Helsinki Formula Scrubber -

Sweating a lot in the head wearing a Panama hat in the summer, I looked for a scrubber for more refreshing shampooing, and have bought a product called Helsinki Formula that seemed well reputed. It was not cheap here while it's only $10 in USA. In fact, with a decent massaging effect to the head, it is far more comfortable than expected. It is going to be a must-have for my bath time.

Tokyo Summer –

The heat in Tokyo is incessant. It hit 38.1 degrees Celsius in Nerima, Tokyo yesterday, and I was there unfortunately because my daughter’s family occupy my Zushi home to let the kids play in the pool and the beach with some of their friends this week, and in exchange I stay in our old house in Nerima.
It is said that the massive summer heat accumulated in the central Tokyo tends to be pushed up north by the wind from the sea: That is why Nerima and neighboring Saitama get heated. At 37 or 38 degrees, it is hard to breathe without an air-conditioner under the environment without much green, and thus everybody runs the air-conditioners to make the situation even worse. If you fail to pay the electricity fee, you won’t survive.
Because of this, my wine cellar box exceeded 20C and it didn’t get cooler, so I threw in some frozen coolants. A very tough summer for my wines, too.

My Cataract Operation, Act 1

I will have an operation of cataract in October.
It was in the autumn of 2007 when I visited an optical clinic in the neighborhood as I felt the problem of visibility with my left eye, at which time I merely wanted to get a prescription to change my glasses. They examined my eyes carefully even with the eyeground checks, and they saw no particular problems, therefore the prescription at best was like demanding me to live with this difficulty to a certain extent because increasing the degree of compensation would not automatically improve the visibility and because the difference of compensation between the eyes was already on the recommendable limit.
I reviewed how I see the vision, and in addition to the blur, I had tripple images deviated and overlapped which made me really tough to identify the letters in the ads and the faces of the people in distance. It is where the significant difference is from the right eye. I had this discomfort in everyday’s life for last 3 years, and I thought I had to settle it somehow this year: I checked various hospitals in the net including their reputations, and decided to visit a university hospital in Kanagawa prefecture.
The young doctor in charge of visitor-patients examined my eyes to find no major problems and the status of my cataract was said to be in the range of #2 among 5 steps, not too bad for both eyes. The result only confirmed the previous result at the clinic, and it still fails to identify the mechanism of my problem.
At the second visit, the doctor consulted with their cataract expert, and this middle-aged doctor was very quick to decide. He said my left eye was noticeably worse and it seemed it continued to deteriorate judging from my 2-year old glasses. He positively told me that the life would be easier with the operation of both eyes. He also said that my eyeground was quite clean for the age. This is how the things moved on so far.

Gardiner Bach Cantatas –

Volume 11 of Gardiner’s Bach Cantatas Series was delivered from UK about a month ago, and I listen to this latest release often recently. Included in this album are cantatas quite unfamiliar to me (BWV162/49/180/109/38/98/188), but all the works are brightly exhilarating, and it is so delightful to listen. Among them, Nos. 49 and 188 start with Sinfonia to bring you closer to the music, and particularly in the case of BWV 188, it is an appropriation, as Bach often makes, from D-minor Clavier Concerto BWV 1052.
The Bach Cantatas Series is the record of Monteverdi Choir project called Bach Pilgrimage executed in 1999 through 2000 in which they revisited the churches in various places on the exact date each specific cantata was originally performed (or supposed to be performed), and they keep releasing the record of this almost ridiculously complicated project up until today. It now only leaves Volumes 12 and 18 to be filled, and the delivery of total 27 volumes will complete by the end of the year.

Mirror at the Door -

One of the wishes my wife had been telling me was a full-length mirror by the entrance, and I found a bargain mirror pair of waveform at IKEA for only 990 Yen. I decided to put them behind the door of storage shelves. The walnut plates to hold the mirrors on the top and the buttom were actually more expensive, but in overall I thought it was a nice fit. Eventually, it did not seem appealed much to her as long as it is hidden behind the door.

Pleyel and Chopin –

I went to the concert of Classical Players Tokyo at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Theater. My seat was in the 5th row on the second floor. The size of this hall was apparently excessive for the ensemble of period instruments led by Hiroaki Arita, and some rows in the far end of second and third floors were supposed to be kept vacant for controlling the acoustic balance, but the second floor actually looked full. They probably decided to sell more seats because of higher demand than expected.

The first part of the program consisted of Summer from Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”, the overture of “Figaro” and the first movement of Mozart’s G-minor symphony, but it sounded to me the orchestra was not functioning properly as if an amateur band. I considered the possible reasons why.

1. The period instruments are not good enough.
2. The players are not well trained to play the period instruments.
3. The fundamental limitation of skills
As for the size of the hall, I could hear the soft passages enough, and I didn’t think it caused them some difficulty in particular. Something that annoyed me the most was the ensemble’s phrasing in which they tended to be loose in playing the melodies steady and accurate but slippery in fast passages. It could be a possible cause of the above item 2 or 3. Overlooking the players, they were generally young. Among them, Ms Ririko Maeda, the flutist looked dignified in presence, but even she is still young. One of second violinists appeared to be a junior indeed. I noted in the tuning before playing there were some subtle chaotic adjustments here and there in the pitch, and I suspected that their level might have not reached the state to fully enjoy the harmony and even including the stress of discords in music.

Nonetheless, this concert was exceptionally satisfactory because the main feature, Ikuyo Nakamichi to play Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 over a Pleyel built in 1841 that Arita owned, was so successful. I think the encounter with this authentic instrument of Chopin’s epoch was truly the eye-opener for Ms. Nakamichi in understanding how the composer constructed the music. It is why Pleyel is so exciting.
As for the style of playing concerto, it was explained that they followed the tradition of those days to accompany the piano with solo instruments where the piano and the orchestra play together, but I thought that such a direct practice might be a risky (and often dogmatic) approach to take in a completely different premise like this from 19th century’s salle for some 300 audience, while I appreciate the intent to realize the interesting contrast in music. The strings were in fact a bit too weak in balance. They had finished the recording of this concerto earlier on the day, and I look forward to the release of CD in December with a greater hope.

Hiroshima in 65 Years - 65年目のヒロシマ

With Ambassador Roos participating the Peace Anniversary today, USA finally came to Hiroshima on August 6 for the first time in 65 years. Also present in the ceremony were Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of UN, and representative ambassadors from UK and France. For the citizens of Hiroshima, including myself having mother and sister as hibakusha, it is definitely another memorable and significant step forward after Barack’s speech in Prague, because such A-bomb holding majors as US, UK and France had not accepted Mayor's invitation to August 6 ceremony in the past. Still the fundamental gap might be large between hibakusha’s mentality and US people’s perception, as I thought that the webpage of US Embassy in Japan was an ironical example earlier in the morning: the top article in their Japanese page was John Roos visiting Hiroshima for the ceremony, but there was not a single mention of it in the corresponding English page. Now at a later time, they have posted it (to my relief).

Peak of the Summer -

Five in the morning, and the sunbeam already appears to predict the hottest day in this summer. A light lunch of soba noodels would be nice in such a day, popped up in my mind, so I went to Bonzo, the next door to Zaimokuza Post Office. On the way is Kuhonji Temple with small but neat precincts. There were modest flowers blooming along the house walls in the premise.

When the esophageal cancer was found in January, Ozawa cancelled all his activities in the year for the operation, and after 7 months, he now has come back. For last 25 years, he has never failed to appear at his summer concerts in Yamanouchi Middle School and Saito Kinen Festival in Matsumoto.
He was rather slim having lost 15 kg of weight, and still requires more rigid physical recovery to perform ideally. He withholds overseas activities for a while, but will supervise a Japan Event in New York in the fall.

Zushi Beach -

Mid-summer Sunday. Young people flow to Zushi beach in this season. Also, noticeably many Americans come here, too. I don’t know why though.
After 2 o’clock, I walked about 20 minutes to the beach, as I had to go out for shopping. I did not prepare for swimming, and it was unfortunate because this hot weather could cause hyperthermia just by walking in the beach, so I decided not to stay longer and walked instead to the Starbucks in front of the station to rest.
I ordered a coffee-jelly frappuccino immediately and managed to get a seat. Starbucks near Zushi station shares the space with La Marée de Chaya therefore you can have a coffee and a better choice of cake if desired. I picked up my iPod to listen to something while I had the frappuccino, and played Bach’s violin concerto. Akiko Suwanai was among the collection but I chose Anne-Sophie Mutter this time. When the music ended, I stood up to go out into the heat, and I felt I was half-hyperthermic despite the cool rest.

Après le Désir -

The training of Messiah singing came to the ending Amen chorus in this month. Those members who already have sung Handel before tend to be more open and energetic when it comes to Hallelujah or Amen, but I for the very first attempt am completely occupied to digest each song in the stomach myself. I have listened to Messiah number of times, a hearing expert so to speak, but as I sing it, Handel keeps me impressed with his extraordinary skills of craftsmanship.
As for the score, while Novello Edition is recommended which is most popular and even available in a paperback, I came across with Oxford Edition and I found it most convenient reading the words because it is a wider letter-size print. I further scan the chorus pages and retype the words with thicker characters for some of the songs for the ease in practice.
For the remaining 3 months, we go back to the beginning for the final brush-up, but I joined the chorus this year when the Part 1 training had been over, and thus I have to continue practicing myself at home for preparation.

Kamakura Fireworks -

I saw the fireworks in Kamakura today. It was a smaller fireworks event, and the atmosphere was relaxed without too much packed crowd boiling up everywhere because the beach from Yuigahama to Zaimokuza is quite broad accepting the spectators spaciously. The show basically consisted of the splash of flowers on the water and high launches of big, round fireworks. I thought it was somewhat monotonous.

This quarterly magazine features a long interview with Haruki Murakami in its summer 2010 issue. The author has always avoided the talks on the subject of his works, and therefore it is worth a watch and this rather unusually fluent conversation is also interesting because the author himself discusses how he evolved writing novels. I nodded at several passages as I read it.

● About writing a “story”. If one defines him as storyteller, I am the evidence because I who seldom read novels continue enjoying his works.
● “Enough of a story in realism.” - after writing Norwegian Wood.
● 1Q84 is structures after Well-tempered Klavier by Bach with 14 sections each in Books 1 and 2. It means Book 3 was not in the picture originally.
● "The colloquial portion is truly vital. In the narrative part, I tend to use metaphors in place for descriptive sentences, to structure paraphrases in layers, and leave many that should be described to something else."

And more discussion continues.

Summer's Sun -

Summer is come on the beach of Zaimokuza at last, appeal the clouds in the sky. The sunbeam today was truly dazzling. On the other hand, the extreme rains continue in the western part of Japan.

Suffering Country's Election

I have no idea how the people in this country hope to move the government. The result of the last weekend’s Upper House election was something like the situation in which investors had made the change last year in a company with wrong management and years of cumulative deficits to force the entire renewal, but they now suggest their resignation before seeing the result of this entire fiscal because the business improvement afterward was limited and the management’s strategy-setting looked somewhat unprofessional. If the investors enforce their responsibility by caprice, how could the management practice the long-term projects?
I hope the media give us a thorough analysis of people's thoughts and intents instead of superficially throwing the catchy words like “Democratic Party’s Complete Loss” and stimulating political instability. Let’s look at the number of votes gained by major parties for example, and surely as expected, Your Party has attracted people's attention:

Fujifilm Square runs an exhibition of Ansel Adams, and I went to see it. A small event showing only 16 or 17 photos taken in Yosemite and else in 1963, but we can be in the monochrome world of Ansel's for a while, and I found some photos interesting such as Sonoma Valley and maple leaves.

Hanging PET Vase –

Thinking of what to decorate on the room wall by using the picture rail, the immediate thought was to hang a vase. I may have received stimulation from a recent TV program reporting Chelsea Flower Show. But I have no proper vases in hand nor have I come across with variety of options in the Internet search except a bit pricy Jurgen Lehl. In the meantime, until I find something that fits, I hang a PET bottle. If I line up five of those, they might look gorgeous, I guess.
By the way, I decided not to hang here the print of Marco Del Re but in the corridor.

Nike Siege 2

I bought a new sunglass. It is Nike Siege 2, an athletes' model that is getting popular recently enabling to integrate sight-adjustment lenses behind the filters. I like the design as well as the fitting comfort, but what really surprised me was its great visibility. The blue of the sky and the green of the trees were breathtaking, and it was a powerful tool to make your hiking more pleasant with a new sensation. That was how I enjoyed my recent walk in Gavarnie.
There are 5 different options for tint filters (check the following link for simulations: http://www.nikevision.com/lens-simulator), and mine came with “Speed”. Also attached was normal Grey filter the colors through which were truly natural. Speed had a slightly brownish view.

Beocom 6000 Battery -

The battery for Beocom 6000 phone was handled by 3 shops when I searched in Amazon France, and the specs were NiMH 700mAh/3.6V. I managed to obtain one for 15 or 16 Euros plus 7 more for the local delivery while I was staying long enough in France. I replaced the batteries upon my return home, and the phone is now functioning flawlessly.
