Mozart to Grieg, Bach to Shostakovich - さらに2Lを聴く

Inspired by the comfortable excitement of the first two albums of Grieg and of Mozart that I listened to, I continue to digest other discs produced by 2L as if following their trace. In due course, I noticed an ablum of piano duo titled “Mozart Grieg” featuring two female pianists, Margareta Nilssen and Heide Görtz.
The highlight of this album is definitely the Fantasy C-minor K. 475, arranged for 2 pianos by Grieg, and it seems that the critics in those days reacted totally negatively to Grieg’s effort. This piece is actually quite interesting.
The sonata for two pianos K. 448 was a faithful and steady performance, and thus without airy wits instead. Perhaps one may characterize it with the northern, like Volvo for example.
As I listened to “The Old Norwagian Romance with Variations”, I thought that 2L would sooner or later complete Grieg’s oeuvre, and it is a pleasing forecast, too.
The sound quality and the acoustic timbre of the piano recording were truly excellent, but the physical localization of two pianos was occasionally obscure with rather broad imaging and rich tones of the instruments. In order to perceive it more accurately, one should stay firm in the middle of the proper listening spot.

Another case in contrast had the image of instrument quite precisely while offering the three-dimensional, spacious acoustics. It was an SACD album rather than Blu-ray, titled “Polyphonic Dialogues”, performed by Norwagian pianist, Joachim Kwetzinsky. Shostakovich started composing 24 Preludes and Fugues in the 200th anniversary year of Bach whom he admired, and Shchedrin followed him, too. The album selects serval pieces from the work of each composer, and some of them sound quite Bach-like in essence. The recording is crystally crisp, and I think it is excellent because it recreates the instrument in front of us quite vividly.

Thirdly, I picked up the album titled “Divertimenti” of Trondheim Solistene. They are the young orchestra that played Mozart Violin Concerti I mentioned before. The recording of strings by 2L is always superb and to me it is thrilling. In this recording, the players sat in a circle surrounding the microphones. The disc covers the music by Britten, Bacewicz (Polish female violinist/composer who studied under Nadia Boulanger), Bjorklund (Post-war generation, Norwagian composer) and Bartók to oversee the type of music called divertimento from a viewpoint closer to contemporary era.

New Rental Server -

I moved my domain 2 months ago. I had been using A Net for years since I started Internet, and it was quite practical to manage my own domain name there from early days. After my retirement, I started archiving various information I had as a sort of web library, and its volume quickly exceeded 100MB for which the monthly fee almost reached 10 thousand yen to my concern. During the year-end break, I further posted several movie files and the invoice in the following month jumped up to applausive 30k, which was the end of my patience.
After searching rental servers in the net, I picked up X Company based in Kyoto because the monthly fee was only 1000 yen for 20GB capacity, the response seemed quick enough, and the facility supports most of popular needs. Upon my signing up with them, they immediately issued a request of domain transfer to A Net before my own request, and the paper work (electronic) went through in 2 days. I had a small struggle in the new setting of directories myself, but my home page and my mailbox moved entirely to the new server incredibly quickly.
Something unexpected in this change was a significant reduction of spam mails from overseas. I don’t understand why a mere server change results this and where those mails evaporated, but it is definitely bliss!

At the same time, I started blog tracking, although this had nothing to do with my domain itself. At first, I chose BlogTracker which was very handy with informative graphs, but there were function ceases for 2 days twice in several weeks, and I then tried StatCounter. Both are basically free, and the latter appears collecting data in slightly more detail and so far stable. Something interesting was occasional information discrepancy between them regarding such as access location or display resolution. There are some access data in BlogTracker even after I ceased its function strangely enough, and they do not show up in StatCounter.
So far domestic accesses are about 80% and from overseas USA is below 10%, followed by UK, Canada, France, Norway, Russia, Turkey, South Korea, and Germany. The most popular page is about Thiel CS1.6 constantly. It is useful in recognizing the overall situation.

Lunch in Toilet –

Last night in NHK TV was a program reporting college students who could not go to campus cafeteria alone because others might recognize him or her being short of friends. They eventually bite something in a toilet! The symptom is pretty much cellular-reliance syndrome. They have hundreds of mail addresses in their cellular, and the time that takes for a reply to reach indicates how close a friend is to them, therefore they constantly stand by trying not to be isolated.
What a pity! It looks like an aspect of the youth who do not wish to grow. In order to make them understand that the essence is their own independence of mind than the eyes around them, someone has to hold their hands and legs through an exercise.

I just spoke a few days ago with a friend in the States and we mutually said to each other that we would take long enough to wait and see before buying one, but I might change my mind because I am now concerned about the physical efficiency of my luggage for the forthcoming travel. The unavailability of Ethernet would be overcome by an AirMac Express perhaps, and as I do not carry business document to finish in sync with the PC, its functionality might be just enough for the need in my case.
In Japan, even with iPad the situation of electronic books won’t change quickly. I have been interested in the concept of digital books from its dawn with the introduction of Voyager’s “Expanded Book” much before Acrobat came to the market. Since that time, the ignorance of Japanese publishers was well noted, and it is the exact cause of their “clear and present danger”.
For me, the immediate interest is more in electronic delivery of newspapers and magazines. My novel reading could gradually develop later. And in parallel, those who are familiar with iTouch or iPhone are well aware of the extraordinary potential of this new peripheral pad. As an example, the consumer has boosted the market of so-called “net book” 10-inch notebook PC in recent years, and iPad will be potentially a proposal of more refined alternative to them. It is ideal and handy for e-mails and web blousing at home. When it is not in hand, it serves as a digital photo-frame. With a flawless application if realized, iPad could radically change the style of presentations.
Judging from early users’ feedbacks, iWork for iPad suffers from fundamental compatibility issues with its computer version and is condemned useless (no alternative fonts, no footnotes, no version history, no presentation notes). It may serve as mere idea notes for the time being, and need to wait for a more aggressive revision as well as multi-tasking.
Also, not exactly the mainstreamer but it offers variety of games, too. The iPhone/iTouch/iPad family is already forming a significant platform for game developers realistically.
It is in short a business model to involve numerous applications as its essential element, and to hedge its business before digital books really take off: Obviously the same success strategy by Apple as the case of packaging music delivery and iPod. My coolest option as a user would be probably the second generation, but those who may involve should act faster.

Kumano Shrine and Kawayu -

Having done with the trekking of Kumano Kodo from Totsukawa Hot-spring, I took bus to Kumano Grand Shrine, the destination genuinely meant for Kumano Kodo. I made a prayer briefly and caught a taxi for Kawayu Hot-spring which is known for natural outdoor pool just by digging the riverside for yourself. Almost deserted in the weekday, I went to the empty public bath to ease my tired body and wait until the bus for Shingu arrived. And then the last step of this tour to Yoshino-Kumano National Park is the overnight express bus back to Tokyo.

Black Diamond Trail Ergo Cork –

The trekking of Kumano Kodo I had this time could not have been accomplished without trekking poles. In my case, I have a problem with my right knee and I can only run as long as 2 miles. It has been very, very long since I gave up bicycle tours and mountaineering. Stimulations and invitations to extensive trekking by a friend of mine pushed me to try an experimental 10-kilometer trekking all alone that appeared rather reckless in a way, and above all I felt uneasy. The only solution to this looked like trekking poles and I bought Black Diamond Trail Ergo Cork following my friend’s recommendation.
I started the trek with anxiety still in my mind, and thus it was an astounding result for me to have accomplished the walk with no damages on my knees. I immediately felt the power and the usefulness of dispersing the load to the third and fourth legs by practicing the poles. This time, unlike old days, the pace was that of an old man confirming each step steadily, and it slowed down especially when the slope was steep regardless uphill or downhill. It needs time but at least the poles work to expand the area of activity as a useful tool of rehabilitation, and I think I can enjoy it now.

Kumano Kodo, Kohechi -

From Yoshino I took trains to Gojo where the express bus for long ride to Totsukawa Hot-spring can be caught. The bus center was a few minutes away along Route 24, and I moved quickly because I had only 10 minutes for transit and it was the last bus of the day to take. I actually found that the first stop after leaving was Gojo train station, therefore I only had to wait for the bus at the station. 3 hours from here was a long ride indeed, but you have beautiful views of the valley and the river on the way. A driving tour of this route must be wonderful. It was past 7 o’clock and already dark when I got to the destination. Matsunoya was the local inn I had booked and I walked up to the next bus stop. I picked it because it was close to the start point of Kumano Kodo. Nothing particular to mention about the inn, but it could be an occasion to experience the standard local style of staying. The hot spring water was mild and slippery on the skin, and I had a relaxed, easy bath after my long day of sakura tour in Yoshino.

Kohechi seems to be a good trekking route with steep slopes in both ends but relatively flat trail in the middle and it offers wonderful views. The historic passage has been well maintained and the stone Buddha in 33 places greet to refresh you. It is about 5 hours from Totsukawa Hot-spring to Yagio. Kumano Shrine Hongu is 10km further away.
Leaving the inn at 8 in the morning, I took the ascending road on the right after crossing Yanagimoto Bridge. Soon is an unsurfaced narrow slope starting Kumano Kodo. I kept climbing for 30 minutes to get to a small farm.

A tranquil view at Hatenashi Settlement. A large stone monument claimed World Heritage. It was not a profound village but a picturesque spot, and one can drive up here just to see how this view is like.

At 9:30 I arrived at Tensuiden, a deserted old rice field. While resting, a guy came up carrying a large signpost. He said a couple of others following him and they were to bring the posts up to the pass to put up. I excused and left the place assuming they would go ahead of me sooner or later.

Hatenashi Pass at 10:45, the peak point of 1,114m high. It took me 2.5 hours to get. The small, white signpost was indeed humble, and definitely nicer if replaced with the same one as in the entrance. I thought of waiting the guys to arrive having my lunch, but it was a little too soon to eat and also there was no place to comfortably hide from the wind, so I decided to leave after 20 minutes of pause.

The fatigue accumulated gradually on foot, and it was 12:45 when I reached Nanairo Junction. My plan was to go forward to Yakio if by 12:30 or descend directly to Nanairo if later than 13:00 as time might be tight for taking the bus. I could not immediately decide, but felt 2.3km of gradual slopes might be safer for my knees than a sharp downhill, and headed for Yakio. Still the final part continued with long steps going down quickly while I appreciated predecessors’ efforts to maintain the trail. I finally got to the signpost at 13:30, and I wondered if the same one already stood on the pass by that time? So much relieved, I could not easily move my feet further in realizing the bus stop was some 300m ahead of me.

Sakura in Yoshino -

(Busy street)

April 13 in the morning, we went to Mt. Yoshino. The season of sakura was in its latter part, thus we aimed Kamisenbon and further up. We took bus to Kinpu Shrine and walked to Saigyo-an. It was a tiny shack in rustic but tasteful area, and we spoke to an elegant lady of old couple who confessed that she had an unsuppressible desire visiting this Saigyo’s place. Very good indeed, but for typical tourists, the distance with ups and downs might be excessive, and the reality is “where the heck is Okusenbon (literally thousand trees further up)?” Originally, I thought of visiting Saigyo-an in the autumn and did not intend to visit it this time.
In short, the ultimate tour for sakura in Yoshino is to directly visit Hanayagura and stay there or walk by there. The color gradation in the slopes is marvelous and never tiring. Among many shrines in the mountain, I would recommend Mikumari Shrine for its cute garden and very old building. The street was packed and we were like trying to swim against the stream to catch 3 o’clock train back home.

Asuka and Sakurai -

Nara, the ancient capital of Japan, I am visiting since yesterday to execute two subjects I conceived when I traveled to Murouji Temple last fall: They are Eleven-faced Goddess of Mercy for one and cherry blossoms in Yoshino for the other. The schedule was matched with sakura but the special display of Goddess at Hokkeji and Kairyuoji in Nara ended last week unfortunately. This time, only Shorinji is covered, and instead, I added a walk of Kumano camino of pilgrimage after Yoshimo. I will take a 3-hour bus ride to Totsugawa Village down south from where a day of some 10km randonnée to Kumano Shrine Hongu.

We were very lucky yesterday having some sunshine and comfortable walk in the afternoon in Asuka. The routing we chose was from Amakashi Hill to Ishibutai Tumulus via Asuka Temple and Sakafuneishi. Time passes slowly in the landscape of Yamato. And what amazed us was the fact that every spot was cleanly serviced. In contrast, many years ago for example, Ishibutai was openly deserted and everyone could freely visit there, and now we pay the admission to watch stones. We enjoyed slow, relaxed walk, but Asuka would be best to visit using rental bicycles. We actually stayed at Royal Hotel in front of Kashihara Jingu Station for convenience, and very much delighted to find that they had hotspring public baths as we could release the fatigue in the hot pool. And one thing I should note is that there was a massage spot at the entrance of the bath where the Korean female masseuse had an outstanding skill.

Monday morning, we visited Shorinji in Sakurai. Because the bus was scarce, we took a taxi for 1180 Yen. It would not be a bad idea especially you travel in a group. Getting off the taxi, we walked uphill a little and saw a rather compact but tasteful temple’s gate. The surrounding is an old and lovely country village, and you can view this whole landscape from the small wooden veranda of the temple. The god that sit in this temple was Jizo-Bosatsu, a blend of people's local religion and Buddhism, and it reveals in the style, which we found interesting.
Our main subject, the Eleven-faced Goddess was kept in a separate Kannon Pavilion upstares, and indeed her form of beauty was truly heart-touching. I cannot explain why I am trapped by the engravings of Tenpyo Era so much, but this particular statue of Kannon is a rarity of beauty as Ernest Fenollosa discovered.

A few days ago, I was listening to Sophie Milman’s CD and just happened to browse into Blue Note’s site and her name came in my sight on the display. I was confused momentarily, and thought that it must be a note of her last visit to Japan, but reading more carefully, I realized that she was to come to Japan the following week and the live sessions starting on the 9th. Sophie was in my mind a singer whom I would go to find her mature singing maybe in 5 years time, but now with this strange fate even if it is a mere coincidence, I thought almost automatically I should see this live. That’s why I was out today.

Arriving a few minutes before the time to open the hall, I got the queue number of over 20, and still managed to sit at a table in the first raw. In Sophie’s CD albums, her photos are superbly photogenic being very urban and sophisticated, but the direct impression herself was slightly different. She appeared as a buxom and amicable character of about 30 years in a glance. She is definitely a charming, young lady, so it would be nice if many young people become jazz fans following her. I think one of remarkable properties of hers is that the foundation being in jazz yet she performs music borderlessly, digesting rock, chansons or whatever. Sting should definitely fit in her style.

The artists who stood out in the stage were sax and drums. Specifically, Jim Doxas showed a sensitivity of percussionist beyond a drummer, and it was impressive. Diego Rivera was surely talented, but in almost all songs, he appealed his solo, and sometimes more so than the singer. If Sophie could counterpoint to it with her voice, it must have been a great fun but she tended more reserved. She often had a gesture like a conductor manipulating a baton that gave an impression that she was still in the process of learning the piece of music. If she learns how to behave like a star creating unpredictable atmosphere, the stage will be even more exciting. The back quartet played “A-train” for a short break for Sophie, and after that the show was wonderful. It is good to know that she loves coming to Japan and especially enjoys buying wonderful shoes.
It was a 90-minute show, and as always, I felt that Blue Note was a live spot with luxury.

Eagle Creek Switchback –

この種の製品はパタゴニアのWhillie(商品企画に力が入っていると思えない)とか、ノースフェースのDoubletrack(重い、高い)などもあるのだが、選択肢は限られるようだ。

The plan for my trip to France has now been fixed to walk in Basque and Pyrénées for a week before getting in Paris, and it made me consider the suitcase: The idea was a backpack with wheels. Such products include Whillie by Patagonia (that did not look like a serious concept for them) or Doubletrack by the North Face (heavy and expensive), and in short the practical choices are rather limited. I picked two potential candidates and went to Shinjuku to examine them.
The first was Karrimor Airport Pro 70. The actual product was a bit crude and the adjustable handle did not look sturdy enough. It may not worth 27000 yen or so at least out of my wallet. So I went to A&F in Higashi Shinjuku next to see Eagle Creek Switchback. The price was actually in the similar range, but this product was quite well designed and it showed an apparent difference. The larger model 26 looked bulky for me and thus I examined the model 22 that fitted well on my back. The weight exceeded 4 kg as a negative factor. The salesperson recommended the model 26 if I was not intending to walk too long with it on my back because this slight difference in size would benefit significantly. It is true the size of model 22 is more or less as small as Titan X2 I have now. Despite this factor, I was inclined to bet on this model because the size allowed carry-on in the international flights.
Upon delivery, I started packing things for a simulation, and it was so quick indeed to be filled out. I then restarted carefully selecting the cloths to pack. (A tough challenge for women with garments!) The Switchback is integrated with a detachable daypack, and it will be my intelligent packer for my Mac, power supply, SLR camera and etc., and it results in a rather heavy satellite for its size. When loaded on my shoulders altogether, the weight was comfortably dispersed as the entire backpack is fastened at the chest and the waist. Noted the heavy satellite daypack pulled the balance to further back from the body, which may require a wiser consideration in the way of packing for stability. I am already confident that this Switchback Modular 22 is going to be a truly versatile travel gear for me.

How Are Cherries This Year?

I cannot tell why but this year the cherry trees do not look so beautiful as they used to. The blossoms at their peak were greeted by the cold weather under colorless cloud, and now they are already falling. It appears as if they are mumbling “we are all done this year, let’s quit!”
Today, I went to see Sakura of Honma Mansion about which I wrote two years ago, and I found they had built a local support center in this place. Some branches were also gone.
