpaved road shaded by the trees. After 5 minutes of uphill, the road gets flat and then gradualy recovers its tilt in 5 or 6 more minutes. It was about 30 minutes from the Station to the Spring.
What you see first is a waterfall, and obviously the water is immense. The local people fill a few of portable tanks with water to bring back on the single-wheel dolly, and they told me that it tasted great when they streamed the rice with this water. The stream was very cold, probably as low as 10 degrees C.
This spring is one of hundred selected waters in Japan. There is generally only one train per hour on Agatsuma Line, therefore a 2-hour detour visit to Hakoshima would be easy to be planned, but you should consult with the timetable carefully because in the daytime there are less trains.

Open Lessons in Kusatsu -

In the Summer Music Festival in Kusatsu, the guest musicians from foreign countries have classes for the youth every year, and we can observe some in their lessons open to the public. I went to a class for cello today.
Tamás Varga, the teacher, gave a half-hour lesson each to 4 students playing Schumann, Brahms and R. Strauss. The students were technically not bad, but there are several challenges in front of them obviously. The accuracy of the keys and the tempo is the fundamental skill for them to master to begin with, and in addition, without refining their analytic ability of melodies and structures, the music will not be attractive enough to the audience. The lessons indeed revealed the performance being a truly creative and difficult task.
And Mr. Varga was a credible teacher. Like an excellent football player who manipulates the ball always around him, the melodies were always within his reach, and he looked so relaxed and enjoyed in playing. Being Hungarian, he appeared to me the true descendant of Janos Starker. His instrument was so different from those of students, too. It had a beautiful sound with rich and clear tones in upper frequencies.

Transportation to Kusatsu Hot Springs –

Kusatsu is definitely one of the best places in Japan to enjoy “Onsen” experience. First of all, the water quality of the hot springs is superb. And secondly, situated in 1000-meter high mountains, the visits are worthwhile in variety of seasons; the cool summer, the autumn with colorful leaves, or even the snowy winter for skiing and the greenery spring. Its accessibility from Tokyo is another merit: While the buses are conveniently available to/from Shinjuku, the most economical is the Spa Resort Liner bus, once in the morning, from Tokyo and Shinjuku stations for only Y2,000. If you stay at Nakazawa Village, their transportation service from Tokyo is even cheaper. The Spa Resort Liner also runs from Karuizawa (@11:40/16:30, Y1,000), then a Shinkansen from Tokyo is an efficient option to couple with it, or you may combine a short visit at Karuizawa before taking 16:30 liner. In our case, we love to take a slow train to Takasaki and transfer to local Agatsuma Line for Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi (then 25-minute bus) which costs Y3,610.

Helsinki Formula Scrubber -

Sweating a lot in the head wearing a Panama hat in the summer, I looked for a scrubber for more refreshing shampooing, and have bought a product called Helsinki Formula that seemed well reputed. It was not cheap here while it's only $10 in USA. In fact, with a decent massaging effect to the head, it is far more comfortable than expected. It is going to be a must-have for my bath time.

Tokyo Summer –

The heat in Tokyo is incessant. It hit 38.1 degrees Celsius in Nerima, Tokyo yesterday, and I was there unfortunately because my daughter’s family occupy my Zushi home to let the kids play in the pool and the beach with some of their friends this week, and in exchange I stay in our old house in Nerima.
It is said that the massive summer heat accumulated in the central Tokyo tends to be pushed up north by the wind from the sea: That is why Nerima and neighboring Saitama get heated. At 37 or 38 degrees, it is hard to breathe without an air-conditioner under the environment without much green, and thus everybody runs the air-conditioners to make the situation even worse. If you fail to pay the electricity fee, you won’t survive.
Because of this, my wine cellar box exceeded 20C and it didn’t get cooler, so I threw in some frozen coolants. A very tough summer for my wines, too.

My Cataract Operation, Act 1

I will have an operation of cataract in October.
It was in the autumn of 2007 when I visited an optical clinic in the neighborhood as I felt the problem of visibility with my left eye, at which time I merely wanted to get a prescription to change my glasses. They examined my eyes carefully even with the eyeground checks, and they saw no particular problems, therefore the prescription at best was like demanding me to live with this difficulty to a certain extent because increasing the degree of compensation would not automatically improve the visibility and because the difference of compensation between the eyes was already on the recommendable limit.
I reviewed how I see the vision, and in addition to the blur, I had tripple images deviated and overlapped which made me really tough to identify the letters in the ads and the faces of the people in distance. It is where the significant difference is from the right eye. I had this discomfort in everyday’s life for last 3 years, and I thought I had to settle it somehow this year: I checked various hospitals in the net including their reputations, and decided to visit a university hospital in Kanagawa prefecture.
The young doctor in charge of visitor-patients examined my eyes to find no major problems and the status of my cataract was said to be in the range of #2 among 5 steps, not too bad for both eyes. The result only confirmed the previous result at the clinic, and it still fails to identify the mechanism of my problem.
At the second visit, the doctor consulted with their cataract expert, and this middle-aged doctor was very quick to decide. He said my left eye was noticeably worse and it seemed it continued to deteriorate judging from my 2-year old glasses. He positively told me that the life would be easier with the operation of both eyes. He also said that my eyeground was quite clean for the age. This is how the things moved on so far.

Gardiner Bach Cantatas –

Volume 11 of Gardiner’s Bach Cantatas Series was delivered from UK about a month ago, and I listen to this latest release often recently. Included in this album are cantatas quite unfamiliar to me (BWV162/49/180/109/38/98/188), but all the works are brightly exhilarating, and it is so delightful to listen. Among them, Nos. 49 and 188 start with Sinfonia to bring you closer to the music, and particularly in the case of BWV 188, it is an appropriation, as Bach often makes, from D-minor Clavier Concerto BWV 1052.
The Bach Cantatas Series is the record of Monteverdi Choir project called Bach Pilgrimage executed in 1999 through 2000 in which they revisited the churches in various places on the exact date each specific cantata was originally performed (or supposed to be performed), and they keep releasing the record of this almost ridiculously complicated project up until today. It now only leaves Volumes 12 and 18 to be filled, and the delivery of total 27 volumes will complete by the end of the year.

Mirror at the Door -

One of the wishes my wife had been telling me was a full-length mirror by the entrance, and I found a bargain mirror pair of waveform at IKEA for only 990 Yen. I decided to put them behind the door of storage shelves. The walnut plates to hold the mirrors on the top and the buttom were actually more expensive, but in overall I thought it was a nice fit. Eventually, it did not seem appealed much to her as long as it is hidden behind the door.

Pleyel and Chopin –

I went to the concert of Classical Players Tokyo at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Theater. My seat was in the 5th row on the second floor. The size of this hall was apparently excessive for the ensemble of period instruments led by Hiroaki Arita, and some rows in the far end of second and third floors were supposed to be kept vacant for controlling the acoustic balance, but the second floor actually looked full. They probably decided to sell more seats because of higher demand than expected.

The first part of the program consisted of Summer from Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”, the overture of “Figaro” and the first movement of Mozart’s G-minor symphony, but it sounded to me the orchestra was not functioning properly as if an amateur band. I considered the possible reasons why.

1. The period instruments are not good enough.
2. The players are not well trained to play the period instruments.
3. The fundamental limitation of skills
As for the size of the hall, I could hear the soft passages enough, and I didn’t think it caused them some difficulty in particular. Something that annoyed me the most was the ensemble’s phrasing in which they tended to be loose in playing the melodies steady and accurate but slippery in fast passages. It could be a possible cause of the above item 2 or 3. Overlooking the players, they were generally young. Among them, Ms Ririko Maeda, the flutist looked dignified in presence, but even she is still young. One of second violinists appeared to be a junior indeed. I noted in the tuning before playing there were some subtle chaotic adjustments here and there in the pitch, and I suspected that their level might have not reached the state to fully enjoy the harmony and even including the stress of discords in music.

Nonetheless, this concert was exceptionally satisfactory because the main feature, Ikuyo Nakamichi to play Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 over a Pleyel built in 1841 that Arita owned, was so successful. I think the encounter with this authentic instrument of Chopin’s epoch was truly the eye-opener for Ms. Nakamichi in understanding how the composer constructed the music. It is why Pleyel is so exciting.
As for the style of playing concerto, it was explained that they followed the tradition of those days to accompany the piano with solo instruments where the piano and the orchestra play together, but I thought that such a direct practice might be a risky (and often dogmatic) approach to take in a completely different premise like this from 19th century’s salle for some 300 audience, while I appreciate the intent to realize the interesting contrast in music. The strings were in fact a bit too weak in balance. They had finished the recording of this concerto earlier on the day, and I look forward to the release of CD in December with a greater hope.

Hiroshima in 65 Years - 65年目のヒロシマ

With Ambassador Roos participating the Peace Anniversary today, USA finally came to Hiroshima on August 6 for the first time in 65 years. Also present in the ceremony were Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of UN, and representative ambassadors from UK and France. For the citizens of Hiroshima, including myself having mother and sister as hibakusha, it is definitely another memorable and significant step forward after Barack’s speech in Prague, because such A-bomb holding majors as US, UK and France had not accepted Mayor's invitation to August 6 ceremony in the past. Still the fundamental gap might be large between hibakusha’s mentality and US people’s perception, as I thought that the webpage of US Embassy in Japan was an ironical example earlier in the morning: the top article in their Japanese page was John Roos visiting Hiroshima for the ceremony, but there was not a single mention of it in the corresponding English page. Now at a later time, they have posted it (to my relief).

Peak of the Summer -

Five in the morning, and the sunbeam already appears to predict the hottest day in this summer. A light lunch of soba noodels would be nice in such a day, popped up in my mind, so I went to Bonzo, the next door to Zaimokuza Post Office. On the way is Kuhonji Temple with small but neat precincts. There were modest flowers blooming along the house walls in the premise.

When the esophageal cancer was found in January, Ozawa cancelled all his activities in the year for the operation, and after 7 months, he now has come back. For last 25 years, he has never failed to appear at his summer concerts in Yamanouchi Middle School and Saito Kinen Festival in Matsumoto.
He was rather slim having lost 15 kg of weight, and still requires more rigid physical recovery to perform ideally. He withholds overseas activities for a while, but will supervise a Japan Event in New York in the fall.

Zushi Beach -

Mid-summer Sunday. Young people flow to Zushi beach in this season. Also, noticeably many Americans come here, too. I don’t know why though.
After 2 o’clock, I walked about 20 minutes to the beach, as I had to go out for shopping. I did not prepare for swimming, and it was unfortunate because this hot weather could cause hyperthermia just by walking in the beach, so I decided not to stay longer and walked instead to the Starbucks in front of the station to rest.
I ordered a coffee-jelly frappuccino immediately and managed to get a seat. Starbucks near Zushi station shares the space with La Marée de Chaya therefore you can have a coffee and a better choice of cake if desired. I picked up my iPod to listen to something while I had the frappuccino, and played Bach’s violin concerto. Akiko Suwanai was among the collection but I chose Anne-Sophie Mutter this time. When the music ended, I stood up to go out into the heat, and I felt I was half-hyperthermic despite the cool rest.
