旅先でiPadの使い勝手を既に2週間以上実体験しているのだが、正直なかなか厳しいものがある。生命線の情報アクセスは例のFlash非対応問題で、表示されないサイトが色々とあるので、これが時刻表などだとお手上げだ。それと地図をスクリーンショットで保存しておくというような簡単なこともできないので、やはり不便さを感じることが少なからず発生する。以下はその他感じたままのメモである。
キーボードを操作していると、他の指が画面に接触してしまうことがよくある。
ソフトウェア・キーボードは触れただけでキー・インされるので、これが入力の妨げになる。対策としては外付けキーボードを使うか、少し高い位置からストロークの長い打ち方を習得するしかない。将来的には、感圧型のディスプレイ開発に進むだろう。
キーボードにつては、僕は極めてマイナーなカナ入力派で、英語のアルファベットを前提とするQWERTキーを全く異なる言語に使って当たり前と思う感覚が信じられない。特に外来語を例えば「minor」ではなく「mainaー」のように入力を強いられるところで思考が一度止まるのだ。この選択肢が提供されないままだと、iPadを使い続けることはしないと思う。
日本語変換エンジンはインテリジェントな仕組みを持ってはいるが賢くない。未確定のまま文節が長くなると選択肢が減ってしまう。例えば前節の「思考」も、最初に選ぶ際は文節としては候補にない。単語として区切っていれば選択できる。但し一度選んで使えば文節でも候補になるようだ。辞書は割りと普通の単語を意外にも持っていないことがあり、そんな時にも単語登録機能がないので自分用に育てられない。これはATOKのような外部FEPへの環境開放が求められるところ。
気がつかなかった制約のなかで、メールが最新200件までの最大表示しかできなくて、これは2週間も出掛けていると過去のメールにアクセスできない状態に陥って、実用性が俄然損なわれた。ジャンクメールのフィルターもないのが困る。
ネット接続については、フランスではWi-Fiの普及も意外と進んでいるようで、パリ、バイヨンヌ、サンセバスチャンなどでは全く問題なかった。
但しルルドでは、いわゆる巡礼者向けの安宿だが、「パソコンを使いたい」と言ったら大きな電源アダプターみたいなものを貸してくれた。見るとLAN端子があって、PLC機器なのだ。ここでロジテックの無線ルーターのお出ましとなったがWANとの接続が確立されず諦めた。インフォメーションに行ってWi-Fi出来る所を聞いたら、すぐ近くのマクドナルドを教えられた。行ってみると中はゆったりとしていてきれいな店で、ビールとフライを買ってここでメールを受信した。日本と違って無料アクセスポイントというのは気がきいている。
I have been using iPad on the road for over 2 weeks now, and it is rather tough. The information access is the life line of traveling, but because of the famous Flash problem, I often came across with sites that were not properly displayed, and the situation becomes fatal with time-table search. Also such a simple matter as taking screen shots of maps does not work with iPad inconveniently. Below describes what I felt during the trip.
Quite frequently, my fingers touch the screen unwillingly while working on the keyboard. On this software keyboard, a slight touch is an entry, and it greatly annoys your input effort. An external keyboard would be the solution, or you train yourself to hold your fingers up high from the screen and play with longer finger travels. When will be the day when the display is not touch-sensing but pressure-sensing?
When it comes the the Japanese entry method, I am a genuine minority using "kana" keys. I cannot imagine how other people could happily live with the foreign QWERT keys designed for an alphabetical language to enter a completely different structure of language. Particularly when manipulating foreign words, "minor" for example, I have to enter it "maina-", and it is where my brain is forced to cease thinking. I would not be using iPad if the options of entries are not supported.
The Japanese conversion engine is not wise, either, and I only hope such alternative options as ATOK become available.
I was ignorantly unaware of the fact that the mail application only displayed maximum 200 messages, and the capacity was far from satisfying when you have more than 2-weeks of travel as you completely lose the access to older mails. I do not see any filtering function of SPAMs.
Regarding networking, it appeared that Wi-Fi was relatively popular in France, and I did not see problems in big cities like Paris, Bayonne, Bordeaux and San Sebastian.
In Lourdes though, I stayed in a cheap hotel mainly for pilgrimage where they let me use a power supply with an Ether terminal, apparently a PLC unit, so I picked up my Logitec box to hook up, but it failed establishing the connection. the bureau of tourism suggested me a MacDonals nearby which was spacious and clean and Wi-Fi worked flawlessly and freely while I had chips and beer.
