Lourdes -

With a view of snowy mountains far beyond and the appearance of houses from the bus, Lourdes looked like an attractive ville, but when I really stayed there, I felt some indescribable sense of chaos. This is the place where the energy toward religion generated some sort of prosperity. The perspectives in any religious headquarters might be more or less similar like this, but numerous people move in groups and dealing with them are souvenir shops, restaurants and hotels. The information office here was incomparably modern in the environment.
I went to see the evening prayer at 21:30 which was an international event, and the hymns were sort of touching as always. The Glotte was behind the church further on the right side, and I surely got a bottle of sacred fountain water of Loudes, but it flew out from the faucet rather powerfully, more so than that in my house, and it wasn't like from a fountain.

A Splendid Day in Gavarnie -

Cirque de Gavarnie: 6/03

The B&B host helped me in identifying places to visit and with some backup options such as Cauterets and Pic du Midi, I went to the information office in town. The young man who dealt with me said in the beginning that the bus for Gavarnie was at 7:30 in the morning and I thought I should hire a taxi in that case, but he spoke to his senior lady and came back saying actually the one he mentioned was outdated and according to the current time-table it was 9:50. Splendid and perfect as the returning bus was at 16:15!
This existence of transportation was a great bonus to me as I came here almost determinedly to hire a taxi.
In this morning, the bus came in front of the information center 10 minutes late. Except for an old lady sitting in the first raw seat, I was the only passenger, and the fare was only 2 Euros surprisingly for the 45 minutes' ride of winding mountain road. At Gavarnie also, the bus stopped in front of the information, and a magnificent view already greeted me there. It was said promener (hiking) to snows on the skirt of mountains was about 90 minutes which begins with a comfortably maintained flat road along the brook of snow-melted water and the fresh greens on the slopes both sides are pleasing. After about 40 minutes of walk, the road starts climbing but it wouldn't be too tough and it ends in about 30 minutes. People who visit here all dressed very light and the average age seemed rather high. They sit on stones and spread their lunch. I had a baguette sandwitch that I had made with roast beef, cheese and carrot as I had had for my previous night's meal. Frankly, a few strawberries I brought with were the best, and I thought the watery sweet fruits are the greatest thing to have after an exercise (if not a beer).

Luz Saint Sauveur -

As TGV arrives at Lourdes from Bordeaux, I transferred to a bus for Luz St Sauveur which is about 40 minutes of journey into mountains. I had picked a B&B called Christine et Petxu, a private house located in 10+ minutes of walk uphill from the bus stop. Eaglecreek Switchback instead of ordinary suitcase was the right choice. Their reservation required an international bank transfer of the first night's due which is rather expensive and complicated, therefore people in Japan would normally avoid staying, but in my case I had means to make a transfer without a charge and also their price was indeed attractive. It seemed run by a Spanish family, and I had breakfast with their daughter, a middle-school girl perhaps. In Carrefoul in town, I bought a fees stuff to bite in the hike, and actually decided to eat the same for the dinner in my room. I could borrow a glass, a tray, a knife and a fork, they even said that I could use the dining room. This sort of thing is the better part than a hotel.
Luz was truly comfortable. It is a base camp for Pyrenees mountains and the view is authentic. It's tranquillity is what I liked. Their summer season may be busy but the town itself is quite petit and it does not smell commercialized.

Pauillac -

In the first morning, I went to the office of tourism in Bordeaux for the direction for Chateau Pontet-Canet because I sent a request mail of a visit at Narita airport as I was about to leave and their reply was waiting for me when I got to the room in bordeaux.
I was instructed to take tram C upto Les Aubiers and transfer to #705 Gironde bus there. It was quite easy but there were only two services in the morning at 7:33 and 10:49. It was an amazing route passing through Chateau Margux, Beycheville, Comtesse Lalande and others to get to Pauillac. At la maison de tourisme de Pauillac, I obtained a map and started walking. The lady at the information said roughly 20 minutes, but it was not that close. Passing through the town without an appeal, going over the railway, I took the road toward left, and soon it became totally unpaved ending up in the middle of vineyards. Proceeding further, I recognized the chateau building on my right, which means that I came in the backside. It took more than 40 minutes from the town to the entrance where a couple from Toronto and their friends from La Rochelle were waiting for the last visitor's arrival for 2 o'clock tour, and I just made it.
The guide said that they are making more emphasis on bio and even started using horses because bringing heavy vehicles in the vineyards potentially causes damages to the field.

After Pontet-Canet, I walked further to Mouton-Rothchild which was conveniently close for a nice promenade. Unfortunately, they had rather Important process going on and not accepting visits for the period.
Considering the return bus at 16:30 from Le Pouyalet, this was pretty much all that I could handle in a day without a car.

Bordeaux -

I am in Bordeaux now. It rains from Day 1. I did not mean to be here in the beginning, but I wanted avoid staying in Paris first, so I checked several connecting flights and ended up with Bordeaux among good options.
The lodging is a B&B called Une Chambre en Ville, a spacious accommodation with bedroom, living room, and kitchen, but facing to the street on the second floor, some passers-by shout in 3 a.m. A pair of ear plugs are the must to stay comfortably. I hoped to post some pictures, but iPad's Safari somehow does not handle Blogger's function, so I can only upload them upon my return home later.

Cloud Readers (PDF
Google Mobile App (音声認識検索)
BBC News
Wikipanion
Dictionary.com

☺☺☺

iPad arrived yesterday around 3 p.m. I started setting up applications and data in the evening and it was as late as 3 a.m. when I finally went to bed. I picked up the following apps:

Pages (for writing and reading documents)
Cloud Readers (PDFreading)
iBooks
Filterstorm (photo editing)
Google Mobile App (search through voice recognition)
BBC News
Wikipanion
Dictionary.com
WordReference English-French Dictionary

This is the installation work, and it was very different from what we understand with PCs. Apps do not offer so-called menu tab while the User Guide only explains the fundamental operation of pre-installed apps. I was momentarily stuck when I wanted to try importing some PDF files. I was lucky because the latest Cloud Readers version added this exact function, and the basic rule was everything came through the companion Mac as the base station.
One great function missing that I realized in manipulating the iPad in hand was printing. Logically, this tool is for electronic book reading essentially where the conversion of media to paper via printing was probably not welcome, and it might be Apple’s strong statement to get rid of paper from any media from now on.
Inconvenience due to single-task system environment was reality. For example, you receive a mail with a few threads of internet links, and by clicking one of them, the screen jumps to the site as expected, but the mailer at that time closes in background. You cannot return from browser to mailer for the second thread, but you must restart the mailer after closing the browser.
A built-in mic was integrated even in Wi-Fi iPad, so I could start Skype with iPad alone. Here, if you want to refer to some document or information while discussing over the phone, but you must shut down Skype to open another application.
It was a big news recently that Flash was not supported in iPad, and this will inevitably cause problems in various places, and in my case in reading Nikkei electronic newspaper, the section of real paper layout was structured in Flash thus unreadable.
And lastly, its weight of about 700g was rather touch to keep holding in one hand for reading.
Today, I listed only the bottlenecks I recognized with iPad in front of me, and I hope to report how it serves my purposes in the trip.

Bizarreness in Courier Services –

Every time I receive delivery from Amazon (Japan), I cannot but gasp with the idea that they are core American. Whatever small the item I ordered was, it comes in a decent carton box regardless of the item’s size. It’s just amazing that they are happy to transport that much air and pulp. How could it be possible for a profit-based company? Well, I found one of the reasons recently. I was in a situation to return an item, and in my case I had to bear the cost of course, but in this process it came to my knowledge that the cost Amazon would bear was mere 400 Yen (when item is returned by cause and covered by recipient) while my tariff is 3 times more expensive.

Another topic. I have done with the pair of rather large and heavy speakers that served us for a few decades. They had to be sent out to Kyushu. Yamato Transport had a service so-called “Easy Household Goods Mover” and I thought it was exactly the one I needed, so I rang them up, but the receptionist simply repeated that it was the service only for currently available products (=replaceable in case of loss). I tend to think their official name of the service was wrong and a rip-off. In whose home do household goods consist of current products only fundamentally? I also felt as if I was not speaking to a human but a manual book of receptionist, but I still tried to hang on: “Well then, how could I send these things?” She said their service for pianos and other instruments perhaps, and instead of transferring me to the right section, she gave me a number to call, where I ended up finding their cost was approximately 70,000 Yen for a piano or a speaker therefore appalling enough 140,000 Yen for a pair! I was even suggested to contact their “Easy Household Goods Moving”!!

I came across with this special album in iTunes Store that compiles 20 songs in her repertoire and she talks an episode related to each one. Tokiko was not exactly an excellent singer as a university student, but her career kept growing most smoothly after her debut, and it was for me quite difficult to understand at that time.
She kept her track on rather minor genres such as chansons and gradually established her own style of singing as if talking that enabled her to share the sentiment with people living the mediocre life. I think she greatly depended on the presence of her late husband, Mr. Toshio Fujimoto for it. Entire listening of the album requires more than 2 hours, but it is like a journey looking back the history of “Otoki-san”. A quite pleasing project collecting her much-loved songs rich with pathos!

En attendant iPad -

BeoCom 1401 that has been long in the storage is now back in my living room. The reason is because the current phone BeoCom 6000 had intermittent errors recently, and I guess it is caused by the battery about to die. This battery is difficult to obtain practically. The truly good thing with the plain analog phone is that it works under whatever conditions without the need for the power. The preceding BeoCom 1400 was introduced in 1992, designed by Martin Iseli, and replaced by BeoCom 1401 in 1996. The body colors vary depending on the period sold. Even today its form is distinguished as if the essence of modern design.

Sakura and Greens in Mountains -

The season of cherry blossoms is about to end in mountains now. Here in Kusatsu Onsen, the altitude is over 1000 meters with nice, cool air, and we usually come here in early May to watch “yamazakura” or wild cherry trees that have a charming pinky color. This year we were a bit late, I think. Instead, the young, green leaves in the mountains for example in Agatsuma Valley are so refreshing to watch now.

Today starts the iPad preorder for its end-of-month shipping. Apple that kept silent until last night distributed a notice mail around 4:30 in the morning. I woke up at 5:30 and visited Apple Store site where a process for reservations was ready. Checking the delivery timing, it said “by 28th”, and I booked a 64G model and a Camera Connection Kit without hesitation. As for the disk size, I had experienced in the past an exceptional slowness when the machine’s remaining disk capacity got below 10G, and also, I have in my MacBook Air the data of 20G iTunes and 8G iPhoto now, therefore the richer the capacity gets, the more comfortable the function is expected. Anyway, I think I can start my trip in the end of May carrying an iPad.

The Ninth Photo of Rimbaud –

In Yesterday’s Le Monde, I saw an article about the newly discovered photograph of Arthur Rimbaud. As I am in a short trip now, I hope to write about this at a later time.

Stumbling Europe -

Euro is almost going below 118 Yen. It is a diving fall of over 7 Yen (or 6%) in 3 days, and it appears as if investors are panicking to bail out. This may be the indication of the impact of problem in Greece and other nations chained to it. I tend to suspect it is hopeless for traders to expect a bright dream of money games in Europe in this moment, and I would rather nod if an expert tells me the realistic rate considering the economical power particularly including slow areas would be in the range of 115 Yen.
It would benefit me some as I will start traveling in to the flames from the end of month, but I have some cash in my pocket already which keeps shrinking practically, and the worst scenario is another economical catastrophe in the global level. I now worry more than the time of Lehman’s case.

Opera Comique 2011 -

The next season’s catalogue has arrived from Opéra Comique. Sir Gardiner and Monteverdi Choir continue to participate, and they will perform Weber’s “Der Freischütz” next year in April. This time, it is half-tempting for me and I will decide what I would do after this year’s trip, but it would be nice if a video of this popular opera released.
Other titles lined up are Luly’s “Cadmus et Hermione” in this coming November, Poulenc’s “Les Mamelles des Tirésias” in January, Prokofiev’s “Betrothal in a Monastery” in February, Massenet’s “Cinderella” in March, and Luly’s “Atys” in May.
The information is available in their site but in French language only.

La Folle Journée 2010 –

It was the opening day of La Folle Journée au Japon today, and I went to Tokyo International Forum. The concerts I chose were Bach’s harpsichord pieces from 9:30 first in the morning, and handel’s arias from 4:30 in the afternoon. In particular, the latter concert by Maria Keohane (soprano) and Ricercar Consort was superb. Not only the gifted, truly beautiful voice that I completely got in love with last year, but Ms. Keohane’s singing ability was outstanding, and I thought the best of the day was “Da tempeste”, aria from “Julio Cesare”. It was followed by “Pensieri, voi mi tormentate” from “Agrippina” that revealed quite avant-garde aspect of Handel with unexpected progress of melody and harmony, and it was equally impressive. After these, she sang “Rejoice greatly” of “Messiah” rather like talking lightly than singing that I wished more emotional singing passages of her. The last was the famous “Lascia ch’io pianga” from “Rinaldo” that again had a light taste, and looking back after the heavy two pieces, these popular arias were almost like encores of the concert. Still, this event was exceptionally satisfying to me and I sincerely hope to see her more frequently. The Hall C was completely full.
One thing interesting I noticed was the harpsichord used in this concert was identical to that used in the morning session, probably a Flemish slightly small in size and the tones were not so colorful, and there was no hint of who made it just by looking from outside.
